The Italian Riviera region
The Tigullio is a territory which is part of the province of Genoa.
Located along the Riviera ligure East of Genoa, it includes the stretch of coastline called golfo del Tigullio and the cities with overlook the Ligurian Sea.
The Gulf of Tigullio spans the sea bordered by the regional natural park of Portofino at the North and Punta Manara in Sestri Levante in the South.
The area that it dominates is mainly mountainous, characterized by the presence of some of the most important valleys of the Apennines of Liguria, Valle Sturla, Val D'aveto and Val Graveglia Val Petronio They are rich in itineraries where the visitors can discover local traditions , historical abbeys and Basilicas or enjoy the hiking trails. The Entella River, the most important of the territory, empties into the Gulf between Chiavari and Lavagna, after 40 km race. The course offers some interesting itineraries for those who like birdwatching and bikes.
A special mention deserves the traditional cuisine of the Tigullio Gulf, based on simple but tasty dishes, recalling the spirit of the natives who have had to manage their diet along the centuries with natural resources, such as olive oil from extended olive groves, seafood, vegetables from the garden, chestnuts of the forest. Either along the coast and in the hinterland of the Gulf there is plenty of choice for typical restaurants.
Of great interest also is the craftsmanship that is kept alive by craftspeople skilled in carpentry with the production
Chiavari: A small harmonious city - with in addition the gentle, relaxing and at the same time majestic presence of the sea. Chiavari is a real gem shining splendidly at the very heart of the Tigullio gulf. Among the main cities in Liguria, the town once known as Clavarium ("key to the valleys") on the alluvial plain formed by the River Entella and it is in a favourable position for communication with the Po valley area. Chiavari is a quiet and welcoming town but also a bathing resort and centre for nautical sports. In the heart of the old town, porticoed Via Martiri della Liberazione has retained its vocation for commerce: this is the ancient "straight alley" which became the most representative street of the bourgeoisie in the mid-fourteenth century. Some very old handicraft activities still survive in Chiavari - the production of "campanino" chairs and macramé lace-making, which can be admired in the little antiques market that is open on the second week-end of every month in the old town streets.
Chiavari is also well known for its leisure port which can berth about 450 boats
