Location description from owner

The Tuscany region

The landscapes south and east of Siena are among the most classic and beautiful in the Tuscany region. Undulating green hills capped by medieval, tile-roofed towns and punctuated by cypresses, churches and stone farmhouses – it’s as idyllic as it looks in the photos. And in the towns you’ll find some wonderful treasures, from Romanesque churches to wine cellars, from Etruscan museums to thermal spring-fed pools.

Cetona

Cetona is a beautifully preserved medieval hilltop town, strategically situated midway between Rome and Florence. It has fine views of Monte Cetona, is surrounded by pretty hills planted with cypresses and pine trees, and has a typically medieval, circular plan centred on the crest of a hill.

Recognised as one of the most beautiful medieval towns of Tuscany, Cetona has everything you need: restaurants, cafes, markets, grocery stores, interesting shops, and it's all on your doorstep. The tourist office is in the central square (the piazza) and offers maps of local hikes plus many suggestions of what the area offers.

Although a vacation in Cetona typically means rest and tranquillity in a picturesque landscape, in the last few decades the area has become fashionable for all kinds of tastes: culture, vineyards, thermal baths, footpaths, monasteries, sports, excellent food, cafeterias, and numerous festivals.

- Art lovers
Only a short drive away, art lovers will find some of the most exceptional gallery and museums in the world. In the nearby towns of Chiusi, Montepulciano, Pienza, Cortona, Perugia, Arezzo, Orvieto and Siena, history has left treasures from the time of Etruscans to the Renaissance. And don't forget that from Cetona you can easily reach Florence and Rome, by motorway, in an hour or so.

- Vineyards
The region of Cetona offers the vineyards of Montepulciano and Montalcino (see www.stradavinonobile.it/index.uk.php).

- Thermal baths
About 15km away is San Casciano dei Bagni which has one of the best spas in the area, offering a variety of beauty treatments and thermal pools. Similarly, Chianciano, which is much larger, is also famous for its therapeutic waters.

- Footpaths
Hikers, riders, biciclists and nature lovers will find footpaths and country roads that wind through hillsides and vineyards where they will discover hidden corners and breathtaking views.

- Monastery (Convento San Francesco)
A few km away is a unique monastery with a world class restaurant and a fascinating history going back to St Francis of Assisi.

- Sports
If it’s sports you are after, there are tennis courts adjacent to the complex, plus a roller skating ring. About 12 km away, toward Chianciano, there is a bowling arcade and a multiplex cinema.

- Food
There are several excellent restaurants in the centre of Cetona. From the simple delights of a freshly made pizza, to the full Tuscan gastonomic experience - you will not be disappointed.

- Cafeterias
Sipping a cappuccino in the sun in one of the many traditional cafes, whilst watching the towns folk strutting by, is an experience in itself.

- Life in the piazza
The piazza is the central focal point of Cetona, offering many boutique shops, cafes, banks, etc. It has a lively nightlife, and often features markets and other local festivals.

“Excellent, centrally located apartment in a charming village”

Reviewed 30 Aug 2015

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay in Cetona and, given half a chance, would go back tomorrow! We booked the apartment for two weeks with my husband and I spending the first week on our own, and our two sons and one girlfriend joined us for the second week. The apartment was more spacious than it appears in the photo's, and the second bathroom was a pleasant surprise as I seem to have missed that in the description. The bedrooms and balcony have incredible views and like other guests, we spent a lot of our time on the balcony enjoying the scenery. Our youngest son slept on the campbed which had been set up in the upstairs room but as there were no curtains we moved this to the living-room. It was not a problem as he can sleep almost anywhere, but is something to consider if you are planning a stay with five people. Guido and Lucia welcomed us and helped us through all the teething problems of holiday accomodation. They speak excellent English and responded quickly and sympathetically to our pleas for help such as, where to find the code to activate the wi-fi. Lucia also gave us a few tips about places or events worth seeing, and for more ideas there is a basket of information in the apartment. Cetona is a lovely village. We rounded most evenings off with an ice-cream on the piazza, watching the children playing in the relative cool of the evening. The residents and shop owners are very friendly and pleasantly surprised if you make the effort to speak a little Italian. The supermarket provided us with all our shopping and the Jamie Oliver Italy book in the apartment gave us ideas about what to cook. Although there is a bus service it is not very regular so if you are planning to tour the area a car is advisable. The apartment has a covered parking area which means that the car doesn't get too hot sitting in the sun. All in all we had a wonderful holiday!

