Belvedere is an old Abruzzo house with lots of character. It has been completely refurbished and fitted with all modern conveniences. The house has two levels with a large garden and private 10x5 metre swimming pool. The views are spectacular in all directions of both blue sea and high mountains. The house is set on its own land 3km from the pretty little village of Civitaquana on the road to Cugnoli in the Gran Sasso national park. The village at 550 meters altitude is small but friendly with a baker, butchers and five cafe bars and many local restaurants within five minutes. The local area is famous for its hiking, walking and trekking. There are many natural, archaeological and historical sights close by and of course the beauty of the Gran Sasso national park. The lovely beaches of the Adriatic are also only 30 minutes away.
Belvedere is also a great location for spring or winter breaks. The magnificent scenery of the snow capped Appenine Mountains and the cosy wood burning fire make it ideal for a short break during the spring/winter months.
For those who are keen skiers, there is an abundance of high quality ski resorts all within an hours drive from the house. This is one of Abruzzo's best kept secrets! Passo Lanciano, Roccaraso and Campo Imperatore just to name a few of the well equipped resorts enjoyed by many Italians. If skiing is not for you, simply walking and taking in the fresh mountain air will regenerate and refresh you. Coffee Al Fresco in the winter sunshine is highly reccomended as are the many local restaurants offering traditional home made Abruzzesi dishes!

The Abruzzo region
Abruzzo is outlined by the Apennine Mountains. The mountains that run through the region include some of the highest peaks in the chain: both Gran Sasso and the Maiella group are over 8,000 ft high. The landscape flattens as you move eastward towards the sea. Rather than mountains, you find soft hills, often covered by forests. Abruzzo was originally home to the Piceni population, who also occupied the southern part of the Marche.
Abruzzo was conquered by the Romans, who divided the territory into two parts. With the fall of the Empire, Abruzzo fell under the control of the Byzantines, the Lombards and the Franks. The region later became part of the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies and was under the Norman domination when Emperor Frederick II united the area and founded the city of L'Aquila. During the successive battles between the French and the Spanish for control of the kingdom of Naples, until the unification of Italy, Abruzzo experienced a long period of unrest and emigration.

"Fantastic value. Peace and tranquility."
We had wonderful holiday in Abruzzo and the Belvedere house proved the perfect location for us. The pool is fantastic, great size, new and wonderful views while swimming. The superb beaches on the coast were easily reachable by car. We loved the Nature park on our doorstep and found many great little restaurants in the many quaint villages. A real gem in a beautiful region.
