Description from owner

Description

Situated in a peaceful, private and very picturesque rural valley this is the perfect get away from it all cottage, in an elevated position with fabulous views and set in the grounds of the owners' property. We've been described as "a priceless gem on the Welsh border'" and "the jewel in the crown." So before you choose your cottage in the Hay On Wye area, please read our reviews to see why our guests consistently award us 5 stars.

We are never complacent and we are constantly seeking ways to make your stay more memorable. There are fabulous walks in the area. Steve can supply

you with detailed maps and lots of advice.

The Wye is also a wonderful spot for kayaking or canoeing. We can point you in the right direction for centres that offer canoe hire- you can travel from pub to pub on the water- and the bird life on offer on the river is exceptional. Look out for kingfishers and also otters. The Offa's Dyke national trail is close by and the area is rich in cultural history.

Although not a bed and breakfast, you'd be forgiven for thinking we are since our welcome pack includes lots of goodies- including our own home made bread, cake and preserves, local butter and bacon, granola, good coffee, organic tea, fruit juice and eggs from our own hens! We can even tell you which hens laid your eggs...

Close to the Brecon Beacons National Park- with its recently acquired Dark Sky Status and fabulous walking- and the Black Mountains, with the magnificent Hay Bluff amongst the peak definitely worth exploring, The Byre offers the perfect romantic getaway for two people. Peaceful seclusion within a glorious rural setting yet only two miles from Hay on Wye with its great bookshops and fabulous independent shops as well as excellent pubs and restaurants nearby. The oak framed conservatory is the perfect place for watching wildlife or sipping a gin and tonic whilst our horses and sheep graze below. There are superb night skies for stargazers- and we supply binoculars for keen birdwatchers too. We have a barbecue on hand for those long, sunny days and a cosy log burner (with all logs supplied free of charge) should you wish to curl up on the sofa! Welsh blankets and beautiful bed linen will help you to enjoy a great night's sleep.

Further details indoors

The Byre is set amidst fields and hills, once part of the famous Baskerville Estate. The barn has retained its original oak beams and has been restored sympathetically to reflect its 300 year history. The Welsh Oak kitchen- hand made by a local craftsman- is well equipped with granite sinks and worktops, fridge, electric oven and hob. The cosy shower room has a heated towel rail as well as luxury bath robes and toiletries . The locally hand made Welsh Walnut bed has an organic cotton and wool mattress as well as a Welsh Wool Duvet. There's a roomy oak wardrobe, again craftsman made with local timbers. Our welcome pack is legendary and we provide all essential staples for the kitchen and our own fresh herbs when in season. We also provide a free laundry service. The Byre is stocked with books and DVDS and we can provide local maps for walking and lots of ideas for places to visit! Bikes- and horses- can be hired locally and fishing on the Wye as well as kayaking prove to be very popular with guests. On arrival- in the cooler months- you will find the log stove lit, and The Byre will be cosy and welcoming for your stay. There is always a home made cake to tuck into or we can provide canapes for special occasions. Our welcome pack ensures you will have enough for your first breakfast at least- we can even tell you which hens have laid your eggs!- and whenever possible all our produce is local, including bacon, and Steve makes the bread too! If it is a special weekend (we have had five proposals of marriage here! ) let us know. The champagne will be chilled and the lights will be low. We are nearby should you need us but we will always respect your privacy. Read our reviews- our guests think we are really special. I AM SORRY BUT WE ARE ALREADY FULLY BOOKED FOR HAY FESTIVAL 2017.

Further details outdoors

Fforest Cwm is a haven for wildlife and during your stay you might see foxes, badgers, squirrels, hedgehogs and numerous birds such as the red kite and buzzards, occasional hen harrier on the moors nearby and skylarks from January onwards. You will have a totally private terrace and garden with furniture as well as feed for the birds and a barbecue- free fuel also provided. If you are a keen horse rider we can arrange riding locally for you or suggest where you might try out canoeing or kayaking. The views across our valley are glorious so you may want to just relax and chill out- but for the more energetic there is fabulous walking close by- Offa's Dyke path is of course a favourite- whilst the Black Mountains and Brecon Beacons are just a short drive away.

Getting around

The nearest train stations are in Hereford, Leominster or Abergavenny but buses are not that regular so we do think that a car is the best option for the area! Once you are here however you can walk into our village easily and Hay is just over two miles away. There are lovely walks close to us and indeed to Hay. We can loan you maps and lots of advice is on hand for things to do and see.

Interaction with guest

We live in the farmhouse next door to The Byre so we are nearby if you need any advice, help or indeed if you just want to chat about what our beautiful area has to offer. But we promise not to spoil your privacy and we appreciate that you have chosen us so that you "can get away from all." You might want to meet our horses, sheep, hens or dogs. Just let us know!

