Hidden away, behind Cliff St, up some steps is Bolthole Cottage, Walkers Yard . It is central for shops, dining out, and browsing the antique shops. Being off the main street it is quiet. Many locals dont know its there! Whitby has a great history and has been home to photographers, writers, and artists down the ages. Give your senses a treat, bring camera / paint brush, or just hole up in the cottage and have much needed R+R !
The surrounding area is wonderful for walking, leafy monks trods, leading from the Abbey, moor tracks over the heather. Some great Pubs on your way. (Recommendations kept in cottage!) All well signed by the National Park.
The Esk Valley Train line will take you to interesting villages---- and you can walk back?! The 'Harry Potter' steam trains are close at Grosmont for enthusiasts. Fossill hunting on the rocky shore at Robin Hood's Bay-- bring hammer and chisel. Hire a mountain bike and follow the old Cinder Track disused railway along the coast. A good base in central Whitby so you can use the restaurants /or cook in.

The Yorkshire region
If you are coming to the NORTH EAST COAST try to come at least once when the Heather is in bloom on the North Yorks Moors in August. Its a carpet of purple and VERY beautiful!
If you base at Bolthole Cottage you can catch the Esk Valley Train line from Whitby Station. This follows the River Esk up the Valley there are many small villages where the pub food and walking is great---, LEALHOLM, EGTON, GROSMONT etc. You can walk following the river back down to Whitby, or catch a return train. Regular Steam Trains with restaurant car -- see North Yorks Moors steam trains from Grosmont Station to Pickering.
Dalby Forest has bike hire as does "Trailways" at Hawsker (bike hire between Whitby and Robin Hoods Bay on the old disused railway line).
Whitby has been voted in 2008 best seaside resort so makes an ideal holiday location . We have upmarket restaurants ,-especially sea food. If you are celebrating; there are a couple of really good cafe/bars where you can share a bottle of bubbly and people watch! There are views over the Harbour, .and up to St Mary's Church and Abbey, above the 199 steps (complete with coffin rests)
The 26 mile coast line of the North Yorkshire Moors national park is spectacular. You can find Fossil Amonites and Belamites. If interested in fossils our museum is a must.
There is a lovely walk from Whitby to Robin Hoods Bay. Follow the Coastal path, or the old Railway line. Robin Hoods Bay has good pub food , cafes, and well documented Smuggling history. The narrow cobbled streets have a variety of small shops. There is a Good carvery on Sundays at the Victoria Hotel! Dolphin pub also great for home cooked food. Lovely homemade cakes AND fish and chips at Candys at top of Bay Bank , --- you can catch the ARRIVA Bus back to Whitby (every half hour)
If you go North along our coast --- (a 2mile walk on the beach ) will take you to SANDSEND. -- Stop at the wooden tea hut for crab sandwiches or kippers and brown bread! The Hart Inn also has a good atmosphere, log fires and food it allows dogs! DO walk up Sandsend Valley to the old village and walk in the Mulgrave Woods-- beautiful!

"Ideal location, superb cottage"
The cottage was comfortable, very clean and in an ideal location. Surrounded by great restaurants and excellent bakeries. Car park is close by and only cost £5 for 24 hours. Kaaren is very helpful, friendly and willing to share her local knowledge. A great weekend. :)
Happy you enjoyed your stay, thank you for your comments, and glad you were comfy! Cheers Kaaren

"A little piece of heaven in Whitby!"
The cottage is fantastic - nice and cosy and just perfect for a couple wanting to get away from it all near the sea. Both me and my girlfriend liked it straight away and couldn't wait to get inside and have a look around. It has everything you could need with a well equipped kitchen, cosy lounge and lovely bedroom and bathroom upstairs. Plus, as a bonus, looking out of the skylight you look straight across at Whitby Abbey! Kaaren (the owner) was very welcoming and made sure that we had everything we needed and even left us milk and biscuits for us when we arrived! Obviously it takes some finding as it isn't obvious where the cottage is, but helpful instructions are provided and the seclusion adds to the 'getting away from it all' feeling. One thing you may want to bear in mind is that the seagulls are quite vocal in Whitby - but that isn't really anything you can do about!
Thank you very much Howard! Glad you both had a good rest--- and relaxed! The Seagull babies have 'flitted' now -- left the roof, for flying lessons. Kind Regards, Kaaren

"Lovely hide-away close to the town and beach, highly recommended"
Stayed here for a sunny weekend in July, on our first visit to Whitby. Kaaren's information and welcome card were great and the milk, bread and biscuits were really thoughtful. The cottage was just as shown, entered up a few steps and into a small yard so quiet and hidden away but yet only a 2 minute walk into the town. A lovely location. Clean and tidy with all the equipment you might need and lots of homely touches too, it really was a home from home. Parking on the nearby streets was free which really surprised us, although finding a space was tricky - best to wait until the day visitors have gone and park up in the evening. Whitby is a lovely town and we so enjoyed exploring and will definitely be back to stay here on a future visit.
So glad you enjoyed your stay and were comfy. Thanks for review! Kaaren

We stayed at this cottage for 3 nights (a weekend break) at the end of October. It was absolutely perfect from arriving and experiencing the quaint and quirky entrance to discovering a welcome card, cakes and bread left fresh for us from the owner. It is so comfortable, including the bed and very clean, the owner has thought of everything you may just need and we couldn't have been happier. Also the location is perfect whether you want to go walking or just wander throughout Whitby. We will be back to Whitby, who wouldn't?? When we do we will be booking into Bolt Hole Cottage again. Thanks so much Kaaren your cottage made our stay extra special.
Hey what a kind review---! thankyou SO much for being bothered to do it . A thanks means the world, and here was I feeling all "end of seasonish and scrabbled!!" Glad you were comfy, and had a good rest. Cheers Kaaren
