The Syrah is predisposed to sleep up to six guests (double bed + two comfortable double sofa-beds), but a baby cot/crib is available if needed. While the apartment retains the charm of yesteryear, it has been updated to include wifi internet, sat tv and other modern conveniences.
The chateau is centrally located within the region in the small medieval wine-producing village of Cesseras. The village has a bar-café with outdoor tables under the plane trees of the main square, the surprisingly large and well-maintained 13tth-century, Gothic church of St. Germaine, miedieval Chateau Cesseras, post office and small grocery store where you can pre-order fresh baguettes, brioches & croissants for a leisurely breakfast before setting out on a day of exploration.
The immediate vicinity of the chateau includes the market town of Olonzac (capital of the Minervois wine region) where you can find a wide variety of shops, bars, cafés and almost all amenities and services; Homps along the world-famous and tree-lined Canal du Midi (walking, biking & boat tours); Lac de Jourres (swimming, wind-surfing & boating); and the historic 12th-century Cathar stronghold perched high in the stunning Cesse River gorges directly behind our village . . . all within a 5-10 minute drive from Chateau Marcel.
We are conveniently near the border of the Hérault & Aude Departements and approximately equidistant (30-45 min.) from the major cities of Narbonne, Carcassonne & Béziers with Toulouse and Montpellier just a short hop further afield. Even the Pyrénées (visible on a clear day), Spanish border and duty-free shopping of the tiny country of Andorra at only an hour and a half by car make for an easy day trip.
For those who are unfamiliar with Languedoc, it must be said that the sunny climate - about 300 days of sunshine per year - together with its natural beauty and rich history make for a truly unforgettable holiday. It has something to offer everyone, from sandy, sun-drenched Mediterranean beaches to cool forests and mountain streams of the Montagne Noir; from city shopping to winetasting tours in the many 'caves' scattered throughout the vineyards; from visiting museums and cathedrals to walking the ramparts and towers of Cathar forts and castles; from fine dining in gourmet restaurants to sampling local cuisine in a family-run village café; from lush green golf courses to family amusement parks and nature safaris; from hiking & biking to horseback riding. In short, the Midi has a virtually inexhaustable array of things to see and do and the new owners of Chateau Marcel, Ken & Belinda Crofutt (he a bi-lingual Californian and she a tri-lingual Anglo-Australian) will be happy to help you plan daily itineraries from your home-away-from-home.
Location description from owner
The Occitanie region
Languedoc-Roussillon is a magical, sun-drenched land including sandy Mediterranean beaches; soul-soothing mountain meadows & streams; stunning rocky gorges carved into the rugged landscape studded with parasol pines, yucca trees and agave plants; historic churches, forts & castles; and hectare after hectare of vineyards carpeting rolling hills and vallies with tasting 'caves' and ancient villages spotted throughout.
The immediate vicinity of Chateau Marcel in the Minervois wine area of the Hérault Departement incorporates many of the regions attractions. For example Homps (5 min. by car) is a mooring stop-off town of the Canal du Midi where you can lunch at a quay-side café, walk or bike along the tree-lined footpaths of the canal or take a boat tour through its many locks. Then there is, of course, the Cathar stronghold of Minerve nestled high in rocky gorges. Minerve was a fortifed village that eventually fell to the forces of Simon de Beufort in 1210 who mounted catpults across the gorge to pummel the village's ramparts before making their final assault . Today this medieval village is still inhabited and largely intact with artisan shops and cafés catering to visitors roaming its meandering cobbled alley ways. The Minervois is one of Languedoc's principle wine producing areas and its thousands of hectares of vineyards and small family-run 'caves' make it an oenophile's dream to tour and taste.

“Ever want to stay in a castle? This is it.”
From the time we entered the gated grounds of Chateau Marcel, until the time we left, we felt privileged to be in such a handsome place. Ken and Belinda Crofutt have taken this impressive chateau and converted it into apartments that are both comfortable and spacious. Our apartment was adjacent to the pool (too bad that it was not warm enough to enjoy it at this time of year). Our entry was from the patio and led to a large living room/dining room/kitchen. The fireplace at the far end of the room was pretty spectacular. The master bedroom with adjoining bath was well decorated. Actually, the entire apartment has a warm and homey feel. There is another bedroom and bath. But, since there was just the two of us, we used the second bedroom as a sort of study. The apartment had just about everything you would want - WiFi, large screen TV, etc. Perhaps the best thing about our stay was the help and advice we received from Ken and Belinda. They both respected our privacy and were there whenever we needed them. Bravo, Ken and Belinda - HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!
