Description

The bell house was built in the stronghold, right under the 13th Century Roman church of San Bartolomeo, and was used as an outpost by Lombardy soldiers who protected the valley and the river below from enemy intrusion. It was only in 1486 that part of it became a priest’s dwelling, with a small botanical garden behind the monastery, right where the soldiers had once been posted. Another part of the building was used as a manor house, with a stable below. Underneath, the village’s communal oven, built into the Lombardy walls, has been functional for centuries. It has been untouched for 500 years.

After the war, almost all of the inhabitants of the village of Cocciglia abandoned it, leaving the houses empty, and there are still some standing today. The bell house was bought by our family at the beginning of the 1980s, but only partially restored. In 2011, after some of the old walls crumbled again, it was decided to restore all of it as well as the garden. Today, it’s a charming dwelling set among the mountains, of which there is a spectacular panorama from the secluded garden. The house has been restored using only local materials: stone and wood, in keeping with the majority of the original plans.

The cellar’s original stonework walls show the thousand year-old history of the dwelling, which rests against a rock face. On the ground floor, an entrance leads to the ample garden and the smallest bedroom, which is east-facing. A large room with fireplace, wooden beams, and a comfortable and welcoming bath have been created where the stables once were. A wooden staircase leads up to the first floor which opens out on the right to a large room with four beds with a warm and cosy wood finish, a window facing the valley, and a ceramic stove. To the left there is a double bedroom (also with a wood finish) with a window overlooking the central square of the village, where candle-lit weddings and religious ceremonies take place on summer nights. In the double room on the second floor there is an ample bathroom with a breathtaking view. The entire house has been decorated with original and restored antique furniture, dating from the end of the 19th to the early 20th Century. The garden, as well as having a view of the river and mountains, is pleasantly sunny, and whether you are reading or eating, you can enjoy the freshness of the evening without being seen by anyone.

Its garden completely hidden from the surrounding houses, with splendid night-sky views undisturbed by light pollution. Whilst ancient, the house is fitted out with every modern comfort, having been painstakingly restored in 2011 in keeping with the origonal plans. Today whilst the success of Bagni di Lucca is built mainly on the popularity of its thermal springs, it continues to nurture ancient handy-craft traditions whose arts have travelled the world such as the very singular "figurinai" plaster sculptures featuring busts of writers, poets, emperors, kings, sacred objects and nativity scenes.

The existence of beautiful green and rolling countryside, monuments, villas, historic theatres (Teatro Accademico) and Drama productions (another deep-rooted tradition in Bagni di Lucca) as well as the Springs make this charming town the ideal place to enjoy History, Art, Culture and Well-being in the glorious setting of Tuscany.

Further details indoors

Location description from owner

The Tuscany region

With all these characteristics helped by the friendliness of the population and the good climate it’s an ideal place for tourists and visitors. The Thermal Spa is well known and has been in function for many years helping to cure illnesses, it’s in a pleasant setting with cool and healthy air.

The nature and art of the valley helps to give a more comfortable and pleasant stay, the thermal spa is probably better than many other famous ones. Antonio Mazzarossa describes Bagni di Lucca in his “Guida ai luoghi più important dei Ducato”(The guide to the most important places in the Dukedom) of 1843: “We can say nothing has practically changed the nature, the pleasant places, the beautiful views so everything enchants you.” Heinrich Heine in his Reisebilder writes: “In Bagni di Lucca the houses rise in a village surrounded by high ground, where a picturesque group of houses look down on an enchanted valley.

There are houses scattered here and there to reach them one has to climb through vineyards, myrtle bushes, honeysuckle, laurel, oleander, geranium and other splendid flowers in brief a real paradise.” Elisabeth Stisted in her letters “from the bye-ways of Italy” wrote about her stay like this:” We have to give good details of the happy valley where we now have our residence and have passed many summers and a few winters to keep in our memories with our books in rich tranquillity. The clean air of the valley is helped by the rapid stream that flows down the mountain purifying it.

The stream that flows on the rock bed at the foot of our garden helps us to live well, surrounded by cypress and laurel trees and flowers that grow on all the window-sills.” The poet Nicolaj Platonovic Ogaev writes to a lady friend on the 31st of May 1843:“Please come here.I want to see you - but also because Bagni di Lucca is one of the most beautiful places in Italy.

Cocciglia

Cocciglia has been built in century 908, it's a Middle Ages village.
There are a lot of outdoor activities available nearby. Cocciglia is first remembered in a parchment of 985 as a village of the population of Casabasciana. It’s name derives from a late Roman settler Caucilius o Cocilius. It was in possession of the Lupari family of Bennabio and it followed their fate.

Cocciglia was a defence outpoost for the villages in the Controneria and Corsena. There was always rivalry between Cocciglia and Palleggio and a legend tells that in one of these conflicts Chiarello was killed near a bridge called Ponte Vecchio.

The parish church is consecrated to San Bartolomeo it has only one aisle but the bell tower is a masterpiece made with an arch which is based on two shelves, one enbeded in the doorway and the other in the wall of the priests house situated opposite the bell tower. The organ in the church bears an inscription by pen and dates 1860. One can also see the remains of the tuff walls that once surrounded the village.
