The Occitanie region

Clara

Clara is a very peaceful, typical village of the region with the local church, boules court and tennis court. It also benefits from having one of the best restaurants in the region, 50m from the apartment, which is definitely worth a visit. The river runs through the village and provides a wonderful setting off point for a gentle walk, or a more strenuous hike.

This area benefits from being in the sunniest region of France (around 300 days of sunshine per year), and enjoys warm weather from March all the way through to October. November and December are cooler but still with sunshine. January, February and March are great skiing months (less than

1 hrs drive to the ski resorts).

Clara

The nearest main town, just a few kilometres away, is Prades. A thriving market town, it has many great shops and restaurants as well as a lively market on both Tuesday and Saturday mornings, where you can buy local produce such as the peaches and cherries that are grown in abundance here, fresh vegetables, wonderful cheeses…. and of course the excellent wine!

There are events and festivals throughout the year. Spanish cellist Pablo Casals fled to Prades during the Spanish civil war, stayed and established the festival that now bears his name. The Catalan summer school takes over the town for two weeks in August, and there is dancing in the square every night during this period.

Places of Interest: For touring the area, Clara offers an excellent base. Just a few of the sites of interest within easy driving distance are listed below:

* Villefranche de Conflent, a fine example of a medieval walled town

* Little Yellow Train, catch this train from Villefranche and enjoy the specatular mountain views right into the Pyrenees.

* Grottes de Canalettes, magnificent renowned caves with an incredible light and sound show

* St Martin du Canigou, 9th century abbey perched impressively high on the hillside with fantastic scenery and walks.

* St Michel de Cuxa, 6th century abbey that hosts concerts during the Pablo Casals festival but is also open for viewing most of the year.

* St Thomas les Bains, outstanding natural thermal hot springs in wonderful outdoor mountain setting.

* There are a number of Cathar castles to visit in the area, take a day out of your holiday to learn the fascinating history of the persecution of the Cathars.

* Skiing in winter - we are less than 1 hour from some of the Pyrenees mountain ski resorts.

* Animal parks at Casteill and Les Angles and a Safari park in Sigean

* Aqualand , Waterpark in St Cyprien - a fun day out for all the family, with water slides, wave pools and much more.

* Wine tasting and tours, visit one of dozens of vineyards in the area and taste some of the varied distinctive wines.

* Carcassonne, the fairytale medieval walled town.

* Spain, a day out to the beaches of the Costa Brava, Barcelona, Girona or the Dali museum in Figueras.

* The unique light in the region enticed many famous artists such as Picasso and Matisse to make it their home, vist the Art museum in Ceret and dozens of galleries throughout the department.

* If you are looking for more adventurous activities can we suggest, mountaineering, skiing, horse riding, canyonning, kayaking, diving, kite and wind surfing, sailing, walking, cycling and much much more.

The local town of Prades – just a 10 minute drive – has 3 supermarkets and is world renowned for its Pablo Casals Music Festival held every August. There is a large market every Tuesday and a smaller produce market on a Saturday.

The city of Perpignan – is steeped in history with numerous historic buildings, art galleries and restaurants. Every Thursday during high summer the city comes alive with street entertainers and is an excellent place for a family evening out (it's also very child friendly). The railway station was proclaimed by Salvador Dali as “The centre of the world” although we reckon it's just like any other.

Wine lovers will find a wide range of tasting or buying opportunities available, Languedoc wines are growing in stature and we are able to provide many recommendations for some of the more interesting vineyards.

Beaches - The nearest Mediterranean beach at Canet can be reached within 1hr whilst the famous Cote Vermeille with historic fishing ports of Collioure, Port Vendres and Banyuls are also woth a day out. We have plenty of restaurant recommendations on this part of the stunning coastline.

The Mountains - The walled town of Villefranche (15 minute drive) signals the start of the higher mountains of the Pyrenees. It is also the starting point for the famous Train Jaune (Yellow Train). Canyoning, climbing, horse riding, quad bikes, mountain biking and walking are all within easy reach

The area is also famous for its history – notably the Cathars. Their castles – built on top of rocky crags – are a must for all ages. Many are within a 45 minute drive and are handily situated close to some of the best vineyards in the area!

Spain – the Spanish border can be reached within 45 minutes. The magnificent Dali Museum in Figueras is just 20 minute drive from the border, and Barcelona about another hour.

The whole region is a delight; with Clara at its centre, provides beautiful green scenery, with Mount Canigou dominating the skyline and the Pyrenees just a few miles away. You can be swimming in the sea in the morning, and hiking in the mountains in the afternoon, skiing in the morning and paddling in the afternoon. It really does offer you everything!
