Location description from owner

The Limousin region

The Limousin is a largley undiscovered region, marked by its stunning natural beauty and rich history. Its wonderful landscape, forests, famous lakes, ancient chateaux and picturesque villages are only just being searched out.The area is famed for it's 'boeuf rouge' or red Limousin cattle which produce some of the best beef in the world, its many French Oak Orhcards and sweet chestnuts, as well as being a major timber producing area. The capital of the region, Limoges has a wonderful mediaeval 'butchers' quarter, it is famous for it's porcelain and has the mighty river Vienne at it's heart.Limousin is one of the least densely populated regions of France, and is therefore largely unspoilt. Its rolling, wooded landscape is dotted with quaint villages, churches and castles. The area is also a calling point for some of France's major rivers, including the Dordogne, the Vienne, the Creuse and the Cher, and is therefore also well-known for its excellent fishing. Watersport lovers will be spoilt for choice, the gorges, rivers and plentiful lakes mean it is an ideal location.Summer temperatures are reliable and regularly exceed 30 degrees C, and while the winters can be very cold and we do get snow, they are short and then the Spring flowers are a joy to behold. So, whatever the season, there will be something to delight.

Chateauponsac

The local town of Châteauponsac, although small has quite a lot to offer; a local museum (a regular tardis), a lovely old roman church and bridge (which has just been renovated), bar / restaurants, shops and other useful things such as banks, supermarket with 24hr petrol and vet if you bring your dog . You can find Kayaking lessons, swimming and cyling at the local camping grounds, which also offers organised events during July and August and, of course the fetes and vide greniers (car boot sale). The area, with its many hills, lakes and rivers, is superb for outdoor activities such as hiking, cycling, photography, bird watching and painting, it was certainly good enough for the famous artist Fred Yates, who lived locally until just before his recent death. Lac de Saint-Pardoux. is only a 15 minute drive from the cottage and on this huge lake you can enjoy all manner of watersports and horse riding. Limoges, also has much to offer with it's museums and aquarium (which boasts over 300 species of fish), eat at the restaurants, or just do some shopping.Further afield is the immense lake, Vassivier where you can enjoy a dining cruise which takes a good 2 hours, the lake is so big!! The mediaeval town of Chauvigny is well worth a visit to see the Faulkner fly everything from huge storks, all manner of raptors to owls and parrots within the old castle walls. There is just so much to see and do that it can't be listed here but, we can point you in the right directions when you want to venture out.

“As good as ever, no wonder we return time after time”

Reviewed 30 Jul 2013

We have stay at this property on numerous occasions, never to be disappointed. It is a clean, comfortable, well equipped rental, more than adequate for purpose. On this occasion it had been redecorated only weeks before and was, as always, immaculate. Taunya and Brian are the perfect hosts. Nothing is too much trouble. It was too cold to use the pool, but the hot tub was great. This is a wonderful place for a holiday in the true French countryside. Visitors should not expect the 5* luxury of Cannes/Nice.

Thanks very much for this review, we appreciate you taking the time. We look forward to seeing you again soon!

“four days of bliss”

Reviewed 19 Jul 2013

only had time to stay for 4 days. the advert looked really good, as i am a keen angler we decided that this would be perfect for a short break. when we arrived we were greeted by our hosts taunya and Brian. they made us feel part of the family. we had prepared ourselves for the stay but were pleasantly surprised with a most useful welcome pack. no need to bring anything but our personal possessions as everything that is needed was there. idyllic location in the heart of the beautiful limousine, perfect location to walk ride( bikes) fish and anything else. very close to the picturesque town of chateauponsac and very close to lac saint pardoux looking forward to our next break at la Prade. will have to book early though

Thanks for taking the trouble to send in a review, we really appreciate it. So happy that you enjoyed your break. Hope to see you again soon. Taunya.

“Don't book”

Reviewed 16 Jul 2013

Arrived saw old tatty broken garden furniture ,my heart sank ,had a long drive from Calais .stayed 1night that was too long .booked for 8 nights stayed for1 .still no reviews forv2013 .what does that tell you Only advice dont go Also do not book with holiday lettings ,they don't want to know even now July 16th2013. We are from cheshire and expect more ,,we love France's,this gite is horribe

We have been doing holidays for 5 years, with lots of happy guests and this is the first complaint that we have ever had. Please check the reviews on our website, you will find that they are all positive. I am afraid that the old saying is correct, you can't please all the people all of the time.
