Description

This contemporary apartment locates in an impressive historical brewery residential building between Whitechapel and the City of London (Zone 2)

The apartment is situated to the south of Bellevue Place, which forms part of the Stepney Green Conservation Area.

“Hidden away behind the Genesis Cinema and Wickham’s lopsided

department store is Bellevue Place. To get there, you walk up a side street

hung with ivy. Push this door and enter another world just as writer and

artist, Geoffrey Fletcher, did when he walked through the same doorway in

In The London Nobody Knows he wrote,“A green gate opening in the

wall leads to a totally unexpectedly corner of London, one that may well

disappear if Charrington’s, who own the property, ever decide to expand.

Bellevue Place is well named. It is a cul-de-sac with a paved pathway

leading to the far end, under a creeper-covered wall. The cottages are early

nineteenth century, and have true cottage gardens fenced with wooden rails,

pointed at the top. Here are unbelievably rural gardens, full of lilac, lupins

and delphiniums – all a minute’s walk from the Mile End Road.”

Heritage Statement

Bellevue Place was originally built as a crescent of cottages around a green

which served in the Victorian period as tea gardens. Charringtons built a

brewery on the site, cutting the terrace in half, constructing a wall round it

and using the cottages for their key workers. Enclosed on all sides, there is

a door in one wall that led directly into the brewery, which remains locked

today, now the brewery is gone.

“Bellevue Place, unseen from the street and surrounded on four sides by

high walls, is a magical place where it truly does feel as if time has stood

still. The walls form a wind break, creating an atmosphere of warm still air in

the gardens. There is an innate quiet in this corner.”

(In Geoffrey Fletcher’s footsteps, 2010, by The Gentle Author)

The garden setting is arguably a principle part of the heritage of Bellevue

Place. Accessible only by foot through a single door from the street,

the setting cultivates an strong relationship between the house and its

occupants, with the leafy front and back gardens surrounded by high, plantcovered

walls creating continuous views of greenery from every angle.

This intimate acquaintance between the terrace and the gardens forms

a key part of the design concept. The proposal is sensitive the fabric and

layout of the existing Grade II listed property, leaving the principle house

largely untouched with minor alterations to the interior. There are no

proposed changes to the front of the property, with those to the rear being

in-keeping with the massing, scale and materiality of the original terrace.

Location description from owner

The England region

South East England is a lively corner of England and it contains London, which is the capital city of United Kingdom. London is a world class city, is massive and diverse and is extremely lively that has something for tourists whatever their interests is. London has a tremendous number of historical sites which include the Greenwich Maritime Village, the Houses of Parliament, St Paul's Cathedral, The Tower of London, and Westminster Abbey. For a more modern attraction there is the London Eye. This is two rail stops from Croydon East railway station (change at Clapham Junction for Waterloo East). For music and theatre lovers there is Covent Garden in London's West End which teems with life at night. The West End has innumerable restaurants serving cuisines from many countries. China Town, a must visit place near Leicester Square, is just around the corner. If a quiet life is what you are really seeking then South East England has some very pretty countryside; most notably in Surrey, Kent and Sussex. These beautiful counties are extremely well served by Croydon East rail station. For fishing, canoeing or sailing there is nearby South Norwood Lake and Grounds - a large oasis of tranquillity for those who wish to "get away from it all".

Central London/Zone 2

The Tower Bridge & Tower of London are 3 minutes by underground. Financial District (Bank Station) & The City are about 10 minutes by underground.City Airport/ Dockland financial district 15 to 20 minutes by DLR and Overground. West End 20 minutes by underground. Shoredicth, Brick Lane and Columbia Flower Market 5 minutes by Overground There are a lot of interesting places to visit nearby my holiday apartment such as Spitalfield and Broadway Markets, trendy/funky Brick Lane/ Shoredicth areas, famous Sunday Columbia Flower market, the new financial district of Dockland and Greenwich. There are famous pubs and restaurants around Wapping, Dockland which locate in front of River Thames. There are many challenging activities you can participate such as Jack the Ripper's walk through the night walks around East London.

