Description

This simple country house is situated in its own olive groves, on the edge of the Maiella mountain range in the Maiella National Park of Abruzzo. It has two bedrooms, one with its own balcony, all with gorgeous views. You can enjoy complete peace and quiet at Casa Duchi, as this little part of the world has remained unchanged for generations.

The nearby beaches on the beautiful Costa Dei Trabocchi are just 30 minutes away and are very quiet, even in the peak summer months. There are also lots of mountain walks to explore as well as gorgeous medieval villages and towns.

If skiing is your thing, in the winter there are 2 small ski resorts within 30-45 minutes drive, so if you have been out on the piste all day, you can come back and get toasty by the wood burning stove. It is also a great location for hiking, cycling and rafting.

Location description from owner

The Abruzzo region

The beauty of Abruzzo is its sparsely populated, quiet, but wild landscape. It really is a hidden gem of Italy, unknown even to many Italians. Abruzzo is dominated by the prolific Apennine mountain range, and Casa Duchi nestles nicely between the foothills of the Maiella and the Adriatic Coast, making it a wonderful holiday location.

The house sits on the edge of the Maiella National Park, which is one of 13 PAN Parks established across Europe by the Worldwide Fund for Nature in 1998 to protect areas of wilderness. The Maiella park comprises just under 100 square miles of unspoiled mountains and amazing canyons to enjoy.

Abruzzo has a temperate climate most of the year round, except in the winter months when the snowfall makes it an excellent location for skiing and other winter sports. The summer months are extremely balmy, but the cool mountain air brings some relief. Spring and Autumn are still lovely and warm.

As well as being abundant with natural beauty, Abruzzo also boasts some of the finest Medieval architecture in Italy. There are many wonderful towns and villages to explore, with great museums and churches.

It would be impossible to try and describe any part of Italy without alluding to cuisine, and Abruzzo is no exception to the delicious food available throughout the country. There are many wonderful pasta dishes with Chitarra Allo Zafferano as one of its most famous. Abruzzo is also well known for an array of spelt (a form of wheat) dishes, including risotto and minestrone soup. For wine drinkers there are many great local wines with Montepulciano D'Abruzzo being the most famous. We can provide details of local wine tours if that is of interest.

As a Catholic country, there are many religious holidays and festivals throughout the year, but most take place in August. From July to October there are also many wonderful local food festivals.

Civitella Messer Raimondo

Nature enthusiasts will be extremely happy here, as will anyone who loves hiking, walking, cycling, rafting, not forgetting skiing. With the coast only 30 minutes drive from Casa Duchi, there is plenty to do and see for families with children, but equally it would be an ideal holiday spots for couples and/or groups.

Nearby

The nearest town is the sleepy Fara San Martino which is 7 minutes drive. It has two very good grocery shops, a bakery and a couple of bars. The market is every Wednesday. Fara also is home to the famous De Cecco pasta factory, which is down in the valley. It also has a good trattoria/pizzeria called La Villetta at the bottom of the town.

If you are looking for more choice for shopping Casoli is 20 minutes drive from Casa Duchi and has two good-sized supermarkets. Casoli is a beautiful medieval town with a fantastic market every Friday. Our favourite hang-out is the Piano Bar on the corner opposite the town square. They also make their own pastries, pizza and ice-cream, as well as doing great coffee.

The Grotta del Cavallone, 10 minutes drive from Casa Duchi is an amazing cave near Lama dei Peligni, The cave lies within the mountains of the Majella National Park, and is accessed via cable car. The cave itself is 10–20 meters wide and nearly the same height throughout, with numerous stalagmites, flowstone, and rimstone pools. Well worth a visit and the kids will love it!

Further afield

The coast in Abruzzo is called The Trabocchi Coast' named after the traditional woodern fishing platforms. Several have been opened as restaurants, where you can watch your lunch or dinner being fished up from the water, and eat the fresh catch overlooking the waves. The coast itself is beautiful and very quiet even in the busy summer months. You can enjoy stony or sandy beaches, which are mainly quite shallow so perfect for small children.

If you prefer the mountains, Pescocostanzo is a pristine mountain town with fantastic Medieval architecture. It has a whole range of wonderful restaurants and bars and is great for skiing. 40 Minutes from Casa Duchi and well worth a visit.

Anverse Degli Abruzzi is a 1 hour spectacular drive from Casa Duchi. We only discovered this beautiful valley recently but we are so happy we did, and even happier that there was a great restaurant waiting for us! La Fiacola is superb and is open most days for lunch and dinner.

There is much more to explore in the area, but these are some of our favourites. If you book with us, you will have access to our full guidebook, and all our maps. Contact us for more details.
