Location description from manager
The Occitanie region
The Languedoc stretches from the Rhone Valley to the Spanish border and eastern Pyrenees, from the spectacular Massif Central mountain range, through hills and plains carpeted with vines and olive groves to the Mediterranean’s beaches and lagoons full of oyster and mussel beds. This rich diversity ensures that there is something to suit all tastes and interests.
The area is steeped in history from the Cathar Castles in the Pyrenean foothills to the Crusader towns of Aigues Mortes and Le Couvertorade. The Roman towns of Nimes, Arles, Narbonne and Avignon are all within a days drive. The medieval town of St Guilham le Desert is not to be missed for its fabulous setting and it’s famous abbey.
Swimming in the river at the mouth of the Gorges d’Herault is only a ten minute drive; canoes can be hired on the large sandy beach for breathtaking views as you paddle up the gorge. The beautiful Lake Salagou is twenty minutes away and offers safe bathing, windsurfing, sailing, pedelos, bike hire and horse riding. Sandy beaches on the coast are all within forty minutes drive. Several excellent Golf courses are available in Montpellier, Lamalou les Bains and Beziers.
The varied countryside is a walker’s paradise the footpaths are well marked, local tourist offices provide suggested itineraries to suit all levels of ability. The spectacular limestone rock formations give rise to wonderful gorges and scenery including the Cirque de Navacelles, Cirque de Moureze, Gorge d’Herault and the caves of Clamouse and Desmoiselles.
The sophisticated City of Montpellier is ahaven for shoppers with its ancient narrow streets offering everything from antiques to the best in French Haute Couture. There is an excellent range of restaurants and pavement cafes where you can enjoy being entertained by a wide range of street artists and musicians during the summer evenings. The newly inaugurated tramway system is highly efficient and avoids the need to take your car into the town centre.
Weekly street markets are held in Gignac, Clermont Herault and Pezenas and Lodeve, here you will find an unbeatable array of local produce including olives, cheeses, fruit, vegetables and colourful Provencal textiles. There are also daily markets in Montpellier and a weekly flea market on Sunday mornings.
The town of Clermont L'Herault offers a full range of facilities including indoor and outdoor swimming pools. The Wednesday market is particularly worth a visit with a wealth of local produce. There is a wide selection of excellent wine producers around Lake Salagou particularly in the village of Octon, all will welcome you for a tasting prior to purchasing.

“A lovely gite in a stunning location”
We stayed at Lakeside House for the last two weeks in July. (We being me, husband and two teenaged boys) .The property itself does not look like much from the front, but is spacious, well-presented, clean and well-equipped including a good range of kitchen equipment and board games. There is a small well-stocked library on the back of one of the bedrooms. The courtyard is secluded and pretty. There are three good-sized bedrooms, one of which leads into another. The only thing we didn't like was the location of the barbecue - it's built into the wall of the house and under vines which have been grown to provide some shade on the patio area. It could do with being a bit further away, although you don't have to use it!! The gite is about a five minute drive from Lac Salagou, which has an ethereal beauty and a number of easily accessible beaches. We took our dog and a couple of canoes and spent lots of time on the lake. There were not many tourists when we were there either. There is plenty to do in the area, especially if you like walking and canoeing but don't mind a drive to the nearest restaurant (although there is a fish and chip van which spends most of the day in the village). There is a large cellar space on the ground floor at the front of the house where beach and lake equipment can be easily stored. There's plenty of room for everything. The dog lost weight with all the swimming but we all put some on with the excellent local wine, bread, and cheese. A bread van comes a couple of times a week and there are also some good vineyards locally which offer degustations.
