Location description from owner

The Tuscany region

Tuscany, the cradle of modern European culture, contains treasures of every age and style, from the Etruscan theatre and Roman baths at Fiesole, to the majestic Gothic buildings in the medieval town of Siena, to the exceptional art and architecture of Florence. The cities of Tuscany have produced writers, scientists, architects, musicians and artists, whose works have literally changed the world. The immense dome of Florence's Duomo, designed by Brunelleschi, inspired Michelangelo's design for the dome of St.Peters in Rome, and influenced architecture in towns throughout Italy. Modern science and technology have their roots in the experiments of Galileo and other researchers. Puccini was born in Lucca. Dante, Petrarch and Boccaccio broke with traditional latin and wrote in the Italian language, establishing the Tuscan dialect as Italy's literary language, and things Tuscan as the measure of culture and refinement.

Central Florence

Florence is a really nice, old and monumental city. It has a mediterranean climate. The city of Florence began to flourish in the early 1500s, under the rule of Cosimo de Medici. Famous buildings designed during that period include the Pitti Palace and the Uffizi Gallery

“As romantic as could be...”

Reviewed 10 Dec 2012

This lovely apartment was in a fantastic location right next to the Ponte Vecchio. It was the perfect size for a couple and the many traditional features really made it special. The flat was very clean and comfortable. It was a bit dark inside though and could be improved with some better lighting. Highly recommended and good value.

“Charming flat with perfect location”

Reviewed 18 Jun 2012

The flat The flat Is extremely close to the famous Ponte Vecchio bridge, the front door is the first main door on the street straight after the bridge, facing the river, only a few doors down from the Uffizi Gallery and the Galileo Museum. The flat itself does not face the river, and looks out at the Palazzo Vecchio's tower. You could not be more central for Florence; I would say it made the holiday. The flat/studio has a lounge and bedroom area, a small kitchen (with hob and microwave) and a remarkably compact and bijou bathroom, with curved folding doors for the shower as ingenious as they are functional. The only thing the kitchen lacks is an oven but we still rustled up some gorgeous dishes on the hob courtesy of the local supermarket, Conad (which is literally the other side of the Ponte Vecchio). The flat's manager gave us a portfolio containing information on how to find Conad, local restaurants to visit (and to avoid), information on the Firenze card ( a 3-day Museum pass for €50) and helpful hints on how to get about, eg, you can do Sienna and San Gimignano by local bus, so no need to pay for an organised tour. (We DID choose a tour to Sienna and San Gimignano, with Albatravel for €55 per person, as it also included visits to Montereggioni and wine tasting at a farmhouse in Chianti which produces their own wine). This apartment is the perfect base for sightseeing in Florence. Florence Florence was a dream. Conad has a supply of local produce and gorgeous wine at ridiculously cheap prices. A montepulciano d'abruzzo wine was €2.70 and an equally nice Nero d’Avola was €1.60, which were as good as, or better, than anything you’d pay £6+ for in the UK. If you wish to stray a little further than Conad for your shopping (when having a rest from dining out) , I'd definitely recommend visiting the Mercarto Centrale (local food market) near the bus station; the choice of foods and the prices are great, so it's a very good place to get a tasty yet economico lunch. We never had a bad meal dining out, but of particular note was Le Antiche Carrozze, a trattoria in Piaza Di Santa Trinita. They gave us a small glass of wine while we briefly waited for a table; our waiter, Carlos, was very helpful with our Italian (though the menu was in English) and he made the evening very enjoyable.; and at the end of our meal we noted that all diners diners received a glass each of limoncello. The food was delicious and reasonably priced, about €9-12 on average for a main. I would caution against getting a Firenze card until you have checked out which museums are in the scheme. Not all are and they are surprisingly only about €2-6 each anyway, so only consider this if you want to visit a lot of museums in the 72 hours the card allows.
