Description

Providing good value for money, the Gites offer comfortable and well equipped self-catering accommodation and are perfect for a quiet and relaxing holiday in the beautiful 3 Lakes area (Les Trois Lacs) of the Creuse Valley. Each of the Gites in this converted barn are comfortably furnished for four; one double bedroom and one twin with bunk beds; a good sized kitchen/diner and living area with a private deck which includes outside table and chairs overlooking the large shared garden.

Set in a very tranquil and rural area (next door to property ref. 321121 and 1433462, just the Gites, the English owners who are on hand if required for information and assistance and one retired French neighbour), we are surrounded by fabulous countryside where it appears as though time has stood still, dotted with lovely French villages and towns with lots of local markets and places to explore and enjoy. The quiet roads in this area, one of the least populated of France, make any outing a pleasure.

Location description from owner

The Limousin region

The Creuse covers about 5,565 km with a population of less than 130,000. (Covering roughly 1,000 km more than the whole of Lancashire and South Yorkshire combined, which have a population of more than 2.5 million!) This makes it one of the least populated departments in the whole of France and definitely one of the most enjoyable to explore, with glorious rolling countryside; quiet roads; many beautiful lakes, rivers and historic towns, villages and sites to see.

The climate means that shorts and tee shirts are the order of the day from mid-May on, and it is not unusual to witness a Mediterranean-type climate until quite late in the year. It does rain (how else to keep the landscape so wonderfully green?), but when it comes it is usually gentle just like everything else.

Access to La Creuse is easy and we can be reached within a day using a network of good roads leading from the ports of Calais, Caen, Cherbourg or St Malo, alternatively the Airport of Limoges is only one hour away if you want to fly-drive (a car really is essential to fully appreciate the area). We are situated approximately 25 minutes from the main A20 motorway South (we can also provide a 'stop-over' service for those travelling further South or property hunting.)

Cheniers

Le Montinazeau can be found in the North of La Creuse in an area known as Les Trois Lacs (The Three Lakes) the nearest of which is just 15 minutes away and boasts a man-made beach with safe swimming, boating, a small bar and cafe/restaurant, free parking and walks.

The nearest village is under 5 kilometres away and provides a grocery shop; Post Office and Bar/Restaurant. Larger towns are within 10 kilometres providing all services including Banks; Supermarkets; Restaurants; weekly Markets etc.

There are many areas of interest all within 30 minutes of the Gites including (but certainly not limited to) the castle at Crozant, overlooking the valley where the Sedelle and the Creuse Rivers meet; Fresseline, where Monet and other artists came to paint; The Pilgrims Way (Le Chemin de St. Jaques de Compostelle), where it follows the beautiful Sedelle River; La Souterraine with it's medieval gateways and bustling market.

Only slightly further afield is Gueret where you can find the Wolf sanctuary; the Giant Labyrinth; the famous Monts de Gueret (with miles of beautiful walks and cycling routes); Limoges (famous for its porcelain and the birthplace of Renoir); Aubusson (designated Unesco site with its tapestries); Argenton-sur-Creuse (beautiful medieval town on the river with famous historic Roman site 'Argentomagus'); Le Haute Touche (animal reserve with over 1,000 animals from all five continents in a natural environment covering over 1,000 acres).

After a busy(!) day exploring, walking, swimming, sitting... you can enjoy the peace and quiet of the garden at Le Montinazeau and watch out for the local wildlife to be seen which in the last year has included; Deer; Red Squirrel; Stone Marten; Black Kites; Buzzards; Hobby's; Woodpeckers (Green, Greater Spotted and even Black!).

If you would like any further information about the area, places to visit or things to do, please don't hesitate to contact us and we'll be happy to help.

“A perfect holiday retreat for the whole family”

Reviewed 17 Feb 2016

This was our second year, as we enjoyed it so much last year. If you want peace and quiet , lovely accommodation, great hosts who are very helpful with local knowledge, this is the perfect holiday. It is suitable for families of all ages. There is always plenty to do and places to visit , not too far away. Great for cycling, walking, running, and kayaking. Can recommend the local Bricontes and attic sales. Cant wait to return again ......

Thank you for your lovely review, it was great to see you again and we're so glad you enjoyed your stay. Look forward to welcoming you back soon.

“Amazing location, wonderful hosts, incredible value.”

Reviewed 12 Jun 2014

We arrived late afternoon hot and tired but very easily following Debbie and Andrew's clear directions. We were met with a very welcome cup of coffee, free range eggs and bottle of red. Our 4 yr old was out running around the enormous lawn and greeting the neighbouring cattle before we'd had chance to unpack the car. The gite had everything we needed for our weeks stay, including lots of outdoor games including a full sized table tennis table, and the owners were a mine of local knowledge. .(They even lent us their satnav.) They were friendly without being obtrusive and really added to our break....Our daughter loved the chickens and piglets....and hubby enjoyed the table tennis opponent. The location was idyllic yet it was very easy to get around and anyway driving on French roads was a pleasure. We will definitely be going back.

Thank you for your lovely review, we are so glad you enjoyed your stay and would be happy to welcome you back at any time.

“A wonderful holiday in a wonderful place.”

Reviewed 25 Aug 2013

Our holiday in Le Montinazeau was a wonderful experience for my whole family. My wife and I loved the peace and quiet, my 3 year old daughter loved the space to be free (we live in a second floor apartment). The gite itself was immaculate and a perfect size for our family. The style of the property fits exactly with what I had imagined of the region, it really is a pretty place. The garden and surrounding grounds are large and wonderfully kept. We were looking for a holiday to get away from our normal routine, and this was perfect. Our 3 year old could be allowed to run without worry, I think we counted at most 3 cars per day passing along the road near the property. We were made to feel very welcome by the owners no one more so than our daughter with whom they showed immense patience, 3 year olds tend to lack a sense of boundary, ours is no different. As I said, we were looking for a quiet relaxing getaway as such we were really happy just to chill in the garden and enjoy the wonderful weather, but we did venture to the local lake for a swim one afternoon, and can thoroughly recommend that other guests do the same. There is a small town nearby with a supermarket and bakery, which covered all of our food and drink requirements. The owners provided a folder filled with useful tips with things to do around the area, however a WiFi connection is available in the gite should you wish to google some more. To get there We drove for a few hours from our home in Switzerland, with a 3 year old in the car as probably should have been expected, we arrived later than planned. Thankfully when we arrived we found that tea and coffee making essentials were already in the gite, including fresh milk, no last minute shopping trips required, you could feel the stress levels falling away the second we opened the door to the gite. All in all Le Montinazeau was a wonderful choice for our holiday, it was everything we hoped it would be and more. We literally had to bribe our 3 year old into the car to leave which says it all really.

We are so glad you enjoyed your time here and we can assure you that your daughter was an absolute joy, and very helpful feeding the chickens and watering the vegetable garden too. We would love to welcome you back any time.
