Proudly Catalan, Maureillas village is less than 10 minutes walk away. It has a traditional village square with two restaurants, one gourmand and one typically Catalan which often features live music. There is also a boulangerie, a grocer's, a cash machine and

other local facilities. The sophisticated and stylish town of Céret is only 5 minutes' drive away, famous for its Picasso influenced Modern Art Museum, its wonderful market reputed to be the best in the whole Languedoc Roussillon region and its classic flavour of pavement cafés, bars and restaurantsr - and its status as the cherry capital of France when the roads are lined with stalls heaped with bunches of cherries for sale from the local farmers. The beautiful Côte Vermeille of the Mediterranean is approx half hour's drive away, Spain is just 10 minutes down the road with the stunning Costa Brava within easy reach, Carcassone only 1 hour's drive through the Corbières vineyards and all the beauties of Southern France just up the road.

In fact there is something for everyone here, culture one day, mountain air another, clubbing at the lively resorts the next - whatever you want is on your doorstep for the young and not so young.

And don't rule out this area for a winter break. The light is therapeutic which is why it is an artists' haven. You can be walking on the beach one day and even dining al fresco at lunchtime in the warmth of the sun and the next, you could be having a romp in the snow as the ski pistes are just 1 1/2 hrs drive up the mountain. The villa is cosy and warm so ideal to retreat to in the evenings.

Location description from owner

The Occitanie region

The Department of the Pyrenees Orientales conceals many treasures: a wonderful Mediterranean coastline with fantastic beaches, a landscape of breathtaking mountainous beauty, an important architectural heritage and a rich and varied culture. The area offers something to suit everyone – swimmers, sunbathers, walkers. And don't forget the Pyrenees in winter – skiers and boarders alike are well catered for. The 'pistes' are approximately 1 ½ hr drive from Maureillas on the road to Andorra and all equipment can be hired at the resorts.Known as Catalunia, this area of Pyrenees Orientales offers a spicy mixture of French and Catalan in customs and food. Lively resorts are dotted along the coastline packed with busy restaurants, cafes, clubs and discotheques. Perpignan is a wonderful stylish town full of fashionable boutiques and pavement cafes and restaurants where you can watch the world go by in the warm Mediterranean sunshine - plus the renowned 'Galeries Lafeyette', the French equivalent of Harvey Nicks.

And just across the border (only about half an hour from the villa), you can visit the beautiful and stylish town of Figueres, home town of Salvador Dali which boasts the Dali Museum, full of surrealist masterpieces. Dali himself is buried inside this museum. Gerona is also really worth a visit – about 40 mins down the road. You can walk all along the ramparts of the old fort once you cross the bridge to the old town which has a 'Venice-like' bridge crossing. And the colonnaded main shopping street is full of boutiques and cafes.

And, of course, there is the magnificent Barcelona – just an hour and a half away from Maureillas on the autoroute or you can take the old road just at the junction outside Maureillas. You can now get the TGV from Perpignan or Figueres direct to Barcelona and probably the best way as you won't need your car in Barcelona.

The Pyrénées Orientales are reputed to have 320 days of sunshine and the light has a certain luminosity - as its popularity as an artists' destination will verify. The summers are long and hot, starting in May through to September. Spring and Autumn are warm and mild and the winters are short and sweet - bright days and cold evenings. You can sit outside in January at lunchtime and even catch the sun though the nights can be chilly. Of course, the mountainous regions are snow covered so you can have a walk on the beach one day and a day on the ski pistes or a romp in the snow on another. It's an ideal climate.

Ceret

The proudly Catalan village of Maureillas is but a short walk away from the villa and affords all amenities such as grocery stores, La Poste, a pharmacy, a bar/restaurant/cafe serving cheap and cheerful Catalan food and wine and a gourmand restaurant (66/vins) in the old central square, a boulangerie, etc. The restaurants often invite local musiciens to play live music - Maureillas is a surprisingly lively village with a strong sense of community and with a varied historical backdrop and all this makes visitors come back time and time again. In high season, the leisure area in Maureillas (10 mins on foot from the villa so you can stagger back!) hosts several fêtes/fiestas with Catalan themes on Friday and Saturday evenings with cheap food and wine available and free live music and discos. Horse riding facilities, walking and hiking into the Pyrenees are easily accessible.

The village of St. Jean Pla de Courts, a few minutes drive from the property, has a brand new village square with a Post Office, newsagent, grocery store, a restaurant, butcher and a charcuterie and a beautiful ancient church and cobbled village square with wondrous views of the Pyrenees,. The a short walk from the villare are two lakes (plans d'eau) where you can swim, have a picnic and the kids can play in the small adventure park where is a a proper tele-ski club complete with cafe, tree walks and bouncy castles (see pics). There's another lovely cafe/restaurant there also (La Guinguette) which comes highly recommended by one of our previous tenants.

The Pyrenees which surround the villa are a joy to explore with hamlets, villages and spa towns (like the famous Amelie-des-Bains ). Along the mountain roads where you can buy local organic produce like honey, eggs, charcuterie, etc.

The larger towns of Ceret or Le Boulou both 5 mins drive away house banks, supermarkets, DIY shops, boutiques, plentiful bars and cafes, tourist attractions and wonderful markets. Ceret market is legendary and stretches through the town every Saturday morning and is bustling even in the winter when the town comes alive with live music. In the summer, Ceret hosts another market on Tuesday nights. Ceret is famous for its modern art gallery and its affiliation with Picasso who spent some time there. Ceret is a stylish and sophisticated town with lovely outdoor cafes and restaurants. Its main square is beautiful with an ancient fountain and restaurants all around. It even has a small amphitheatre hosting outdoor plays in the summer.

Le Boulou, five minutes' drive the other way, is a thriving, working town which has recently been prettily renovated. It has markets on Thursday and Sunday mornings, a vibrant café and restaurant culture in it's centre plus large, late-opening supermarkets and outlet stores on retail parks just outside the town. It has its own entertainment with regular fiestas - any excuse for a fiesta in this Catalan region. There is always a reason to celebrate - la fête de quelquechose!

The whole area is alive with historic attractions dating back to and before Medieval times and a joy to explore. Perpignan is a lovely Medieval city with large cobbled squares, its famous Moorish 'Castillet', plus stylish boutiques, Catalan restaurants, bars and cafes. There are old forts and Cathar castles dotted throughout the older hills of the Corbières and the Fenouillades which perched on craggy mountain tops which are climbable and afford amazing views out to the Mediterranean.

Just north is pure France with historic towns and beautiful landscapes. Carcassonne, Narbonne, even the 'Canal du Midi' are all easily accessible. Spain is 10 mins drive away with easy access to the Costa Brava , Gerona and Barcelona so the best of both worlds. If the day seems cloudy in Maureillas, you can drive half an hour to the beautiful Costa Brava and find the sun in gorgeous little creeks.

There is just so much to see in this relatively unexplored and unspoilt region that you will want to come back again and again.
