Description from owner

Enjoy superb spacious accommodation and fantastic facilities for a totally relaxing break. Imagine lazing by the 10x5 private heated swimming pool or enjoying a glass of wine and an al fresco meal on one of the 3 terraces. Take an evening stroll by the lake or sit under the shade of the fig trees. An excellent choice for families, with facilities for all ages. Children are especially well catered for. Spread over 3 floors, the house is light and airy with large bedrooms and wonderfully furnished communal areas, with comfy sofas and homely touches. Chanteloube is not isolated but it is in a peaceful area with easy access to the local town of Vergt and only 15k from Perigueux a beautiful city with cobbled streets and a wonderful Cathedral.

The Dordogne region

The Dordogne is the third largest department in France. It is split into 4 areas, Perigord Noir (black), Blanc (White), Vert (green) and Pourpre (purple). Perigord Blanc is central, it is so called because of the white limestone within the are. Perigueux is its capital, founded by the Romans many years ago. Perigord Vert stretches north and takes its name from the luscious green valleys, the area is hilly with many streams and rivers. Perigord Noir is famous for its prehistoric history and is centred round Sarlat with its wonderful 17th century buildings and narrow streets. The Vezere river flows through villages such as Sergeac and Les Eyzies until it merges with the Dordogne river beyond Le Bugue. The Dordogne then continues through Beynac, Domme and La Roque Gageac where over its banks tower cliffs where you will find houses built into the rock face. Perigord Poupre denotes the grapes which are grown along the banks of the Dordogne throughout this area. Here you will also find Bastide towns, such as Eymet, Monpazier and Domme, whose history are associated with the 100 year and religious wars.

The Dordogne has more chateaux and castles than anywhere in France.. Many were built during the 100 years war, some by the French some by the English. You will also find prehistoric cave paintings at places like Lascaux and Les Eyzies-de-Tayac.

The climate is temperate and is generally governed by the Atlantic, it brings in some rain which makes this area greener than the south but the sun is warmer than the north so spring starts earlier and it stays warmer well into autumn. Summers can be hot with temperatures at times reaching over 30°c.

Tthere are many activities available for all ages in the local area. Brochures are available at the house with info on things to do, or you can visit the local tourist information office in Vergt.

Sports enthusiasts and those of an energetic nature are well catered for with swimming, walking, tennis, rugby (there is a team in Perigueux and the local team at Vergt is well worth seeking out if you want to watch a good game) golf, canoeing, fishing (you will need a license which can be purchased in Vergt at the tabac), hot air ballooning, climbing, go-karting, paint balling, cycling, horse riding and various water sports. These are all within easy access of the house.

There is an abundance of wildlife. Keep an eye out for buzzards, kingfishers, hoopoes, herons, woodpeckers and jays amongst others. At certain times of the year, storks migrate north and the house is below their flight path. It is an amazing sight to behold, hundreds of them darken the sky and you can hear the flapping of their wings for miles. You may also be lucky enough to see deer, red squirrels, wild boar and pine martens whilst on your travels.

For those of you that savour the finer things in life, a trip to a local vineyard is a must. Take a tour round a chateau and discover how they grow and harvest the grapes, learn about the process of fermenting and storing and then best of all you get to sample some of the excellent wines. Some local wines to look out for are, Pecharmant, Saussignac and Montbazillac. One of the most beautiful towns where there are many wine producers is St Emilion, with its honey coloured buildings and wonderful terracotta roofs.

Gastronomes will delight in dishes such as Magret de Canard (duck), foie gras, truffles, mushrooms, walnuts, fish and strawberries, which are specialities of the region. In nearly all restaurants you will see duck in various forms on the menu.

Exploring the region on foot, by car or river is an adventure in itself. Some of the places not to be missed are Sarlat, St Emilion, Limoges, Hauteforte, Gourdon, Rocamadour, Bordeaux and Angouleme as well as those already mentioned. The house is only 2 hours from the coast, which is a great day out for all the family.

There are markets in the area every day of the week to whet the appetites of the shopaholics amongst you. Wonderful fresh local produce, intriguing artifacts and antiques from by-gone days and the weirdest fashions you ever did see. Check out the cheeses, fresh vegetables, meat and fish.

Eating out is an experience. The local pizza restaurant in Vergt is a favourite for many of our guests, as is L’Accroche Coeur in Perigueux (details of both are at the house) two very different places to eat but great food. There are however many places to try and enjoy. The Café de Place in Perigueux, is a great meeting place for young French students and you can partake in a drink and get a good meal and the Truffe D'Or at St Mayme de Pereyol, which is great value. For English and French alike The Star Inn is a must visit, run by Bev and Mike it is an Irish Pub with a great atmosphere. The Friday night quiz is good light entertainment. It is frequented by French as well as English clientele and is really friendly.

