The England region

Dorset is famous for the Jurassic Coast World Heritage Site, which features landforms such as Lulworth Cove, the Isle of Portland, Chesil Beach and Durdle Door, as well as the holiday resorts of Bournemouth, Poole, Weymouth, Swanage, and Lyme Regis. Dorset is the principal setting of the novels of Thomas Hardy, who was born near Dorchester. The county has a long history of human settlement and some notable archaeology, including the hill forts of Maiden Castle and Hod Hill. Bournemouth lies in the heart of Dorset on the south coast.

Bournemouth is a “shoppers paradise” with most of the town centre being pedestrianised and offering shops, boutiques, beauty salons, restaurants, cafes and coffee shops, perfect for some well deserved retail therapy. In the evening there is a real buzz in Bournemouth, the town is renowned for being a stylish evening out with over 250 restaurants to chose from, and if its a cocktail or a glass of wine and some dancing you are in the mood for then you truly are spoilt for choice -there's a whole host of bars, nightclubs, pubs and wine bars on offer.

The breathtaking Dorset coastline offers everything from picturesque harbours, long sandy beaches, dramatic cliff top formations, hidden coves and rock pools.

The Jurassic Coast is England's only natural World Heritage Site, and is a walker’s paradise. Of equal appeal to the walker is the New Forest, England's newest National Park, but steeped in history.

Poole Harbour is a stunning location for all types of watersport. The harbour and it's islands offer a haven for wildlife including the bird sanctuary on the world renowned Brownsea Island.

Christchurch

Christchurch is a beautiful town located in Dorset and within close proximity of Hampshire and the New Forest. Christchurch town has existed in one form or another since the iron age when the area between the river Avon and the river Stour was used as a trading point and safe mooring for visiting traders. Throughout history the town has adapted to suit the era and today, as a result, has a multitude of tales to tell and features to see.

One of the main attractions is the Christchurch Priory Church which in fact has had a church on the site since 800AD, and the present building was started in 1094 by Ranulf Flambard which still retains its Saxon Street layout, is reputedly the longest Parish Church in England and the tower of the priory can be accessed via 176 steps to get to the very top.

Hengistbury Head is a scenic and historic headland sheltering Christchurch Harbour. Hengistbury Head incorporates many different habitats and supports a wide variety wildlife and rare plant species. It is also a site of significant archaeological importance. For many years it has been a site of scientific interest and a major tourist attraction. Each year it attracts visitors from all over the world who enjoy hiking and rambling across its natural, yet accessible terrain. In the Summer the sandy beaches in particular, are a major draw for families. The lowland area to the West of Hengistbury Head is extensively use for kite flying and is also a popular picnic site.

The main beach near Christchurch is at Mudeford, which offers sandy beaches and quaint beach huts. Mudeford Quay with its old buildings, lobster pots, cafe, pub and fresh fish stall draw visitors in large numbers throughout the year. From here a ferry crosses the run to Hengistbury Head, sea fishing trips and local water trips can be found.
