From the owner

Perfect for relaxing, Amaryia House is a bright sunny home within easy walking distance of the beautiful Forest of Dean and Wye Valley. The family room incorporating living, dining and kitchen areas enables comfortable family living and a separate lounge means space for everyone. A conservatory off the lounge leads onto a large paved patio area, enabling easy outdoor living. The gardens are largely laid to lawn with flower beds, giving peaceful areas to sit and to play in. There is a utility area and an outside tap for washing down bikes and equipment. We welcome pets, as we know they can be an important part of a family and dogs will love the freedom of forest walks. We provide most of what you will need and can give you a list of contents if that is useful. Amaryia House is very close to the Forest Holidays lodges in the area, and our guests can use the lovely shop and cafe found there, helpful if you don't want to cook breakfast in the morning. Coffee and cake there is recommended.

COVID-19 update: We have achieved the 'Good to Go' certification from Visit England and AA Covid Confident certification, meaning we have followed government and industry COVID-19 guidelines, including a Risk Assessment and a process to maintain cleanliness and aid social distancing. E.g. 24-hour gap between bookings used to help mitigate any associated health risks and allow time for a deep clean. Please contact us about our COVID-19 arrangements; we are happy to answer queries. We will be very flexible regarding refunding deposit and payments, right up to the last minute. From 17th May, two households or 6 people can stay at the house, though this is likely to change from 19th July 2021.

Upstairs three double bedrooms, one with en suite, and a family bathroom, completes the house. Bedroom 3 has a zip and link king size bed, so can be presented as twin beds if required (please let us know). And cot/highchair/stairgate/guest bed can be provided.

Within walking distance of the house there are two pretty pubs offering food and a warm welcome - the New Inn, Shortstanding, and the Dog and Muffler, Joyford. There are many other pubs and restaurants in the area too - lots to choose from. In these circumstances best to book, however, and check beforehand.

Symonds Yat is very close (50-minute walk), with a cabin for tea and cake. The River Wye is in walking distance, with a wire suspension bridge for walking over at Biblins (might be closed currently, as needs repair). Along either bank the walk takes you up to the Saracen's Head pub, ice creams and boat hire.

The Royal Forest of Dean became a National Forest in 1938 and was a mining area, with coal and iron ore being mined, mining dating back to Roman times. Caves can be visited (Clearwell Caves), a coal mine can be visited (Hopewell Colliery), the iron ore mining has left landscape that can be viewed (Puzzle Wood). The local museum (Dean Heritage Centre) has a wealth of further information.

The Forest is in demand by film companies, being used recently for Dr Who and Harry Potter filming, such is its beauty and interest. Most recently was a new Star Wars movie, where the Puzzle Wood setting is clearly visible to those that know it. Outlaw was also filmed in the area, and the TV series Merlin too. Apparently Coleford's St John's Street was used to film a Renault Clio advert. In 1993 Symonds Yat rock was used to film Shadowlands. Heavy metal fans might like to know that a Black Sabbath album was recorded at Clearwell Castle and Rockfields near Monmouth is a well-known recording studio.

Amaryia House is on a raised part of the Wye Valley. You can walk down to the river in about half an hour (but be ready for the steep climb back up). The House lies about one mile from Herefordshire to the West and five miles from Monmouth and Wales to the South-East. This border-style history means a lot of interest in the area, such as Offa's Dyke and the Wye Valley walk, both of which wander close by.

The Forestry Commission has provided many cycle paths and way-marked paths, with leaflets to guide the visitor. The paths weave through places of interest from mining sites like New Fancy, to bird watching areas such as Nags Head Bird Reserve and the well-known Symonds Yat with its peregrine falcons (and cabin café!)

Being on top of the hill, the air is fresh and clean - and the hilltop catches snow fall, which spreads out a pretty clean white blanket, drawing in photographers. In fact the area is extremely photogenic in so many ways from wild life to scenery.

Easter Monday sees the local market town of Coleford packed with visitors to a Festival of Transport - classic cars, historic vehicles and more.

Some local villages have fêtes on various days through the year such as Parkend Carnival on the August Bank Holiday.

Monmouth and Ross-on-Wye are within a short car ride of the cottage and both are very pretty to visit and