“Brilliant place for all ages”

Reviewed 27 Aug 2012

Stayed as part of group of 11 with 5 teenagers! Worked out brilliantly as there was plenty for them all to do and they had their own space downstairs away from us. We loved the outside eating area and spent many nights there enjoying good food and wine. Really well equipped house with lovely pool area plus indoor entertainment e.g. table tennis and darts! Would definitely recommend to all ages for a relaxing holiday.

Thank you for your very positiive comments, we try to cater for all ages and it is nice to know we are on the right track. The Dordogne is a wondedful area to visit and it is nice to share our home, so that others can experience this lovely region of France. We hope to see you again.

“Really did have it all!”

Reviewed 14 Aug 2012

We recently traveled as 3 families to the property and thoroughly enjoyed our week. The property was so well equipped, i think it is almost impossible to think of anything it didn't have! My only point would be the quality of the bed we slept on, the mattress was probably overdue for a change as was quite uncomfortable. Everything else was wonderful.

Thank you for your kind comments, all have been duly noted, as we endeavour to keep up our standards. We hope to see you again.

“Absolutely fantastic again !!”

Reviewed 4 Nov 2011

After a fantastic 3 generation family holiday 2 years ago , we decided to return and share this wonderful place with a group of close friends. We really enjoyed relaxing around the swimming pool , although one of our party preferred to be at the lake with his fishing rod !! It was great to spend evenings together eating , drinking and playing cards on the front terrace. The men enjoyed the challenge of table tennis and darts. When we managed to drag ourselves away from Chanteloube , we were so impressed by the surrounding scenery and countryside. There are so many interesting and exciting places to visit , and were amazed with the amount of information , maps and books available in the house. Everyone had a superb relaxing break in this extremely comfortable and well equipped house. Thank you , we will definitely be back !!

Thank you so much for your comments about Chanteloube. We like to present a home from home atmosphere and have equipped the house with everything we would expect if we booked a holiday. Your return visit speaks volumes and we hope to see you again.

“An absolutely fantastic house.”

It was my first visit to Chanteloube and I was not disappointed. Such a relaxing place to stay. Very clean, very spacious and the owners have provided everything needed, whatever the weather. We were very lucky to have good weather for most of our stay so were able to relax around the pool. So with excellent accommodation, good weather, good food and great company, my holiday was fantastic. Hope to come back again! Would definitely recommend it.

Thank you for your lovely review. We try to make the place a home from home for all our guests and hope this helps provide them with a holiday to remember.

“Fabulous property”

Fantastic house, beautifully presented and really well equipped. The owners have thought of everything which was great when we had a baby & 2 young kids with us. Just wish we could have stayed longer! No hesitation in recommending it to others.

Thank you for your generous review. We do try to think of everything we would want from a holiday, from comfort to amenities. To us it's a home from home and we want our guests to feel that way too, with the benefit of being on holiday.

“An amazing house in a lovely unspoilt area, with so much to see and do.”

Reviewed 13 Aug 2011

This was our second holiday in France with extended family - 12 in total the youngest 9 and the eldest 73. We thought last years house was lovely but Chanteloube exceeded it. The house was so well equipped and comfortable; the owners really have thought of everything. There is something for everyone games to play, a lake to fish in and most importantly the swimming pool, in which many hours were spent by all of us playing volleyball or just having fun. In fact there was so much to do at the house we could only get the kids to go out sight seeing every other day. We also enjoyed the terrace with it's long table, we ate every meal outside. Places we visited Perigueux, Bergerac and Brantome where we went kayaking (which was really good fun and inexpensive). We will definitely return as there is so much of the area that we didn't have chance to visit.

Thank you very much for your glowing review, we try our best to provide everything that an extended family or group of friends would want from a holiday. I am so pleased you all enjoyed your time at the house, it's a pleaseure to be able to share such a lovely place with others. I noticed you gave us 4 stars for directions to the property instead of 5, is there any way in which we could improve this? We take all comments and suggestions seriously and if we can improve our services the better for future guests. Once again thank you for your kind comments.

“Another great holiday at Chanteloube - no wonder we keep coming back!”

This house has everything you could want for a relaxing and fun holiday break. We stayed one year with our whole family, thirteen of us and there was something for all ages at the house. The children loved the garden, play area and games room and the gorgeous pool was fun and relaxing for all of us. Another time we stayed with a smaller group of friends and found the house ideally situated to explore the beautiful area of the Dordogne. There are lots of towns and villages to visit., restaurants to try out and fishing and canoeing in nearby rivers. We can't wait for another return visit. Congratulations on getting everything right!!!!

Thank you, it's nice to know others appreciate our home as much as we do.
