Description

A romantic cottage for 2 people, in beautiful countryside with lovely views across the Solway Firth to Scotland. Great walking and cycling country and close to stunning beaches. Character cottage newly renovated in 2016 with private garden. A welcome pack of home made and local produce is included. Well behaved dogs welcome! Close to village pubs (approx 1 mile away) . Fishing nearby and Arkleby leisure pool with sauna and hot tub 1 minute away. Approx 6 miles from Cockermouth. Home deliveries are possible from the Sainsburys in Cockermouth or Iceland, Asda or Tesco branches in Workington. This cottage will appeal to those wanting a peaceful holiday in the country. A car is essential, but within easy driving distance, is the wonderful scenery of the north lakes (our nearest lake is Bassenthwaite) and within approx 20 minutes drive you have Ullswater, Crummock Water and Buttermere. The towns of Cockermouth and Keswick and the City of Carlisle are all within easy driving distance. We are about 10 minutes drive to the beautiful but deserted Solway coast. The cottage has a lounge/diner (15'6" X 11'6") ,with Log Burner and the addition of a "Smart" LG TV,for Netflix and the like, Free Wifi is available. A well equipped kitchen (7'6" X 8' ) and fully tiled shower room with enclosed newly fitted double shower, WC and hand basin (9' X 3'9") all on the ground floor. A generous sized bedroom (15'6" X 12'6") with beamed ceiling and exposed stone wall upstairs. As this is a traditional rural cottage we have furnished it in a traditional way. The stairs are VERY steep, as space is limited in this 1748 built cottage, so is NOT suitable for people with mobility difficulties . There is a lawned private garden to the front with lovely views and a secluded dog proof rear area, also with good views!

We are happy to consider breaks from 2 nights upwards and are very flexible regarding changeover days. The cottage adjoins our house and you can be assured of a warm welcome on arrival and total privacy and seclusion during your stay.

Location description from owner

The England region

The Lake District is renowned for its dramatic scenery and opportunities for walking and other country pursuits. We are on the fringe of the Lake District National Park and an easy drive to some of the most scenic areas in the country. A day out in the Lake District is never dull with its abundance of bird and wildlife, quaint country pubs and tea rooms and interesting towns and villages. Whether you are coming for a short break or a longer holiday there are plenty of things to do and see. Not too far afield from us is the City of Carlisle, with Hadrians Wall and the renowned countryside of the Scottish Borders and Dumfries and Galloway within travelling distance.

Cockermouth

Our nearest main town is Cockermouth about six miles away. Here in this very attractive town (the birthplace of William Wordsworth) you will find a wide variety of independent shops, pubs and restaurants together with three supermarkets. Jennings Brewery is in Cockermouth and a trip around the brewery is a must as is a visit to the Wordsworth Museum. Our nearest villages are Gilcrux (where there is a pub(serving food),bistro, church, post office and village hall) and Parsonby (where there is a church.) Both villages are within easy walking distance. Trout fishing is available at Gilcrux Trout Fisheries. At the bottom of our lane (about 1 min in the car) is Arkleby Leisure Pool - a fantastic heated large indoor pool and also a sauna and hot tub. This facility can be booked in advance by the hour so you can have the place to yourselves! Our area is very popular with cyclists and we can offer secure cycle storage. Our nearest shops are in Aspatria which is about 2 1/2 miles away. Here you will find several pubs,a Spar and Co-Op ,a shop that sells everything!,chippie and Chinese and Mediterranean takeaways, filling station, library cash point, doctors and several churches. In Aspatria be sure to pay a visit to the shop at the Lake District Cheese Company creamery for extra mature cheddar to die for at a bargain price. There is a nine hole golf course in Aspatria and there are also golf courses in Cockermouth,Maryport and Silloth. Wardhall is a sleepy little hamlet of about 30 souls all of whom are very friendly. Our lane is very quiet with probably as many tractors as cars. Here at Wardhall you can enjoy the peace of the countryside with the convenience of being close to every facility.

“Peaceful & Relaxing!”

