Location description from owner

The Limousin region

Limousin is found in the southern centre of France, around the town of Limoges. The landscape is varied with forested hills, open moorlands and traditional farms being the main features - it is essentially a rural region. Much of the region is at an altitude of more than 350 metres, so it can be rather cold or wet.

Limoges (25 mins drive), the capital of the Haute-Vienne is famous for it's porcelain, pottery& enamel. There are restaurants, lovely old buildings, the butchers quarter with it's own tiny church La Chapelle de St. Aurlian, parks, the famous cathedral, markets, aquarium, nightspots, fantastic shopping and museums. Do visit the market and experience a meal in one of the trader's restaurants. There is also a flea market held in the vicinity of the cathedral on the second Sunday of each month. The train station, which was rebuilt after a fire, is well worth a visit. The architecture is magnificent.

Lac Saint Pardoux (15 mins drive) boasts an "inland sea" - a 330 hectare lake with 3 beaches, a marina, watersports facilities and beaches of fine sand. A perfect venue for a day out with the family without having to worry about travelling for miles.

Le Dorat (25 mins drive) with it's magnificent roman church built between the 9th and 12th centuries and fortified in the 15th century. A lovely medieval town with a market on the 13th of each month. There is an English garden, magnificent architecture, cobbled streets and two convents. Here, you can also visit the famous Limoges pottery factory shop.

Bellac (15 mins drive) founded in the middle ages with a 12th century church and many 16th to 18th century houses. It's parks and squares are most attractive and pleasant to sit in watching the hustle and bustle of the shopping streets. The playright Jean Giraudoux was born here and Bellac has opened a museum in his memory. Bellac has two weekly markets on a Wednesday and Saturday morning and a trade fair on the 1st of each month. It is a thriving shopping town with many cultural and sporting events taking place throughout the year. In July the Jean Giraudoux Festival attracts a high standard of theatre, music and dance.

Oradour Sur Glane (30 mins drive) is a must see for everyone at least once in their lives just to witness man's inhumanity towards man. The ruin bears witness to the tragic events of 10th June 1944 when 642 men women and children were massacred by the Nazis.

Montmorillon a must for the scholars amongst you as it is renowned for it's literature. A book lovers paradise. The town spreads out either side of the river Gartempe. There is a lovely restaurant overlooking the river where you can enjoy a leisurely lunch. L'isle Jourdain is a beautiful town with a large market held 20th monthly. The beautiful Vienne river flows through the town under huge viaducts where every Sunday morning you can gasp at the locals bungie jumping from them.

La Souterraine (25 mins drive) is the stopping place on the St. Jacques-de-Compostello pilgrim route. A pretty town with cobbled streets and lovely shops, hypermarkets, cinema and gardens. From here you can take a regular train direct to Paris.

Les Herolles (35 mins drive) has a famous market on the 29th of each month. It is a massive event selling everything you can think of. The people come from miles around, very atmospheric, very french and get there early!!

Panazol is the place for another big market held every Sunday morning. It is just off junction 34 on the A20 just past Limoges.

St. Junien a large market town with the market held every 3rd Saturday. It has lovely quaint cobbled streets for you to explore with specialised shops.

Aubusson the town famous for its tapestries.

Confolens is a beautiful town with the river Vienne dividing it. For two weeks in August there is a world music festival where participants attend from all over the world. A must do if you are here during that time. Nearby there is a velo track for the energetic amongst you.

Chateauponsac

Chateauponsac also known locally as Château Lorraine, is a commune in the Haute-Vienne department in the Limousin region in western France.

Overlooking a meander of the river Gartempe, from the small town character Châteauponsac invites visitors to discover its Romanesque church St.Thyrse, its picturesque historic district with old houses and terraced gardens overlooking the valley.

It houses a famous museum, a campsite, shops and restaurants. There is also a free open-air swimming pool. There is a large supermarket for all your needs and a smaller one for essentials and three boulangeries. You will also find two hairdressers and two tabacs. There is a tourist information bureau, a gym, a town hall, two banks, a post office and a doctor's, dentist's and veterinary surgery. The town also hosts a market in the square on the 22nd of each month.

“Excellent”

Reviewed 1 Jun 2015

We arrived for our first visit to Etang de Planchon on the 23/05/2015 after being greeted at the airport by kiran and Angelo we had a short drive to our accommodation an authentic gite by the side of the lake. A well kept building with all the amenities you could possibly need. A well equipped kitchen spacious accommodation. Comfortable beds, separate toilet and shower room. We opted for a full meal package during our stay and couldn't have wished for better food or hospitality. Kiran and Angelo are amazing people who will go above and beyond to help you with whatever you need.nothing is more important to them than you enjoying your stay with them. The fishing is also excellent 6 new pb in a weeks fishing says it all really for me finishing on a 58lb 6oz mirror. Everything you need is sold on site and kiran and Angelo knowledge of the lake is not to be overlooked. We have really enjoyed our stay here and are looking forward to our return visits.

