The Languedoc-Roussillon region
The Village of Ceret:
Ceret is a beautiful Catalan town at the foot of the Pyrenees in the very south of France. Located just 10 minutes from the Spanish border and 30 minutes from the Mediterranean Sea, Ceret offers a variety of cultural, historical and artistic experiences.
The town of Ceret consists of the ancient village of Ceret surrounded by the more modern township comprising almost 8000 residents.
The ancient village where the apartment is located consists of narrow cobbled stone streets lined with magnificent plane trees which offer welcome relief from the summer sun. Take any narrow road or pathway in the old village and you will be surprised at what you will discover.
Ceret is known as the Cherry Capital with a Cherry Festival around Easter each year and in July, the Feria de Ceret which culminates in the ceremonial running of the bulls is a high powered celebration. Being Catalan, Ceret has its own bull fighting ring but with Catalunya banning bull fighting, this part of the celebration is likely to end.
Ceret is also known for its art and boasts the world renowned Museum of Modern Art. Pablo Picasso lived in Ceret for several years around 1911 and other artists such as Matisse, Chagall and Dali also were regulars to the village.
Every Saturday, the main street of the old village hosts a wonderful market specialising in local produce. Imagine the convenience of walking out the front door of your apartment and stepping straight into the buzz and excitement of the market proper.
Ceret is also perfectly positioned to visit such exciting places as Barcelona (2 hours by car), Collioure, the fishing village on the Mediterranean (30 minutes), the Principality of Andorra (2 ¾ hours), Carcassonne (1 ½ hours) and numerous ski fields in the Pyrenees (1 ½ hours).
Ceret is a rugby playing area and has its own stadium an easy stroll from the apartment.
Of course, the Languedoc – Roussillon region is well known for its wine growing and culinary delights. Ceret is served by dozens of restaurants and eateries all within an easy stroll of the apartment.
The area around Ceret is well known as a walking and cycling area and other sports such as tennis, golf and water sports are easily found.
Things to see and do:
Musee d'Art Moderne (Museum of Modern Art): The museum features paintings , sculptures and ceramics by such well known artists as Picasso, Chagall, Matisse and Dali and has ongoing showings by international artists. It is open 364 days a year.
The Pont du Diable (Devils Bridge): Built between 1321 and 1341, this stone arch medieval bridge spands the river Tech. At the time of its' construction it was the world's largest bridge arch and dominates the approach to Ceret.
Saturday Markets: One of the larger local markets, they run right by the front door of the apartment and offer fresh local produce and crafts as well as a fun and entertaining selection of buskers and musicians.
Collioure and Port Vendres: Located just 28 klms from Ceret and on the Mediterranean Coast, these beautiful fishing villages are well worth a visit and a seafood lunch would be a smart suggestion.
Roses: A beautiful seaside resort about 40minutes from Ceret on the Mediterranean in Spain.
The Principality of Andorra: Located about 1 ¾ hours from Ceret in The Pyrenees, this Principality is renowned for its' skiing and Duty Free Shopping.
Barcelona: Without a doubt one of the great fun cities of the world. Barcelona is located just 180 klms from Ceret and an easy drive along very good motorways or by train.
