Local information:
Hammersmith is located between High St Kensington and Chiswick and it is a very nice area. It has a decent night life, good variety of food shops and very reliable links to Heathrow airport, central London as well as Ealing, Richmond and Wimbledon.
There are many decent pubs along King Street and neighbouring roads but the main place to be on a summer's day is down by the river. The Old Ship is very popular as you can take your pint out onto the big grassy area. It's also a great place to watch the annual boat race. There are also plenty of very good restaurants close by. Jamie Olivier Began his career in The River cafe in Hammersmith, which continuous to be a destination for diners and booking queue is endless.
Hammersmith is the home of Carling Apollo, a major London live music venue that hosts some major international acts. Further down you have Riverside Studios, a BBC recording studio that shows experimental theatre and international films. There's also the Lyric Theatre along King Street, which always has an exciting program of classical plays and musicals.
Twice or 3 times a week, the Hammersmith Farmers Market is a delight to visit as it offers marvelous fresh and cooked food from the West Indies, China, India, Scotland and England can be bought at affordable prices. Hammersmith has the usual major chain stores like Marks&Spencer, Sainsbury's and Tesco.
Hammersmith doesn't have much in the way of parks, but being so close to the river really makes up for it. There's an excellent path along the River Thames that stretches from the city all way into Richmond. There are plenty of grassy areas along the path as well. Ravenscourt Park is the largest in the area with tennis courts, flower gardens, a children's play area and has plenty of open space.The London Wetland Centre is just across the river and has 105 acres of wetland inhabitants and over 180 bird species, with and interactive Discovery centre, children's farm-yard, art gallery, observatory activities and many events.
