“Nice apartment in an amazing location”

Reviewed 11 May 2013

We rented Open Space for a week in mid-April 2013 and I must say it was a truly amazing holiday in Florence. We had no big issues with the apartment and its overwhelming strong-point is most certainly its central location – about 5 minutes’ walk from the Duomo and 10 minutes from Piazza Signoria. All the electrics were in good working order, the bed was comfy and we were extremely relieved to be able to use the washing machine and dry our clothes (pleasantly surprised that a foldable airer was also provided) as we do tend to travel light! A few minor points that we felt needed to be pointed out. It is a relatively expensive accommodation which however lacks the finesse one would have hoped for. We phoned up the contact person as soon as we arrived in Florence who arrived within the promised 20 minutes. She was extremely nice, but could only speak Italian or Spanish – luckily we both have a passable Italian and communication was problem-free. The apartment itself is very quaint. It can be a bit dark as the only two windows open onto a relatively narrow alleyway. There is ample space downstairs with a fully functional kitchen (managed to cook a couple of meals – we recommend the market near Chiesa di San Lorenzo for some authentic Italian produce), a TV (which worked but cannot really comment much more about – much too busy enjoying the sights), a DVD player which we did not attempt to use and WiFi which had a good signal. The dining table was a bit wobbly and had a missing border with a jutting screw which led to the demise of a pair of trousers (we've told the owners so hopefully that should be fixed soon)! There is central heating in place, but amusingly we had to commit to a temperature on arrival as it was set by our contact person and we were strongly advised not to touch it – my Italian is not brilliant but it did seem that we would be plunged into some Dantesque inferno if we so much as dared go within a metre of that dial. Luckily we had temperatures in the mid-20s and had no use for central heating. The adjoining bathroom was adequate. We thought it was a bit cheeky to just leave one loo roll for a week. Sleeping in the mezzanine was interesting – although navigating a narrow spiral staircase to go to the bathroom in the middle of the night could be a bit harrowing – certainly would not recommend indulging in too much alcohol late in the evening. The ceiling of the mezzanine was a bit low on one side – so choose the side of the bed according to height if possible. It could also be occasionally noisy at night – street crowds, neighbours coming/going. Overall a pleasant experience and we would certainly recommend this apartment to friends – particularly on the basis of its location.

“Very nice flat in good location but poorly managed.”

The apartment and location were good but the management of the property was poor. We made our booking for four weeks rental early in the year but when we got there the main gas ring on the cooker did not work and they knew about it beforehand. The satelite TV and DVD player was not set up either. We then had to put up with several visits from workman coming to try to fix things. You should not have to do that on holiday. The satelite was never fixed nor the DVD player. We also had to plead for a second set of towels from the owner as the manager wanted to charge us 50euros for them although linen was included in the rental.
