Description from owner

Description

Kerneatret le Petit is a 2 bedroom cottage situated on the banks of the river Aulne which forms part of the Nantes-Brest canal. It is perfect for walking, cycling, fishing, bird-watching or exploring the beautiful Breton countryside and beaches.

Stroll down the river and you may spot deer, otters, kingfisher and woodpeckers. The cottage has many original features, including oak beams and wood burning stove. Ideal for all year round holidays. The above ground pool is ideal for the kids to play in and for cooling off after hot summer days.

"The house suited us and our young children very well. The kids loved the splash pool and being able to wander up the lane blackberrying. It feels very secluded, yet is just next to a beautiful canal where we spotted kingfishers, herons, lots of frogs and crickets." - August 2014.

Located in a tranquil setting with easy access to the delightful market town of Chateauneuf-du-Faou with its many shops, bars and restaurants.

Location description from owner

The Brittany region

Châteauneuf-du-Faou is in Finistère, Brittany in the North West corner of France. The Nantes-Brest canal and the Hyeres and Aulne rivers provide a huge amount of entertainment for visitors. There is an indoor swimming pool at the Penn ar Pont leisure centre where you can also hire a range of bikes and boats, i.e. kayaks, canoes, pedaloes or go on the passenger boat up the river.

Music Festivals - there are frequent music festivals throughout the summer to enjoy, as well as a sensational Jazz Festival which occurs on the banks of the River Aulne, a truly magical setting. The Les Vieilles Charrues Festival in Carhaix in July is a must for contemporary music lovers too. The Bout du Monde festival in Crozon in early August also attracts top names.

Golf - there are a number of excellent golf courses in Finistere, the nearest ones situated at Carhaix 15 miles, Brest 40 miles and Golf de Cornouaille at Foret Fouesnant, near Quimper.

Chateauneuf du Faou

Finistere is loved for its mild climate, unspoilt beaches, its traditional Breton culture and breath taking scenery, making it an ideal holiday destination for families and experienced travellers alike.

Day Trips - Château de Trévarez which overlooks Châteauneuf-du-Faou. Oceanopolis in Brest, rated one of the best aquaria in the world, is a great family day out 50 minutes away. Nature lovers staying in Châteauneuf-du-Faou are spoilt for choice for day trips. The magnificently natural Ile d'Ouessant, forms part of the Armorique Nature Reserve which encompasses many of the smaller islands off the Finistere coast.

The interior of Finistere also claims some beautiful locations. There are many circular walks in the area around Châteauneuf-du-Faou, during which you will almost certainly stumble across one of the amazing pre-historic sites which adorn the region. The medieval town of Quimper has ancient buildings, including its imposing cathedral, modern shops and a variety of art galleries and museums.

Beaches - if you head west to the beaches of the Baie de Douarnenez, from Crozon round to Douarnenez, or south to Benodet, Beg Meil, Concarneau or Pont l'Abbe, there is plenty on offer to keep you entertained. The nearest is Pentrez Plage with a 2.5 kilometre flat sandy beach plus shops and cafes. The Sunday Times ranked Pentrez Plage in their top 20 beach holidays in Europe: “If it's rock pools, foaming surf and acres of white sand you ache for, then point yourself towards Brittany. One of the prize spots is Pentrez Plage, on the huge, sweeping Baie de Douarnenez — the kind of beach where you can kick footballs, hunt for crabs and fly kites. Backed by high cliffs pockmarked with caves, Pentrez has safe shallows for tots, as well as high-adrenaline sports such as sand-yachting and speed-sailing.” We recommend eating at the creperie at St Come, just 800 metres from the beach, where there are over 580 (!) varieties of galette to choose from.

“If you love walking, cycling or simply being outside in beautiful countryside, you couldn't ask for a better location!”

Reviewed 25 Jun 2014

Fabulous weather during our stay at the end of May meant we could enjoy everything this lovely gite has to offer right on its doorstep. With no near neighbours (there was no one in Le Grand, attached to Le Petit, during our stay) sitting amidst the fields bordering the River Aulne, the position was one of the most tranquil settings you could ask for. Just a few steps takes you to the banks of the River Aulne, a wide and slow flowing river with a fabulous cycle path running along side giving the most amazing views. A cycle ride of about 10 minutes takes you to the port of Chateau Neuf de Faou and a pizzeria, so very easy for an evening out. The gite was exceptionally clean and tastefully furnished/decorated, everything worked and the beds were comfy! The owner was very communicative via email and I felt confident in my booking at every stage. The welcome pack was generous and included essentials such as milk, bread, butter, jam and juice and a very welcome bottle of red wine - much appreciated at the end of a long journey! If you're looking for somewhere to truly feel away from the madness of everyday life, I don't think you could go far wrong staying here! The stairs are open tread bare wood and are quite steep. As such, I don't think I'd recommend this gite to someone with with mobility issues.
