“Nice secluded place with good sunrises”

Reviewed 22 Nov 2012

Hi I just stayed at the engine house for 4 weeks as wanted somewhere quiet could do a project. It is a pretty and peaceful place on the edge of the village. It is very private (so in a way you don't actually feel you are on the edge of the village at all) and you hear the occasional car in the lane (down the hill) if outside (can't hear if inside) and other than that just the noise of the stream at the bottom of the hill and the birds (both very therapeutic). The center of the village is about 20 mins walk away. The actual house is a lot bigger than the photos appear to show. The sitting room / kitchen felt about twice the size of the photos when i first walked in. The heating system really warmed the place up well and quickly (I was there in November) and the place really did have everything you needed. Mobile phone reception was a bit dodgy but was fine if you went 20 metres down the drive. The views from the engine house / driveway are roughly east facing and I had a couple of amazing sunrises. They would be even better in the summer I imagine. Just up from the engine house is a strip of grass with a clearing in the woods at one end which is a sun trap and a quarry at the other end which is really quiet cool and filled with trees so is very pretty and had some birds of prey living there. If you want an easy 20 minute stroll this is on your door step without going on any roads :). You also get to see th elight of the setting sun on the hills opposite in the evening (also very pretty) The lake up the hill is also very peaceful and you have options to sit on 3 sides of the lake so can always be in the sun....there are also views all the way to exmoor (I think) from a field by the lake........ All in all a really nice quiet place to stay. I recommend it and would go back some time. Thanks PS Floors are a bit skiddy so if you are used to walking rounds in socks all the time (like me) is worth taking a pair of slippers

“comfortable stay, interesting history around the cottage and very friendly owners”

Reviewed 29 Sep 2012

Very quiet location with just the sound of a stream, lots of wildlife around, deer in the garden. The private lake is beautiful and secluded - absolute silence! Nice beach at Exmouth which was less than a 30 minute drive and the miniture pony centre at Mortenhampsted was a great hit. The owners could not have been more friendly and welcoming. There is a lot of history about the cottage that caught the little one's imagination and we spent a lot of time imagining what the old workings would have been like, piecing it together from photo's, descriptions and a few ruins.
