Location description from owner

The Occitanie region

We can offer you more than a glimpse of French culture in this completely unspoilt region of the south of France. Not many roam in the hills around our holiday cottage. A network of tracks and quiet roads lead from the village through historic towns and villages; cycling for softies and extreme off-road all accommodated. The mountain cols also provide for those who prefer something a bit more challenging. We are cycling friendly and have loads of secure storage, maps and 2 mountain bikes to lend and can help plan routes. Further bike hire locally.
The GR7 leads from our back door to Spain, though you may prefer a circular route that brings you back in time for a long, lazy lunch on your sundrenched terrace. Lac Montbel (5km) is a site exceptionnel of 570 hectares and is a beautiful backdrop for swimming, water sports, bird watching, etc.
Our holiday cottage is deep in the land of the Cathars – ruined chateaux stand on rocky outcrops, testament to its troubled past. Montsegur, one of the most famous symbols of the Cathar resistance is 20mins from the house. Puivert, Mirepoix, Fanjeaux, Bram and of course, Carcassonne are all close by. The cobbled streets of the restored medieval city of Carcassonne offer a poignant insight into what life must have been like, lived among the ramparts and besieged by the Crusaders.
There is ample opportunity to sample the sun-drenched flavours of the Languedoc - at our B&B and local restaurants and markets; Mirepoix (14km) with its magnificent medieval couverts hosts a large, lively market every Monday and is a must-see for its range of fresh foods, cheeses, honey and hams, as well as handmade crafts. Night markets are held in nearby Leran, Puivert and Mirepoix during the summer.

One third of the Aude is devoted to growing wines. It includes the AOC areas of Fitou, Corbiere and Malpere, and the region’s own sparkling wine, Blanquette de Limoux – its AOC classification dates from 1938. There are a number of domaines within easy driving of the house, we can arrange tours if you wish.

Other activities close by include horse riding, karting, tennis, white water rafting and canoeing - we are happy to assist. For skiing, Les Mont D'Olmes in the stunning Massif de Tabe region of the Pyreneess is around 40mins.

Chalabre

The Languedoc enjoys exceptionally good summers, baking hot in June, July and August, the warm temperatures lasting long into the evening. In Spring the fields behind the house are filled with wild flowers, tables and chairs start appearing in the squares and the first bounty of the hedgerows appears. Autumn is usually mild and sunny, we are still having supper on the terrace towards the end of September and lunch in the square in November. A lovely season to explore the region, avoiding the summer crowds - lower prices too.

There is a packed programme of festivals throughout the year that celebrate the region's rich culture and history. Weekends of jazz, folk and the summer long classical extravaganza in Carcassonne; medieval towns and villages celebrate traditional crafts and produce of the terroir throughout the year, most events are free. Our village is en fete, the last weekend in August when trestle tables are set beneath the plane trees and you are invited to a meal en famille and a weekend of music and dancing.

Activities are not confined to the summer, the region is lively throughout the winter and mild compared to the UK, lunch on the square is not unusual in November and February. The Mardi Gras in Limoux gives you music and dancing every weekend from January - March. Excellent value downhill skiing 45km; cross-country 50km.
