TRULLI
The trulli, belonging to Unesco heritage, are original and primitive dry-stone buildings with a central plant on which the typical cone shaped dome raises.
They were built by peasants using the stone removed from their vineyards. The thickness of wall together with the reduced opening of the windows make them naturally cool in Summer and warm in Winter. The lamie, square shaped structures are often annexed to the trulli and were used as peasants' houses.

FOOD
Fundamental ingredient of this experience is the simple but creative Apulian food. Famous for its dairy products and its renowned wines, the characteristic is use of local ingredients and wild herbs and spices.

Location description from owner

The Puglia region

Cisternino sits in a historic zone of Itria Valley (Valle d'Itria) which is best known for its prehistoric conical, dry stone buildings, trulli (that are preserved under UNESCO legislation due to cultural significance), and its fertile soil making it home to the Salento wine region. The territory of the town of Cisternino was inhabited since the Palaeolithic.

The name of Cisternino derives from eponymous hero Sturnoi, companion of Diomede, who founded the town after the Trojan War.
Afterwards, the center was occupied by the Romans, who called it Sturninum, occupying its territory after the neo-colonization and the return from expansion wars in the Mediterranean. The Goths, with their looting, devastated the old town of Sturninum. The current Old Town is reborn thanks to the Basilian monks in the Middle Ages, that called it Cis-sturnium (below Sturnium). The first testimony of the House of Cisternino is the discovery, under the Romanesque church of S. Nicola, of the remains of a small Christian church, dating from around 1000. Pope Alexander III, in a papal bull of 26 February 1180 gave the church and Casale of Cisternino to the Bishop of Monopoli.

“LA MACINA : MOLTO PIU' CHE TRULLI ....”

Reviewed 27 May 2013
