Description

This Jewel of an Apartment is located in Piazza Civica, the Main Square of the Old Town. On the second floor of a 15th Century historic building, Smeraldo mixes the best of the local characteristics and modern contemporary. The apartment has maintained the original wooden beams on the high ceiling and has been renovated with sophisticated modern Italian design including a beautiful staircase.

The local shops, bars and restaurants are all outside the front door. Smeraldo is within walking distance of the port, the ancient bastions of the city and the local beaches.

" Fantastic stay"! The apartment itself is in impeccable condition, clean and very well maintained. The renovation work was very well done. We like this style and it did not disappoint. The flat is located basically near the main square in the old town (Piazza Civica) and literally let out into the main walking area (so you're close to everything). Highly recommended"

" Perfect Holiday! We have spent five days at Smeraldo apartment, and we are very happy. The location in the middle of the old town is perfect: you can visit by foot all the historical center and the port is close to the apartment. The decoration of the house is very nice. Everything is clean and confortable.

Location description from owner

The Sardinia region

Sardinia is the second largest island in the Mediterranean Sea. It was first inhabited by man in 6,000 B.C and is known for its rich archaeoligical history. The first settlers were from the Italian mainland and the Iberian peninsula. The Island has a history of invasion with one of the first being the Phoenicians and defended itself against constant coastal raids from the Carthagians, Byzantines and Berbers. In 1354 the Aragons seized Alghero and transformed it into a Catalan city. Visitors will still see elements of the Iberian origins (the Aragons were in power for more than 400 years in Alghero) in the local dialect which is similar to Catalan and can be seen in the dual named street signs. Since the 18th century the Italian royal family used to spend their summer holiday in Alghero.

Sardinia is known as an island of the extremes. Rugged coast lines, turquoise and emerald coloured seas, large areas of pastures and dense mountain ranges in the centre of the Island.

The coastlines around Alghero are stunning with views of Capo Caccia from all angles. A short drive will take one to either Bosa further south or Stintino a bit further north, each of which are rich in local culture and history.

The temperatures in the summer on the coast can average 28 degrees celcius, but can get up to the mid 30's in August. It is possible to swim from May to November as the summer months can extend for about 6/7 months. The spring time is more mild and allow the visitors to appreciate the lush green countryside prior to the arrival of the dry heat of the summer.

Centro Storico, Alghero

Walking historic cobbled stone streets, under the arches and along the walled bastions that protected this city from invasion will captivate your imagination. Alghero is a vibrant, modern city that has a local population year round of approximately 30,000 people. Various cultural events and exhibits take place throughout the year. You can find ancient churches and fortresses as you wander throughout the city. Visitors can also gain an understanding of the local culture by visiting the "Mercato" or Market in the centre of town which is overflowing with local fruits and vegetables, fish that has arrived fresh from the sea that morning, local meats and cheeses from the countryside, and the famous breads (a must have is the pane guttiau...trust us!) and dolce.

Local beaches and restaurants are all within walking distance. Bicycles are also available. For those looking to explore the sites in the vicinity, we recommend renting a car to take you to the cliffs of Capo Caccia, the Grotte di Nettuno or to the beaches of Bombarde or Stintino.

“Beautiful Alghero”

Reviewed 13 Apr 2015

Everything about this apartment was fabulous, it really felt like ours for the stay. Giuseppe & Elizabeth have gone out of their way to ensure you have everything you need for a perfect break away, even an ipod dock, free Wifi. Everything was immaculate, you felt like the first people ever to use the apartment. Complimentary tea & coffee a welcome pack. Although we didn't cook the facilities are first class. The location is perfect to explore the romantic walled town. There are so many fab restaurants, bars and cafés to choose from shopping excellent too. I cannot thank Giuseppe & Elizabeth enough for such a relaxing peaceful stay. We will definitely, definitely be back xxx

Dear Guest, thank you very much for your lovely comments. We are so happy to hear that you enjoyed your holiday in Alghero and your stay with us in the heart of the old town. We also happy to hear that you felt like at home. We look forward to welcoming you again soon.