“Wonderful apartment. Real feel of Italy with the advantages everything you need.”

Reviewed 9 Oct 2012

My husband, daughter (28) and myself had a lovely week in this apartment. It is a modern apartment yet with the real feel of Italy with high ceilings, shuttered windows and beautiful tiled floors. The views are the best of anywhere we have ever stayed. Cetona is lovely, a 5 minute walk in to the centre and we found the nearby Bistro provided reasonable tasty food. Cetona is a small pretty village in the amazing Tuscan countryside but with the advantage that the A1 is a 10 minute drive away from where we visited most of Southern Tuscany. The tolls are small for short distances within Tuscany and it is so quick to get around on the A1 - compared to the smaller mountain roads. We have already recommended the apartment to our friends.

“Wonderful apartment in a stunning setting.”

Reviewed 20 Aug 2012

Loved the apartment, especially the swimming pool. Friendly, and helpful caretakers helped make us feel at home. Cetona is a gem of a place and the apartment is ideally situated-nice and quiet but within easy distance to wander down to the piazza for an icecream, coffee or wonderful meal. Highly recommend it.

“Wonderful apartment, fantastic views in and interesting region”

Reviewed 23 Sep 2011

We really did love the apartment. It was beyond our expectations. Nice, clean with good space. The views from the balcony and the bedrooms is just a summary of the Tuscan landscape. It´s amazing to see Monte Subario and other mountains about 100 km away. With this apartment is it necessary with a car. And with the heat during our visit did we really appreciate the possibility to put the car in a garage. Cetona is a nice little village and a very good starting point for exploring southern Tuscany, Umbria and Lazio.

“Great apartment and location to explore this area of Tuscany”

Reviewed 21 Sep 2011

If Cetona's good enough for Valentino - then we figured it's good enough for us! A small town that's not overun by tourists. - but still has everything you'd need. It was great to see the locals in the piazza of a summer evening, chatting in groups, playing cards, strolling, eating icecream. The apartment was lovely with fantastic views, nice swimming pool and grounds to relax at the end of a day. The "caretakers" were helpful and friendly. We do suggest that you have a supply of easy hand-washable clothes as there is no washing machine and time is better spent enjoying the area, than in another town at the public laundry. There is also no wifi or telephone, so you need to have your own access if you want to stay in touch. Or maybe it's better to stay away from technology for a while and soak in the surrounds instead.T

“Very good value for the money”

We were pleasantly surprised by the apartment, it was even better than we thought. Although the area around the apartment was very nice and well maintained. The village of Cetona was a little gem, with small streets, stone houses perched on a small hilltop. There was even the toys in the apartment tll our children 4 to 6 years old. “Truely wonderful”

Reviewed 11 Aug 2011

As we are coming to the end of our stay we really do not want to leave. The apartment is well equipped and the views are breathtaking. The apartment is A1 and close to Chiusi train station, A car would be advisable, we managed to do trips to Siena, Florence, Pisa, as well as the surrounding areas. My husband and son done a train trip to Rome by train and it was very reasonalby priced. As for places to eat its hard to choose the best, Bistrot has a wide selection of pizzas, pastas as well as burgers, chicken and chips, osteria Merlo and Vecchio both do outstanding food, and Trattoria del Contadino is a Tuscan experience to enjoy again with spectacular views. If you like the beach but dont want to travel the 2+ hours then Lago Tresmino is a good alternative, we went to 'Castiglione del Lago on a Wednesday (market day) in the morning then spend the afternoon swimming in the lake. The only downside is we have to return back to the UK and leave this wonderful place behind. But we do hope to return again in a few years. Thanks to the owners for giving us the opportunity to spend our time in such a picturesque base.
