Description

Hoo Cottage is the quintessential Cotswold stone, thatched cottage. Its first registered owners took occupation in 1639 just a few years after the death of William Shakespeare when King Charles I was on the throne and the English Civil War was still three years hence. Almost 400 years later it is Grade II listed and tucked away in a quiet residential area of Chipping Campden. To enter the cottage is to take a step back in time but without the discomforts of 17th century life. Its low ceilings, exposed beams, flagstone floors, log fire and uneven walls are all redolent of times past but the fittings and furnishings make it a most comfortable holiday home. The cottage garden with its flower and shrub borders provide a secluded haven from the outside world.

The cottage is ideally located a short walk from Chipping Campden High Street, often described as the most perfect in England. The honey coloured stone buildings were built mainly by wealthy medieval wool merchants between 14th and 17th centuries. From thatched cottages to elegant town houses, from the grand wool church of St James to the imposing, open-sided Market Hall erected in 1627, Chipping Campden is a constant delight. A wealth of small shops, good restaurants, tea rooms, hotels and pubs provide for all tastes.

The town nestles in a valley in the North Cotswolds whose rolling hills and picturesque villages form an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Footpaths abound, whilst Broadway, Stow-on-the-Wold and Bourton-on-the-Water are a short drive away. Shakespeare's Stratford upon Avon, Warwick Castle and Blenheim Palace are within easy reach and, for garden enthusiasts, the renowned Hidcote Gardens is just one of several local attractions.

Chipping Campden

Chipping Campden is a small market town built largely by medieval merchants from wealth gained from the wool trade. When coming from the A44 you have an outstanding view and, upon entering the town, you are welcomed by many thatched cottages.

One of the most charming and unspoilt of the Cotswold towns, it is often described as having the most perfect High Street in England, with it’s beautiful honey coloured stone buildings dating from the 14th to the 17th centuries. The Market Hall (now in the care of the National Trust) is an imposing open sided stone arched building, erected in 1627 to provide shelter for the local produce market.

Visitors are welcome in the Old Silk Mill and the workshop of Harts (Gold and Silversmiths) who are descendants of C R Ashbee’s Guild.
