The Oxfordshire region
An area of outstanding natural beauty, the Oxfordshire Cotswolds are a blend of breathtaking unspoilt rolling hills, historic market towns and charming picturesque villages. Set in the very heart of rural England, the central location of the Oxfordshire Cotswolds makes the area easily accessible and a superb base for wider touring of the country.
To the east lies the county town of Oxfordshire, Oxford, famous for its world renowned university and cultural activities. Bordering the Oxfordshire Cotswolds to the North and West and a short drive away are the attractions of Stratford upon Avon, birthplace of William Shakespeare, Warwick with its medieval castle standing proud above the city and the refined period splendour of Cheltenham.
Oxford is the city of dreaming spires. The golden stone of university buildings with their spires, towers and domes have shaped a graceful and timeless city, which no visitor forgets. Over 900 years as a seat of learning have made Oxford a very special place to visit any time of the year.
The city's history is fascinating. The Romans made Oxford a pottery centre, the Saxon princess Frideswide founded a religious community on the site of Oxford's cathedral, and the Oxenford, the original Saxon crossing point, gave the city its name.
Oxford is a city for all seasons. Imagine golden buildings caught by spring sunshine, summer afternoons punting on the river, autumn leaves softly falling in ancient college quadrangles or choral music sung in college chapels on crisp winter evenings. The added gem is you are only a few miles from the most beautiful and unique region in the UK The Cotswolds.
Grandpont is now an attractive part of the City with most houses being, terraced late-Victorian and Edwardian which line small roads along the Abingdon Road. More urban and less studenty than other areas of Oxford, its proximity to the station makes it very popular with professionals and commuters.
The riverside Grandpont Nature Park, featuring a former railway bridge across the river Thames, now a footbridge, is a lovely centre for walking and relaxing.
