Location description from owner
The Poitou-Charentes region
The Charente is one of four departments making up the Poitou-Charente region, together with Charente-Maritime, Deux-Sèvres and Vienne. Being close to the border of the Dordogn and Haute Vienne, each area has distinctive features but all have a generous share of river. The Charente is also the place to visit if you’re after a slice of traditional French rural life – here age-old traditions are still strong and the Charentais pace of life is decidedly gentle. In town squares flat-capped old men play boules (the French equivalent of bowls) and market days are not just for shopping but also for lingering over a glass or two of wine with friends. We are surrounded by countryside varying from gently rolling fields covered in sunflowers in summer to vineyards and forests, rivers, hills and gorges, and have the Lakes of Haute Charente on our doorstep. The French traditionally consider the Charentais as somewhat laid back and a bit zany, yet generally quite happy with their peaceful lot!The region has one of the richest heritages of Romanesque art and chateaux not to menion its packed programme of top quality summer festivals and markets. There are many ‘must see’ monuments and buildings including Angoulême’s Cathedral St Pierre. Cognac the home of 'The Liqour of the Gods’ is only an hour away, as is Limoges and its famous porcelain. The beautiful rolling countryside and lakes of the high Charente are perfect for all manor of activities including walking, cycling, mountain biking, riding, golfing, swimming, sailing, canoeing, birdwatching, golfing, go karting, ropes courses, bowling and even just lazing by the pool. You'll find as much (or as little) as you could wish to do within a short drive.
Montemboeuf is a quiet village but with all the necessary amenities and has a summer fete, a bric a brac and the wonderful imprevu arts and music festival in September. The imposing chateau at La Rochefoucauld provides is an excellent day out. The top floor houses an abundance of medieval costumes, all availble for the kids to dress up in. They love it! The town also provides many shops, bars and restaurants for lunches or evenings out.One of the great pleasures of a holiday in France is being able to browse at the local markets. Here you will find quality fruit and vegetables, also meat, bread and cheese. Many of the local towns have markets with a particularly well known one on a Wednesday morning at Piegut, just over the border in the Dordogne, only 30 minutes away. Take time out and sit with a pineau and watching the world go by!The Lacs de Haute Charente are the largest inland lakes in the region and were formed to manage the water-flow into the Charente River from the surrounding countryside as well as to provide water for a very thirsty Angouleme! Here at these lakes, you can indulge in many water sports which we list below. Alternatively you can just swim or relax and sunbathe on the sandy beaches and find a beach bar or restaurant for lunch. The Base Nautique at La Guerlie beach is 2 km or just a mile from La Croix Spa on Lac Lavaud. Here, on the huge Lacs de Haute Charente in the Poitou-Charentes, you can access a variety of watersports: sailing - in dingies or catamarans, canoeing, windsurfing for which tuition is also available. Pedaloes are also available and the sandy beaches contain enclosed swimming areas for safe children's' swimming. The ever popular Velo Rail is situated at nearby Roumaziers. This is a wonderful day out for kids and adults of all ages and fitnesses. The Railroad Charente-Limousine enables you to discover the landscapesthe Charente at your own pace by an fantastic Rail-bike on an old railway line. Again you can take a picnic to have at the end of the track before you turn around to come home.Montbron, which is only 15 minutes away is a base for canoeing down the Tardoir. You can make the trip as long or as short as you wish. A wonderful way to float by the beautiful Charentaise countryside, and the children will love going down the canoe shoots.Kayaking at Exideuil. There is river kayaking at Exideuil which comes highly recommended by our guests. The course takes you through the valley of the river Vienne. You will pass beautiful old mills and shoot small rapids. Guests of registered tourist accommodation receive discount vouchers for this activity. There is a great 10 pin bowling alley around 25 minutes drive in the pretty village of Bussieres Baddiel. Great fun for all the family.Angouleme is a walled city built around the magnificent Cathedral St Pierre. After strolling around the ramparts, you can sit and enjoy a ‘plat du jour’ at one of the many restaurants in the squares or winding mediaeval streets. As the commercial and cultural capital of the Charente it offers a buzzing cultural calendar and is a festival venue for comic strips, rock and world music, vintage cars, toys and games.Spend a day in Cognac with its mild ocean climate and southern sun and take a tour around one of the many distilleries. Here you will encounter cellars full of ageing cognacs and taste some of the exceptional matured amber that is Cognac, described by Victor Hugo as ‘The Liqour of the Gods’.Brantome... Known as "the Venice of the Perigord" this charming medieval town is built on an island on the river Dronne. Its a stunning town with pretty shops and great little restaurants. Remeber to take some bread to feed the hundreds of ducks on the river! You can even take a pleasure boat cruise around the town and down the river, or for the more energetic hire a canoe; its great fun attempting the weirs! Visit the vibrant Friday morning market, again stacked with local products, arts and crafts. For more extreme fun there is a go karting track only 15 minutes away at La Rochefoucauld or for the more daring the Circuit du Perigord is just 30mins away. This is one of the regions major international karting circuits that host competitions for enthusiasts from all over Europe. With 2 circuits, the main track boasts 1078m of track and offers two powers of Karts, whilst the under 14's can try their hand at karting on the smaller track. Also for kids there is the Nautilus water park at Angouleme. A giant water park with flumes that go on for ever, water slides, wave machines and just very very large pools and lakes.Website: http://www.agglo-angouleme.fr/index-module-orki-page-view-id-50.htmlSlightly further afield at Poitiers (90 minutes) is Futuroscope. Treat yourself to the new attractions, if you dare! Packed with thrills, images in giant-screen format, extraordinary encounters, mind-blowing shows, role-playing, and more.

- Very Good
“Perfect place for a break in the High Charante”
Everything we wanted. Comfortable, clean, and everything working. Good area with plenty of walking, cycling, sightseeing, local markets and restaurants. Supplies available in local village, with a great little bar, only 10 minutes walk. Owned by pleasant English couple who were on hand for help and advice when requested. Lots of maps and guides, English TV and radio, free internet connection. Sunny, sheltered and private garden with nice little pool for staying cool. Plenty of room for children to safely play. Ideal for us.
“Sun & wine far from the madding crowd”
Lovely relaxing, rural location with great on site ammenties and nearby villages and towns that are not on the usual tourist trail (though Bradd Pitt is rumoured to have stayed nearby). Great walks and cycle rides and lots of local activities (pedal cart railway, assault course, sailing, markets, chateau's and good food, you name it if the fancy takes you) or just sun by the pool. Proper little local village within walking distance with shops, boulangerie, resteraunt and bar. Had a wonderful time. Will go back.
