Location description from owner

The Yorkshire region

The beautiful city of York reflects two thousand years of history and captures the lives of its eventful past in its stunning architecture. York is a place of discovery, from the Roman ruins beneath the impressive edifice of York Minster, or it's incredible Viking past where you can travel York's original streets beneath its bustling shopping centre in an interactive and entertaining display of times gone by. Alternatively, enjoy more 'recent' times such as the Shambles where those medieval shops and houses almost appear to touch each other from opposite sides of the street.

York's pivotal location also provides a huge and impressive train museum as testament to the city's railway links. For those with a sweet tooth, the past meets the present, and, if you are lucky enough for the wind to blow in the right direction you may sense the sweet smell of chocolate on the air from York's last remaining chocolate factory, and you can also learn about this important industry in the Chocolate Museum.

For those that prefer retail therapy, York boasts some stunning individual shops in the city centre as well as a designer shopping mall a short distance from the city centre which, is accessible by a frequent bus service.

There is an abundance of cafés and restaurants and outside eating places for the spring and summer months, and more historic pubs with claims of haunted residents than you can shake a stick at, and plenty of nightlife.

If you are looking for a quieter time, you can enjoy a stroll on the city walls, visit the castle or take yourself outside the city completely to visit some of Yorkshire's stunning countryside villages or famous abbeys.

Central York

The quiet street of Ogleforth joins Chapter House street some 10 metres from the front of the Townhouse which represents the old via decumana of the Roman fortress which can be visited underneath the Minster, and was the main N.E entrance into York until the building of Monk Bar (gatehouse) in c 1330. Now this tiny cobbled street simply joins the quiet street of Ogleforth to the Chapter House of York Minster, as well as providing entrance to the beautiful Treasurer's House (National Trust property) and Grays Court, where you can enjoy the tea and cakes in its historic rooms or garden overlooking the city walls.

Within a minute or two's walk, you can either enjoy the beautiful Dean's Parks of the Minster or the bustling art and clothing shops of Low Petergate, as well as an abundance of restaurants and cafes.