“Cosy, peaceful place”

Reviewed 11 Apr 2018

My husband and I stayed here to celebrate our 1st wedding anniversary for a few nights. We very much enjoyed our stay here at The Byre. We loved the character features, the wood burner and the warm, cosy atmosphere. Also the location was great, we felt like we were away from everything! It was particularly pleasant to observe the wild birds and other wildlife. We like that Michele and Steve have their own chickens to provide fresh eggs. The homemade bread and lemon drizzle cake was DELICIOUS! We enjoyed the local walks, towns and villages, and the Welsh countryside. All in all we would recommend.

Owner's reply: We are pleased that you enjoyed your stay at The Byre. Steve and I work exceptionally hard to make it special for our guests. When guests appreciate how hard we work and furthermore look after our special place, we feel that it's all been worth it.

“Perfect relaxed and cosy break”

Reviewed 15 Dec 2017

We've stayed here three or four times now - and will be returning again. It's quiet, relaxing and cosy with the log fire. Good walks nearby, close to Hay-on-Wye to spend hours hunting for books. Friendly, wonderful.

Owner's reply: Thank you both so very much for choosing us again and for this lovely review. We sincerely hope that we will indeed see you again!

“Home from home”

Reviewed 13 Oct 2016

We had a lovely relaxing week in this stylish and comfortable cottage set in a beautiful location. Michele and Steve were very welcoming and attentive without being intrusive- a difficult skill they have mastered. We also loved the homemade lemon drizzle cake! Lots to see and do locally with walks up on the Black mountains and Bedwyns.

Owner's reply: Thank you both very much indeed for choosing to stay at The Byre. It was lovely for us to see you really enjoying our beautiful part of the world. Thank you for taking the time to write a review too. We do hope to see you again!

“A wonderful escape”

We thoroughly enjoyed our time at The Bryre it was like a home from home. Cosy and warm on arrival with the log fire burning away. We stayed for New Years and we were spoilt with a welcome hamper, a glass of champagne and canapés to start the New Year off. The hospitality was lovely and the scenery is beautiful we will definitely be planning another trip soon.

Owner's reply: Thank you for your lovely review. We were glad you found it to be a home from home. We do our very best to ensure that you have a warm, cosy retreat in which to recharge those batteries. Best of luck for 2016 and we hope to see you again before too long.

“Another Outstanding Stay”

Reviewed 29 Oct 2015

This was our return visit to the Byre and it did not let us down. If you need a break away from a hectic lifestyle or peace and quiet from the city, then this is the place for you! As always, we were very warmly welcomed and we were not disappointed with the goodies left for us on arrival - compliments to both bakers! Many thanks to both Michele and Steve! I am certain that we will be returning in the near future!

Owner's reply: Thank you both for a return visit. We are always delighted to see guests but especially when they want to keep coming back...I've just finished making the cake for the next guests. Hope they like it! Many thanks.

“Exceeded all our expectations , supremely relaxing , cracking location, lovely hosts .”

I would resist the urge to plan to much in advance, the weather in these a parts is very unpredictable . Go with an open mind and some ideas but be ready to chill. Ithe cottage is just willing you to get settled in with a book and a bottle of wine. It's super cosy and we were almost willing the temperature to drop enough to justify using the log burner. There are some fantastic and fairly easy walks resulting in spectacular views . Get yourself an OS map of the Brecon Beacons / Black mountains and find a route dependant on the weather. Do be careful, the mountains are grassy and rounded but you could come very unstuck if you chose a long high route on a day without settled weather. Hay on Wye is a great little village if a bit pricey . The owners contacted us early on with directions and a welcome message. They are very good at what they do and obviously love the place . Whilst being totally unobtrusive , they are always available for information , or just a chat. The welcome pack of fresh made bread , home made jam, lemon drizzle cake and everything for a fry up was just brilliant.

Owner's reply: What a lovely review! We wanted you to chill out and relax and you seemed to have done just that. We would dearly love to see you again. With every best wish for your future.

“So good, that we want to come back”

Reviewed 14 Jul 2015

Michele and Steve made us very welcome at The Byre, which is very well equipped and situated in a wonderful landscape. Michele also provided us with goodies like a welcome cake, home-produced eggs, bacon, home-made bread .... Much more than one would normally expect. Nearby (5 minutes' drive) are The Begwns, a fantastic hill and heather landscape for beautiful walks, Hay on Wye (10 minutes' drive) has the highest concentration of bookshops per square meter, and plenty to explore along Offa's Dyke and the Brecon Beacons. We had a wonderful time and can only recommend it.

Owner's reply: Thank you both for your lovely review! We would really love to see you both again before too long. Cake awaits!!
