Location description from owner

The Yorkshire region

Yorkshire is big and beautiful country. It reaches into no less than three National Parks - the Yorkshire Dales, North York Moors and the Peak District. It also includes the majestic moorland of Bronte Country and the tranquil beauty of the Howardian Hills and the Yorkshire Wolds. Our spectacular coastline is among the finest in Britain, much of it protected as Heritage Coast.

Wander the streets of ancient York. Cruise a trans-Pennine canal. Ride the legendary Settle-Carlisle Railway and cross the mighty Humber on the world's longest single span suspension bridge. Even follow in the footsteps of Captain Cook and Dracula.

Go down a real coal mine. Or ride a time car back to the world of the Vikings. Read the television news in the National Museum of Photography, Film and Television. Nosedive down the world's largest roller coaster. Explore the world's oceans at The Deep. Make scientific discoveries at Magna.

Shop in one of Europe's largest malls. Sample northern ale straight from the brewery. Tuck into Yorkshire pudding and the world's most famous fish and chips. Take to the hills on Britain's toughest long-distance footpath. Or take to the turf at one of our premier courses.

It's no surprise that Yorkshire is proud of its past and a sense of history is never far away. Castles, abbeys and stately homes weave their rich and evocative story and in contrast, our powerful industrial heritage is vividly created in some of Britain's most exciting museums.

Find out what makes Yorkshire the nation's film and TV set. From 'Brideshead Revisited' to TV favourites like 'Emmerdale', 'Heartbeat', 'Last of the Summer Wine' and 'All Creatures Great and Small'.

Heritage and countryside, leisure and sport, great times out and family fun. Something different every day in Yorkshire.

“Great base for visiting York”

Reviewed 12 Apr 2016

Great flat on the edge of the medieval city. Good sized rooms and facilities for self catering. Small selection of toys, books and DVDs occupied our children when we weren't site seeing though we also took our own toys. Short walk to the city and nicest way is to use the walls and walk around to Gooderamgate which has nice cafes and shops. Immediate area around the flat is not that pretty but with several supermarkets a couple of minutes walk it is very convenient and safe. We would definitely stay again.

“Great Apartment”

Reviewed 29 Jun 2015

Great apartment. Had everything in it you need for a weekend away. A small ASDA across the road. Yes it is a bit industrial but a very easy walk into the city centre takes about 10 minutes. I also walked back to the train station which took about 1/2 an hour. Easy communication with the owners and the caretaker who met me with the keys was lovely. I would definitely recommend.

“Home from home”

Lovely apartment , well presented ,clean and tidy with the bonus of an off road parking space. The apartment is an easy stroll to either the Minster area or Coppergate (Jorvik ) and the main shopping streets. Highly recommended

“Smart little apartment an easy walk away from York centre - with a great pub nearby too.”

Reviewed 23 Mar 2015

Merchants Gate is a great value-for-money base for exploring York, the flat was very nicely presented with everything we needed. Traffic noise not too noticeable (fine with windows closed anyway), and the apartment block was really quiet. You can see York Minster from the flat but the rest of the view is a bit industrial, however if you're out all day this isn't a big deal. The Black Swan on Peasholme Green (about 3 mins walk) has great beer, friendly atmosphere and loads of character, menu looked nice too but they don't serve food in the evenings at weekends. If you need extra parking there are plenty of JustPark.com spaces nearby. Booking the flat was easy, plenty of friendly and helpful communications from the owners and the keyholder. Would definitely come back!

“Great accommodation a short walk out of the city centre”

Reviewed 23 Feb 2015

A very clean and well maintained property with two good sized bedrooms (one double and one twin), good lounge and dining kitchen. Quiet residential area a short walk from the city centre with one parking space. We would recommend for anyone visiting York.

“Well equipped, spacious and contemporary in a very convenient location.”

Second visit to this apartment and would not now consider booking a hotel. 5 mins walk to City Walls and further few mins to city centre - marvellous location. Small Asda just across the road proves extremely handy. Apartment is clean, comfortable, well-equipped and attractive. All appliances worked well including the heating and hot water. Booking is easy on a good website. All arrangements for arrival worked like clockwork and the housekeeper who met us to show us round was very pleasant and helpful.

“Great place to stay,”

Reviewed 7 Nov 2014

We loved the flat, it had all you could need, lovely walk into York. There is so much to see and do, and it was great to have a really good place to come back to. Only down side the bed was not very comfortable but that is down to taste. On the whole the flat was spotless the only place needing attention was the tiles in the shower, they needed sorting out, but on the whole we had a great time and would like to return.

“York City break”

Reviewed 29 Oct 2014

We enjoyed a lovely couple of days in York. The apartment was great, a really nice space to relax after a long day sightseeing. Very clean, well equipped and much nicer than a cramped hotel room, even for a couple of days. Thoroughly recommend the National Railway Museum and the Jorvik Centre in York. The children also really enjoyed walking the walls. Spent a lot of time in Betty's which is quite an institution.

“Home from Home”

Reviewed 22 Oct 2014

HI we stayed here for a weekend and the apartment was clean, plenty room for 4 of us and walking distance into York City Centre, would happily stay here again.

“Very Comfortable Apartment”

Reviewed 29 Jul 2014

Stayed for 2 nights for Music Showcase weekend at York Races. Apartment was very comfortable and whilst it was very hot outside for the whole weekend, we were able to maintain a cool temperature inside by opening windows. The apartment is light and airy and has all the equipment needed for a short break, and rooms are spacious with plenty of storage space in both bedrooms. It is a short stroll into the city centre - with two options - either straight to Parliament Street or to Monkgate - both take about the same time to walk - around 5 minutes. Morrisons and Waitrose very close and with a small Asda supermarket just acros the road it is ideally situated to pick up the essentials if you want to eat in the apartment.. It is a second floor apartment with views of the Minster and even though there is no lift, the stairs are very easy to manage. Although there was some traffic noise it was not intrusive, as we have found in some other apartments in the city centre and that was with windows wide open! I would have no hesitation in booking again and would recommend to anyone who wants to be close to the city centre in a reaonably priced apartment. I agree with another reviewer - much better than staying in a hotel.