“Excellent stay, perfect peaceful.getaway in this beautiful gite.”

I really can't fault this accommodation, the log fire on a cold evening kept us toasty, lovely and clean with everything you need for cooking etc, lovely views of the surrounding area, booking again for next may, the owners are happy to help in anyway, and are lovely people, roll on next may.

“Excellent Gite”

Reviewed 25 Apr 2014

Excellent gite with all the indoor and outdoor facilities needed for a great holiday. I stayed with my husband whilst he fished the lake however this would suit families or groups of friends who wanted to fish or just get away in France. The gite itself has all the mod cons needed, including sky, wifi, washing machine, dish washer etc, for a easy comfortable stay whilst maintaining its French charm with an open log fire. There are allot of great walks around the area with various cafes to stop off at on your way for a coffee and rest. Kiran and Ange were great hosts who catered for all our needs including transfers to and from the airport. Overall they were very flexible, friendly and accomodating and were key in setting this gite apart from other places we've stayed. We will definatley be returning again very soon and would recommend this holiday to all.

“Lovely Gite in a wonderful rural area”

Reviewed 21 Apr 2014

Lovely rustic Gite in a rural area not to far away from a the city of Limoge. It is situated on a lovely (fishing) lake. We booked it for 7 days as a part of our fishing week at the lake. We brought our two dogs with us and they where more then welcome. The Gite has all the things you need, a comfy bed, shower and separate toilet. The kitchen had everything you need: cooker/oven, washing machine, dishwasher and microwave (and all the other "usual" appliances". Kiran and Angelo are the most welcoming and friendly people to be with. Nothing is to much and they have the patience of angles.

Thank you for your feedback and I am glad you had a lovely holiday and the dogs enjoyed themselves. We look forward to seeing you all again next year.

“Excellent gite with great facilities and hosts in a beautiful location.”

Reviewed 7 Oct 2012

The gite at Le Planchon offers lovely, authentic French living with hosts who couldn't be any more helpful and a setting which is simply beautiful. The area has all the local facilities required for a great holiday and the gite offers all the mod cons needed whilst keeping its rustic homely charm. If its raining then stay in and watch sky tv, a dvd or read a book infront of the log burner. If its sunny then have a drink in the oustide dining area or go for a walk around the French countryside. The clean, practical accomodation will meet all needs. Kiran and Angelo are excellent hosts and will go over and above what you'd expect, either Kiran with her excellent cooking and choice in books or Angelo with his fire lighting skills and sense of humour. Whether you are a family, couple or partner of a fisherman, with two years of experience with this gite, I recommend this as a place to stay.

“Beautiful area, lovely Gite , very warm welcome”

Reviewed 9 Jul 2012

We received a very warm, friendly welcome from the Kiran, the owner, on arrival. Nothing was too much trouble and she was always on hand with plenty of advice on where to go & what to see, but without being intrusive. The kitchen is really well equipped (far better than most holiday cottages I have stayed in) and the supermarket is only a short distance away with everything you need, so cooking wasn't the chore it normally is on holiday! You really get a taste of rural french life here and this place has the best of both worlds. If you want a peaceful, relaxing holiday it is ideal as the setting is tranquil, but there are plenty of places to visit nearby if you like to go out and about. If you do want to explore, the roads are very quiet, but a car is essential. We would definitely stay here again and hope to return next year.

Hi, Thanks very much for the review, greatly appreciated and it will help other potential clients wishing to book the Gite in the future. Kiran

“Amazing place, wonderful host”

Reviewed 3 Nov 2011

We stayed at this Gite in late Oct, Kiran (the host) was so welcoming and more than accommodating to our needs, we needed both a mid-week and early check in. Also during our stay Kiran was so helpful, on-hand to offer information if needed even meals were available if required. Nothing was too much and we really appreciated it. The Gite itself was lovely, had everything you could need for a short or long stay. Set in the idyllic French countryside, overlooking the lake. It was perfect for a relaxing holiday and we couldn’t have asked for more. The nearby town Chateuponsac, is a lovely quaint place just a short drive away. This really felt like a home from home, a combination of a beautiful setting, lovely Gite, fantastic host and all the amenities you could need. We would definitely recommend this cottage to anyone looking to get away from it all! We’ve already booked in to go again….thanks Kiran!

Thanks very much for the feedback, I'm glad it met your requirements and hopefully see you soon.

“An extremely well equipped, comfortable, gite , in beautiful surroundings”

Reviewed 28 Oct 2011

We spent a most enjoyable and relaxing week at this gite. Anything you might need or want is provided. It is spacious and comfortable. It has a lovely oldy worldy feel with the flagstone floors and beams, but there is every modern convenience available to make your stay easy and comfortable The surrounding grounds with the lake are beautiful. You are made to feel very welcome by the host for whom nothing is too much trouble. I would not hesitate to recommend this cottage unreservedly to anyone thinking of going there.

I am glad you had an enjoyable stay at the Gite. Thank you for your feedback, it is greatly appreciated.