“Classy and well equipped apartment”

Reviewed 29 Jan 2013

We were 3 peoples and we stayed in the apartment for 3 nights (16/01 - 20/01). He is very well located with close proximity to transport and shops. Well equipped and clean! We came to see the NBA match New York vs Detroit at O2 stadium. GO Knicks !!!

“Loved it”

Reviewed 16 Dec 2012

A long weekend in London. This beats a hotel room by a long way as it has seperate bedroom and the lounge / dining / kitchen area had everything I could need. Although small it is perfect for a single person as myself or a happy couple. Met by a very helpful Alvin on arrival as arranged. On what was a cold weekend the flat was warm & cosy. Whitechapel might not be the most salubrious area of London but it is lively with decent pubs and (particularly Indian) restaurants. The 25 bus provides regular transport into City and West End. I'm looking forward to returning during the summer.

Dear Andy, Thank you for your review. I am looking forward to welcoming back my holiday apartment in 2013. Merry Christmas and a Happy New year 2013. Best wishes, Alvin Wong

“Alloggio perfetto”

Reviewed 11 Dec 2012

Thank you for your review. I hope you and your wife will stay at my apartment very soon in the near future. Best wishes, Alvin Wong

“Wonderful stay!”

Reviewed 22 Nov 2012

I stayed at Alvin's flat from Oct. 27th to Nov. 5th. I really loved this flat, nicely decorated and super clean, close to 2 tube stations, supermarkets, movie theatre ..... so convenient ! Also hip&trendy Brick Lane, Whitechapel Gallery and Shoreditch are all walking distance. There are lots of cool restaurants, shops, cafes nearby. Very easy to get around. Inside the flat, you get everything you need, like modern fitted kitchen with all appliances, TV, DVD, .... everything works too :) Alvin was a fantastic host, very attentive to guest's needs. You will never find a flat like this in London with this quality, hospitality and price. I would recommend Alvin's flat to anyone I know. Thanks Alvin, I will definitely come back!!! (^_^)

Dear Mikiko, Thank you for taking your time to review my apartment. I hope one day you will come and stay at my apartment again soon. Thank you. Best wishes, Alvin

“A cozy apartment - an awesome stay!”

Reviewed 18 Mar 2012

We were staying in the apartment for a week and just returned home from an awesome stay in vibrant London. A clean, small but very cozy apartment, and a perfectly safe & convenient location to transport (underground, overground, buses links) and daily groceries (a tesco is literally a minute away!!). Everything we need, we had it. Could not ask for a better place (perfect for a couple!) in Central London at such a economical price! Mr Alvin Wong is such a kind and considerate host, always accommodate to our needs and requests and offers useful advice to our travel plans. Thank you very much Alvin! We do look forward to our return to London.

Hi Judy, I'm happy you have arrived Hong Kong safely. Thank you for your kind review. I hope very soon you and your partner will visit the United Kingdon again. All the best. Best wishes, Alvin Wong

“great flat - I recommend it”

Reviewed 3 Jan 2012

I have stayed together with my husband (30 year olds both) in the holiday apartment home 169159 from 18 Oct 2011 to 24 October 2011. We celebrated 2 years of marriage and decided to stay in this apartment as it seemed close to the center and the price was just right. I must say that Mr. Alwin Wong, who has been our contact, was very professional about everything - he even greeted us with a bouquet of red roses and a card and congratulated me and my husband on our anniversary. The apartment is quite close to the tube station, right on the corner there is a Tesco open till late and it’s also close to a number of fast foods and an Indian restaurant I think - never tried any of them since we enjoyed English pubs too much. It’s a small apartment but it suits one couple just fine I guess for a week - we never stayed indoors anyway. If you need to cook you have all you need, also a small fridge; the heating was great and the place was very clean. I highly recommend the place if you want to visit London and not pay a fortune for a flat – for us it was great!

Hi viviana, Happy New Year 2012 to you and your husband. Just a quick note to say thank you very much for your review. Stay warm and Take care. Alvin Wong
