Location description from owner

The Poitou-Charentes region

The Charente is a beautiful unspoilt area of France. Set in the heart of the Cognac vineyard region it is an excellent location to access many of the local towns and surrounding areas. The landscape is rich and varied with acres of sunflowers and vines. The climate is temperate and comfortable with an average temperature of around 25 but often reaching over 30. We are ideally situated for visiting many of the regional activities of the area. Cognac is a 30 minute drive where you can visit many world famous distilleries. Or if you prefer, the picturesque vineyards of St Emillion are a pleasant hours drive away. Our nearest city is Angouleme inhabited from the year 600 and is the capital of the Charente. It is known as the "City of Festivals" set high above the old city walls with views for miles around. The festivals begin in January with the cartoon/comic strip event, the Musique Metisses in May, the classic car race and rallye, Circuit des Remparts in September and the piano festival, Piano en Valois in October just to mention a few. It is a lively and still very much "French" town with an abundance of excellent bars and restaurants for your pleasure.

Chateauneuf-sur-Charente

Chateauneuf sur Charente is our closest town built in the plains and hills bordering the Charente with 3500 inhabitants. On market days Tuesday, Thursday and Saturdays it is a place where people gather to sit and catch up in the local bars and cafes whilst leisurely shopping. There are two large supermarkets, three banks, chemists, bars, restaurants, doctors and a hospital. In the opposite direction is the town of Barbezieux St Hilaire which is larger than Chateauneuf with more restaurants a larger market and a hospital with an emergency department. Jonzac is just 15 minutes drive away where there is a large leisure complex with indoor and outdoor swimming, gym, solarium and spa. This pretty village has a market on Fridays and there are plenty of bars and restaurants to explore.

“Comfortable accommodation and welcoming hosts”

Reviewed 4 Jun 2013

We stayed in La Petite Maison for 3 nights on a short break from our home in Brittany where we also have a gite,.. so I guess we had an extra perspective on the visit as owners of a holiday property ourselves. The cottage fulfilled expectations and was of a high standard of comfort in terms of furnishings, facilities and equipment, with several thoughtful touches included. The gardens and surroundings were beautifully cared for, and the location peaceful, in a small hamlet just a few kilometres from Chateauneuf sur Charente. Les and Christine have the management of their holiday homes down to a fine art, with an office and presence on site whenever you might need them. I found them to be very helpful, professional and friendly at the same time.

“Outstanding!”

Reviewed 29 May 2012

We had a wonderful holiday. The accommodation was superb and the welcome was warm. Les and Christine did everything they could to ensure we enjoyed our stay without ever getting in the way. Les even rescued my barbecue when I bought lava briquettes instead of charcoal. It's a great region to explore and the accommodation is set in a beautiful little village. The apartment furnishings are frankly a cut above what one expects from rented accommodation and things like WIFI access and SkyTV in the property are superb touches. It was great to be able to access the internet so we could plan trips etc. I honestly don't think I could have spent my money any better!