“A tastefully presented and comfortable apartment within a wonderful location.”

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay in this lovely apartment in the beautiful old town of Alghero. All our needs were catered for and we had no difficulties whatsoever. The owners arranged taxis for our arrival and departure which were exactly on time as was the owners' representative who was very friendly. The only slight criticism which we have, and this is a very minor one indeed, is that the clearance height above the double bed is a bit low. This would not put us off in any way and we fully intend to return to this apartment in the future.

Dear Guest, thank you for your comments. We are very happy to hear that you enjoyed your stay in our apartment and we look forward to welcome you again soon.

“lovely flat, perfect location.”

Reviewed 17 May 2014

my wife and I stayed at this flat for around 10 days in early May. Had a splendid holiday but will spare you the details in favour of getting to the facts about the apartment. CLEAN/MODERN: well equipped, good wi-fi, nice kitchen, good hot shower etc SETTING: located on the 2nd floor in a really well restored old building. LOCATION: absolutely perfect. On the junction between, basically, the old town square and the main shopping street. Area is surrounded by restaurants and a couple of hundred yards from the sea SERVICE: our arrival was delayed from ~2030 until well after 1am. Still got met at the airport and flat with no problem. Handy owner-written guide to the town comes with the booking, very useful for sorting out the first couple of days/nights. Things to consider... the staircase to the bedroom is quite tight, and headroom's a bit limited up there. I had to bend over (6 feet tall) to get about. This was no problem for us but might be worth considering if you're not as spry as you'd like. the perfect location means that you'll get some noise from the street, although the windows are good. Mostly this just adds to the atmosphere, especially during the day. Wasn't a problem for us in the evening and peace is one pair of earplugs away at peak times. Having such a nice apartment to retire to made a big difference to our holiday. Wouldn't hesitate to book it again.

Thank you very much for your review. We try to take utmost care of our guests so that they can have a great holiday. We are happy to hear that you enjoyed your stay and that you appreciated the functionality of the apartment and the magic atmosphere of the building in the main square of the old town. We love Alghero and we are pleased to hear that you enjoyed Alghero, too. We look forward to welcoming you again soon!

“Cosy apartment in the heart of the busy old town”

Reviewed 12 Oct 2012

My husband and I have just returned from a wonderful week in Alghero. The apartment is brilliantly located right in the heart of the old town and, although small, is stylish, comfortable and very well equipped. Giuseppe could not have been more helpful and informative in advance of our stay. The prearranged taxi from the airport meant we were settled in the apartment in no time, thanks also to the useful provisions (e.g. tea, coffee, wine, etc.) awaiting us! The only downside to Smeraldo is the noise, which I suppose is only to be expected in such a central location. While we enjoyed our trips to the beach etc. it was always great to return to the old town and our cosy home from home. We particularly loved the delicious salamis and cheeses from the friendly guys in the shop called La Cambusa on Vicolo Serra just across from the apartment: just look out for the boar at the door! We really enjoyed our stay and hope to return.

Thank you very much for your comments. We enjoyed having you and your husband as our guests and we are happy to hear that you enjoyed your stay at Smeraldo. We are sorry you experienced some noise from our neighbor's child who had been ill. We look forward to welcoming you again hopefully soon.

“Lovely Apartment in Great Location”

Reviewed 4 Sep 2012

We stayed at Smeraldo for 10 nights in August and really enjoyed our stay. The apartment was exactly as the owners had described but you have to stay there to appreciate what a great location it is in! The apartment is spotless and the kitchen is really well equipped with a new oven and every utensil you could ask for. The owners were so helpful both before we arrived and also during our stay as they kept in touch to make sure everything was ok. Thanks Giuseppe and Elizabeth! The Forde Family

Thank you very much for your kind comments. We are happy to hear that you enjoyed Smeraldo and Alghero. It was a pleasure to meet you and your family and we look forward to having you back in the future.
