Clare Island/Oilean Chliara
Clare island is 3and 1/2 miles form the mainland point of Roonagh and itself is 5 miles long by 3 miles wide . It is dominated by 2 hills:Croaghmore 1,500 feet and Glen hill 729 feet. It has supported a human population of considerable size for the last 5,000 years and now has a resident population of approximately 170.
Clare Island is famous as the ancestral home to the 16th Century Pirate Queen Grace O'Malley or Granuaile as she was better known. One of her strongholds was a Castle situated at the entrance to Clare Island where it still stands today. This remarkable pirate queen received with full honours at the tudor court of Elizabeth 1st despite been proclaimed an outlaw and was granted the freedom to live in peace for the rest of her days. She died in about 1603. Also on the west side of the island is a 16th century abbey and legend has it that it's here where Grannuailes burial tomb is.The abbey contains a series of medieval wall and ceiling paintings which are among only 4 such paintworks that exist in Ireland. On the very North of the island perched on the cliff edge stands Clare Island lighthouse, not in operation anymore but is now a luxury B&B.The cliff's are also home to many nesting birds in the summer months. The remains of a 19th century Napoleonic signal tower are situated at the weatern tip of the island with spectacular view of Inishturk island and Inishboffin in the distance. In 1909 the first major biological survey in the world of a specific area began on Clare Island and was coordinated by the famous naturalist Robert Lloyd Praegar and became known at the Praegar studies.