Reviewed 26 Oct 2015

My wife and I arrived about 4.00pm, with little difficulty thsnks to Stephen's written dirrections. Far more helpful than my GPS system, which refused to recognize the Wardhall postcode. Stephen was away the day we arrived and, as arranged, Jillian from across the road met us and handed over the key. Upon entry, we found enough food to make a trip to the nearest supermarket unnecessary until the folloeing afternoon. Eggs, butter, marmalade and milk in the fridge, homemade bread, cake and scones, bottled water, teabags and coffee, and oh, a bottle of white wine, also in the fridge! Despite the average weather, the countyside scenery was beautiful. Took a Lake Windemere cruise but, due to the weather, found it somewhat underwhelming. A Sydney Harbour ferry ride in similar weather is far far superior. We are quick learners however, and with the continuation of inclement weather, we opted for undercover activities. A visit to The Devil's Porridge Museum at Eastrigg, just over the border in Scotland, scored 10/10 for us, as did The Cumberland Pencil Museum at Keswick. Both are quite extraordinary. We swere also fortunate enough to visit the once a year two day Kendal Wool Gathering - scored 8/10. All in all, a most enjoyable 5 days. Peaceful location a bit of the beaten track. Just take your time on narrow country roads. Wi-Fi a bit dodgy, but experiment and you will find good locations for connection in the cottage. Thanks Stephen & Elaine for the lovely accommodation, Peter & Helen Cotton

Owner's reply: Thanks Peter & Helen for such a comprehensive and complimentary review. We are really glad that you enjoyed your time here in Wardhall and the surrounding area. Sorry about the weather! Although we only met briefly it was a pleasure and we wish you well for the rest of your visit to the UK. Kindest Steve & Elaine.

Really enjoyed our stay at the cottage! Beautiful scenic views all around, really cute get away, perfect break from the city. Loved the bread and the cakes really yummy! Would definately visit again, hopefully the weather won't be as chilly! Next time we would love to stay for a few more days to take it all in! Really recommend this cottage as it is a wonderful place to stay with warm welcoming owners!

Owner's reply: Hi Harry & Amy Thank you once again for booking Stable Cottage and for leaving such a great review. It was our pleasure to have you stay here in Wardhall and we are naturally pleased that you enjoyed your stay. You will always be most welcome here and we look forward to seeing you again some time in the future. Kindest Elaine & Steve

“Homely, comfortable and quaint.”

Reviewed 22 Apr 2015

My boyfriend and I stayed in this lovely little cottage with our dog for his birthday weekend and couldn't have had a more wonderful time. When we arrived we were immediately greeted by the caretaker Gill (the owners were on holiday) who showed us into the cottage and advised that we could call upon her should we need anything. Despite being away, Stephen and Elaine had still left us the delicious welcome pack of homemade cakes, bread and biscuits as well as wine, milk, butter, tea coffee etc which were very very much appreciated! They really had thought of everything, right down to a picnic basket and blanket to a scrabble board game left in the cupboard. The bedroom was so cosy and the bed so comfy. I live in a city centre so had the best few nights sleep I've had in a very long time in there. Amazing! All in all we had a great time and would highly recommend this cottage for a couples getaway! We explored the areas lakes, fells and beaches, all within an hours drive (beach only 10 min) yet we always looked forward to getting back and having a brew and snuggling up in the warmth on the sofa! Thank you Steve and Elaine! Ps we are so sorry, we discovered the maps to the beach in my car today that you had kindly drawn for your guests and we forgot to return. I do hope you have more copies!!

Owner's reply: Dear Lizzi & Alastair We very much appreciate the wonderful review you have posted in respect of your stay at Stable Cottage and are so glad that the cottage lived up to your expectations. We are only sorry that we did not get to meet you as we were away. You will be most welcome again any time here in Wardhall and hopefully if you come again we will get to meet you! Best wishes Elaine & Steve

“Perfect romantic escape”

Looking for a hideout to get away from it all for a weekend we found Stable Cottage to be cosy and well equipped with everything and more. The location was secluded and peaceful but still within short driving distance to the paths, beach, Cockermouth and Keswick. Local scenery on route to Keswick is breathtaking and well worth another visit to investigate further. We would definitely come and stay again, most probably for longer next time. The home baked welcome treats and wine were a lovely surprise. Best carrot cake ever! Many thanks from Stuart and Jo.

