The Chania Prefecture region

Chania - Old Town and Modern CityChania can first be divided into the Old Town and the modern City. The old town is contained to East and West by largely intact Venetian city walls and to the South by Venizelou Street which runs by the cruciform Municipal Market building. The Old Town can be further usefully divided into several areas:• the old centre is Kastelli hill, Chania's original citadel or acropolis, inhabited since Neolithic times and the preferred home of the Venetian and Turkish elite; it retains most of its Venetian buildings, is the most peaceful area of Chania, and boasts the city's most extensive archeological site of Minoan remains. La Maison Ottomane is located here.• to the East of Kastelli hill is Splanzia, Chania's more bohemian region, which has retained a very local character; 1821 Square, more commonly known as Splanzia Square, is leafy and idyllic and boasts excellent cafes (with wifi) and restaurants serving local food to locals and visitors; Splanzia's main thoroughfare, Daskalogianni Street, has a chemist, estate agents, galleries, car rentals, groceries, a bakery, etc, etc. Akti Enoseos, the harbour front bordering Splanzia to its North, has several good seafood restaurants as well as lively nightlife in a number of bars and cafes; on Saturday a street market selling local produce (fruit and veg, honeys, cheeses, etc) takes place on Minoos Street to the East of Splanzia.• to the West of Kastelli Hill is the Old Harbour, a highly picturesque place to stroll or stop for a drink or meal, and fanning out to its North and West are the Topanas quarter and, within it, the old Jewish District; these areas are characterised by winding alleys and Venetian archiecture and are good for walking; this is the most touristically developed part of Chania.• between Kastelli, Splanzia and Topanas, right in the centre of the Old Town, is a peaceful labyrinth of alleys bordered by Chrysanthou and Daskalogianni Streets to West and East; a good area to explore and home to several good restaurants; look out for Daliani Street with a variety of mezze restaurants (one or two very good), hip jeweller and handbag shops, and plenty of bars and cafes; to the North side is the Municipal Market, modelled on that of Marseille and built in 1913 - a mixture of tourist outlets and good grocers butchers, fishmongers, bakeries and cheese shops catering to locals - it also contains several excellent little restaurants. The New Town, everything outside the Old Town, is as modern Greek cities are: noisy and chaotic but with its own charm discernable under the surface. Of note is Nea Chora (New Place) to the West of the Old Town, the location of the Town Beach. The beach has fine sand and is good, though better beaches are accessible by car in 20-30 minutes, and is lined with several good fish restaurants - a pleasant place for a swim and a good lunch. Outside Chania but very much part of its identity are the graves of the statesman Eleftherios Venizelos and his son Sophocles. They are located on a hill overlooking Chania from the West and the local cafe/bar is a magical location to watch the sun set over the city.

“Peaceful luxury f”

Reviewed 6 Apr 2014

La Maison Ottomaine is a small boutique type hotel in a quiet location which is nevertheless right in the centre of old Chania and a short walk from the harbour. The hotel consists of a converted period house with three double rooms or suites around a courtyard where breakfast is served. The suite I stayed in consisted of 2 rooms, beautifully furnished and decorated. The overall theme is one of historic Constantinople with a spacious and comfortable sitting room and an equivalently sized bedroom. There is air con throughout and the attention to detail is such that you really feel a pampered but understated sense of luxury. Breakfast is served in the Courtyard and there is a huge range available including local fresh produce, cheeses, meats etc. Again the emphasis is on quality in terms of both the content and the presentation. The owner Andreas is a charming and welcoming host and you feel that he has put his heart and soul into the creation of this hotel. Andreas & Alexandra, the manager, were both extremely helpful and ready to help in any way when it came it to making the most of my visit to Chania. If you are looking for a top quality, luxury B&B, close to the harbour but at the same time in a quiet location, I would certainly recommend this place.

“A plunge to luxury”

I had an excellent stay in the Constantinople suite. Luxury is abundant, sleep was better than home, and the company of cosmopolitan Andreas (the owner) warped the whole thing to a memorable stay
