The Neighbourhood

Short House is in an 'Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty' on the World Heritage Jurassic Coast, 3/4 of a mile east of the village of West Bexington. The peace and solitude of such a stunning location and the sound of the waves on Chesil Beach make it a very special place. There are spectacular views over Lyme Bay, the Dorset and Devon coastline. Lots of things to do in this excellent holiday location.

Short House is in an area of very low ambient light; on clear nights it is a great location for stargazing.

Getting Around: 6 miles from Bridport/West Bay, 12 miles from Dorchester. The nearest shops are in West Bexington, 3/4 of a mile to the west, Abbotsbury and Burton Bradstock; both within a 5 minute drive. The nearest train stations are Dorchester South (about 25 minutes by car) and Yeovil Junction (about 35 minutes by car). The nearest bus stop (with services to Bridport and Dorchester) is about 1.5 miles away. You really need a car to stay here, or take taxis; available from Bridport.

Other Things to Note: There is a washing machine/tumble dryer. iron and ironing board.

A carpeted attic space with limited headroom can be used as additional bedroom space for two, by arrangement. It should be noted that the attic space is not building control compliant as a bedroom, and therefore a liability waiver is required if it is to be used.

The England region

Dorset is 'Hardy country': lush, lovely and - compared to its sisters Cornwall and Devon - virtually off the map. Fossil heaven, too: its beautiful Jurassic Coast, (a UNESCO World Heritage Site), is made up of 90 miles of crumbling cliffs and sparkling bays.

With more Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty than any county in England, Dorset is the quintessential unspoilt English countryside destination.

The A35/A31 provides access to the M3; Bournemouth, Southampton, Winchester and London. The intercity station at Dorchester South (12 miles) provides twice hourly services to Bournemouth, Southampton, Winchester and London (2 hrs 30 mins to London Waterloo).

LOTS TO DO IN THIS BEAUTIFUL CORNER OF ENGLAND

There are many lovely walks from the cottage; in both directions along the beach and inland. Wear's Hill, voted the best natural view in England by Country Life magazine, is about 45 minutes walk.

A private tennis court (rackets & balls provided) is on your doorstep as are the riding stables, where lessons can be arranged.

Abbotsbury Sub-Tropical Gardens (with a great colonial style cafe) is 30-40 minutes walk along the beach. Abbotsbury Swannery (the only one in the world) is another 20 minutes.

Bridport, a 15 minute drive, is a charming market town with a great selection of restaurants, bars, pubs and shops, including Waitrose. Catch a performance at Bridport Arts Centre.

West Bay Harbour (aka 'Broadchurch' on TV) also 15 minutes, with boats to hire, fishing trips and the best fish restaurant in the area; The Riverside - selling fresh fish caught by local fishermen in the bay. Hive Beach has a famously great cafe and good swimming.

Weymouth (14 miles) is the home of the Weymouth & Portland National Sailing Academy. The water here is unusually calm and clear, making it perfect for water sports. A number of golf courses are within easy reach.

There is ample parking right in front of the cottage.

“Amazing!!”

Reviewed 29 Oct 2016

Fantastic accommodation, amazing location with lots to do as a family and plenty of beach to scour. We stayed at the cottage for a week wanting a peaceful picturesque location but within east reach of other locations to visit. This was just perfect, it completely fitted the bill of what we wanted, the beach was a short walk through a field belonging to the owners where we fed their horse each day and ate our tea on the beach. Our children had tennis courts to play in at the property and a large garden space with trees to climb and play in. We decided to keep it local and visit spots within a maximum of 30 minutes drive, including West Bay and Lyme Regis. The views were breathtaking from the cottage and we have made many a fond memory on this trip.

Hi Amber, Thank you so much for such a lovely review; really appreciate it. It was a pleasure to meet you all. Delighted you had such a nice time. Hope to see you again one day. With very best wishes, Andrew & Julie.
