The Occitanie region

For most of its life, the Pyrenees-Orientales region (formerly called Roussillon) of Languedoc was Spanish, only reverting to France in 1659. Since then it has retained a distinctively Catalan flavour, with Catalan spoken widely, and the Sardana dance, Bullfights and Paschal rituals still performed. The food too has a Spanish flavour, with spicy chorizzo and paella popular.

The landscape of the Pyrenees-Orientales is perhaps the most dramatic in Languedoc, dominated by the towering Pyrenees, the foothills of which hold some of Languedoc Roussillon's most interesting sightseeing.

As the plain nears the coast, huge etangs appear (inland lakes), home to fishermen and wind surfers alike. The coast is mostly flat, but suddenly (thanks to the Pyrenees) starts to undulate at Collioure, creating picturesque bays and headlands (more like Provence). Collioure is particularly pretty with chic restaurants and cafes looking out over the battlements and pastel-coloured houses.

The mountains of Languedoc's Pyrenees-Orientales give way to huge river valleys of the Tet and Tech rivers, where fruit farms abound growing apricots, apples, almonds and much of France's early vegetables.

Ceret

Céret is the pretty and charming centre of the Vallespir region. It is famous for its Musée d'Art Moderne (Museum of Modern Art), which has numerous Picasso paintings, sculptures and ceramics, including the famous bull fighting bowl series. The museum also features paintings by Chagall, Matisse, Herbin, Soutine, lots of Fauves and a few Impressionists.

The top floor of the Museum hosts touring exhibitions. The museum is open 364 days of the year.
The Pont du Diable (Devil's Bridge) is a single arch stone bridge built between 1321 and 1341. With a single span of 45.45 m, it was at the time of its construction the world's largest arch bridge in terms of span length.

“Fantastic villa, stunning location”

Reviewed 24 Jul 2015

Gorgeous property in a secluded yet very easily accessible location, a short 10 minute walk from the beautiful market town of Ceret, with its fantastic weekend market, shops and restaurants. The villa is superbly furnished and kept, with a lovely pool and stunning terraces from which to drink in the endless views. The owners provide a very warm yet non intrusive welcome and could not do enough for us if we wanted help or advice on the area. I would not hesitate to recommend for a truly relaxing break and have already organised a return trip next year!

Thank you for your review, we are so glad that you enjoyed your stay at Villa Fleurie and we look forward to seeing you again next year.

“Wonderful Villa Fleurie Holiday!”

Reviewed 11 Jul 2015

This was our second visit to Villa Fleurie and we were so lucky to have amazing hot weather for the whole week. The beautiful pool and garden were our tranquil sanctuary and the perfect antidote to our busy work schedule this summer! Each time we visit we find out more about the region and also find more things to explore and do! We did a lovely walk up into the mountains- cool breeze and amazing views. We saw a Red Kite and the Golden Oriole bird, plus swallowtail butterflies, hummingbird moths. We were serenaded at night by pool frogs and cicadas, and it was wonderful to be able to just walk into Ceret to visit the cafes and art museum and shops. We plan to return and stay a little longer and perhaps hire bikes because there are some great cycling routes and beaches not too far away. We would highly recommend this beautiful Villa for both families and couples. Lisa and Peter and the perfect hosts- on hand if you need anything but with the total privacy and space of the Villa and pool to enjoy. Just perfect!

Thank you for your kind comments. We are so glad that you enjoyed your stay at Villa Fleurie and we look forward to seeing you again.

We had a fantastic two week stay at Villa Fleurie. The owners Peter and Lisa were very helpful and went out of their way to ensure you had a good holiday. The accommodation was to a high standard and the garden and pool were a great place to hang out and relax whilst soaking up the views of the mountains beyond. Ceret was a short walk down the hill where you could experience the atmosphere of a lively french town, particularly enjoyed the Tuesday and Saturday markets.

“The holiday everyone enjoyed”

Reviewed 18 Aug 2013

The owners are incredibly hospitable and welcoming, and take great care to make sure that the property is maintained to the highest possible standard. It's a beautiful villa and very relaxing to just hang out by the pool or on the terrace, no need to go anywhere if you like enjoying spectacular views. The walk down the hill into Ceret is peaceful and the town is full of atmosphere and interest. We loved exploring the hills above the villa, walking over the border into Spain, or cycling up to Las Illas for a drink, or further afield.

Thank you for taking the time to post this delightful review. It was great to see you all again, we were so pleased you made a return visit. We are delighted you had a a lovely holiday and we hope we shall see you again , should you visit these parts in the future.

The owners obviously take notice of their clients feedback as each time we visit something new has been added to this already well equipped villa.