Owner's reply: Dear Stuart & Jo Thank you so much for your very nice review and we are thrilled that Stable Cottage met your expectations. It was a pleasure to have you to stay in Wardhall and we are so glad that you had such a nice relaxing time. You will both be most welcome here again and we look forward to seeing you again some time in the future. Kindest Elaine & Steve

Lovely cottage with excellent facilities in great location. Owners Steve and Elaine couldn't be more welcoming, after a long journey arrived to a warm cosy cottage with a very thoughtful welcome pack of treats and essentials, a nice touch that you wouldn't get with many other places! Kitchen well equipped, big comfy bed, very clean inside and out.. Couldn't fault it! would highly recommend to all and hope to visit again :)

Owner's reply: Dear Chris & Sophie. Thank you for your very kind review. We are delighted that you enjoyed your stay in our cottage and certainly hope that we can have the pleasure of welcoming you again sometime. Great that your classic car was up to the highways and by ways (and sometimes very steep passes) of the Lake District and that you had a safe journey home to Peterborough. Best regards Elaine & Steve.

Stayed for 3 nights Sept 2014 with my husband and our dog. Stable Cottage is absolutely lovely and in a great location. The hospitality we received from Elaine was amazing with lovely homemade goodies and a bottle of wine upon arrival. The cottage was spotlessly clean with a lovely front and back garden for sitting and relaxing in. Just 10 mins drive is the beach at Allonby where our dog loved to run around on the sand each morning and excellent fish and chips at the Codfather. 20 mins drive south is Keswick, Portinscale and Derwent Water. Derwent water is absolutely beautiful, the hike up Catbells is a must. All in all, we thoroughly enjoyed our stay and will definitely return.

Owner's reply: Dear Rachael Many many thanks for your lovely review. As always we get great satisfaction in knowing our guests have enjoyed their stay and we are so glad that the three of you had such a fab time. Rest assured we would only be too pleased to see you again at Stable Cottage. With all best wishes Elaine & Steve

We enjoyed our short stay. It's a very quiet location (good for us city dwellers) with access to the sea and the Lakes. We ate in Cockermouth and at the Bar n Bistro, both good. The cottage was very well equipped and cosy, we appreciated the welcome items.

Owner's reply: Thanks for your favourable comments and glad that you enjoyed the peacefulness of Stable Cottage as an escape from the stresses of Manchester. Hope to see you both again sometime.

“Home Away from Home”

Reviewed 15 Aug 2013

We were greeted by Elaine and Steve on arrival to the Lake District, who opened the house and gave us a little tour of the beautiful cottage we had booked to stay in for a week in August. Being the first guests everything was absolutely sparkling new, but the traditional elements of a holiday cottage were still very much part of the ambience that has been created. Whilst this cottage is suitable for a couple, there is more than enough room and the layout is great. The living room has a two person sofa and chair, table with two chairs and a TV with freeview. The fire in the lviing room was also fabulous, and with the weather on a slight turn from the summer for two days we were glad to use this. We are keen cyclists and walkers and were out of the house every day, but stayed in every evening- this is testament to the cottage as there are many lovely pubs and a bistro in close distance. We were exhausted most evenings and made use of the garden and kitchen- there is also a great BBQ and coal is provided, which is a lovely touch. A large Sainsbury is in Cockermouth for any top ups, but there is also a Co-op in Aspatria 2 miles down the road if you run out of anything. There was a welcome hamper provided when we arrived which contained fresh bread, sonces, homemade marmalade, cheese, butter and even a bottle of wine- incredibly welcoming after a long jounrey and this really sets this lovely house apart from a hotel or B and B. I would highly recommend this cottage to anyone looking for a totally relaxing and romantic break, it was everything we were looking for in a week away in the UK.

Owner's reply: Really pleased that you had such a good time.Thankyou for your kind comments and we hope to see you again sometime at Stable Cottage
