Lonely Planet review

No visit to Dubrovnik would be complete without a leisurely walk around the spectacular city walls, the finest in the world and Dubrovnik's main claim to fame. Built between the 13th and 16th centuries, they are still intact today.

The first set of walls to enclose the city was built in the 13th century. In the middle of the 14th century the 1.5m-thick defences were fortified with 15 square forts. The threat of attacks from the Turks in the 15th century prompted the city to strengthen the existing forts and add new ones, so that the entire old town was contained within a stone barrier 2km long and up to 25m high. The walls are thicker on the land side – up to 6m – and range from 1.5m to 3m on the sea side. The round Min?eta Tower protects the northern edge of the city from land invasion, while the western end is protected from land and sea invasion by the detached Lovrjenac Fort . Pile Gate is protected by the Bokar Tower , and the Revelin Fort protects the eastern entrance.

The views over the town and sea are sublime, so be sure to take a walk around the walls – it will be the high point of your visit. The main entrance and ticket office to the walls is by the Pile Gate. You can also enter at the Plo?e Gate in the east (a wise move at really busy times of day). The walls can only be walked clockwise.

In ancient times, Cavtat was known as Epidaurum, while the current name of Cavtat comes from “Civitas Vetus” as it was known by its inhabitants. In 614 the Slavs penetrated into Cavtat forcing the majority to move to Dubrovnik. It was at that time that the inhabitants, who fled to Dubrovnik, named it Cavtat, “Civitas Vetus”. In the 15th century, in 1426 to be exact, Dubrovnik purchases the town of Cavtat from Duke Pavlovic. From then on Cavtat became the second center of the republic and had an important role in the social life of the republic. Later on, as the century progressed, the town was devoted to culture and Vlaho Bukovac was born, one of the most famous Croatian painters. Recognizing its qualities and natural beauty, Cavtat focused on tourism.

Ancient remains, Renaissance palaces and villas make up the historical nucleus of Cavtat, a town south of Dubrovnik. In ancient times it was known as Epidaurum and today is the tourist and cultural center of Konavle, the southernmost region of Croatia. Visit the house of Vlaho Bukovac, a famous artist and see his collection of paintings and artwork. It is a town of beautiful beaches and luxury hotels along with a traditional way of life and customs that welcome you. Once you have familiarized yourself with the town of Cavtat, go on an excursion to Dubrovnik, the island of Mljet or the Elaphite islands

Fun and night life

During the day, if you get bored of swimming and sun tanning, we suggest you head towards Cilipi, where folklore shows are held every Sunday. You can also embark on a jeep safari and familiarize yourself with Konavle from an entirely different perspective.

You should definitely visit the old houses in Konavle to catch a glimpse of how people once lived. The night life in Cavtat is typical of any small town along the coast where local cafes easily turn into places for having fun, in the company of others and music that will make you want to dance.

The beaches in Cavtat are mainly concrete, in other words concrete terraces as a result of the hotels and apartments in Cavtat, but don't worry because there are rocky beaches where you can enjoy the crystal blue sea and even find a hidden corner of your own.

Should you decide to explore the beaches in the area, which are mainly rocky or concrete, each one is special in its own way.

Cavtat and the surrounding area offer many sports activities. So aside from the usual swimming and sun tanning you can also enjoy the sub-marine world and all the things it has to offer. There are hidden remains of sunken Roman ships which today give you the opportunity of reliving the past, especially if you are a deep-sea diver. If you are not, perhaps this is a good time to start learning.

You can also go trekking in Konavle, the region that includes the Dubrovnik hinterland and makes up the southernmost region of Croatia. There are not many inclines, so you can rent a bicycle at one of the hotels and enjoy a relaxing bicycle ride in the surrounding area.

Enjoying gastro delicacies in Cavtat is guaranteed since there is an abundance of fine, fresh fish and seafood specialties. All that is combined with fresh vegetables or freshly cooked vegetables. And after such a fine meal, once can enjoy rozata, a delicious, authentic Dubrovnik dessert which is made from cream milk, eggs and sugar and is served with caramel syrup.

If you are looking for something simpler, sit down at any one of the seaside cafes and have a sandwich or even pizza with a refreshing beverage. There are also restaurants that offer simple pasta meals.
