Description from owner

Description

Perronpierre is a three storey stone house built around 1800. The ground floor was a dairy then, and cider barrels were made where the walled garden is now. It's in the quiet centre of the village, hidden down a little access road under an archway.Shop at the bakery van or the fish van like the locals do. You'll hear them sound the horn to announce their arrival; or drive 5-10 minutes to Mur de Bretagne where there is a well stocked supermarket, pharmacy, post office and banks, and a lively market every Friday evening in the summer. The Tourist Office in the main square is full of ideas for things to do and places to go. There is a good choice of eating places in Caurel and beside the lake.

Further details

There are stairs between the first and second floors which may be difficult for those with mobility problems. Ground floor has flat, level access.

English speaking caretaker lives locally.

The main kitchen and dining area is on the ground floor adjacent to the terrace. There is a comfortable seating area that looks out on the garden and a double bedroom with en suite shower and toilet and a well stocked bookcase. A spiral staircase leads up to the first floor lounge with TV, DVD, CD player and a range of puzzles and games. There is a small kitchen and dining area that is handy for early morning and late evening drinks and snacks. The bedroom with two single beds is adjacent to the bathroom/toilet. The two floors can be separated for privacy or the additional safety of small children by lowering a trapdoor. There are stairs up to the two curtained mezzanine double bedrooms.

Further details outdoors

The property is reached via an archway from the main village street. There is parking for one car and additional parking close by. There are some stone steps up to the main door on the first floor and to the terrace at the back, but level access to the en-suite bedroom on the ground floor. The secluded walled garden is to the rear of the house with BBQ, small table and chairs. There is a full size table on the terrace and a place to sit on the balcony to catch the morning sun. The canoe is available for guest use and will tie easily onto the roof of a car.

Location description from owner

The Brittany region

Central Brittany has a gentle mix of historic towns and quiet villages tucked into the countryside. Caurel and the Lac de Guerledan lie at the southern edge of the Cote D'Amor, almost on its border with The Morbihan, half way between the northern and southern coasts of Brittany. The beautiful lake and its spectacular wooded surroundings have been called 'Little Switzerland'. Explore the little fishing ports and cliff walks of the Brittany coastline; find wide sandy beaches; discover Pont Aven much loved by artists; the fascinating standing stones at Carnac; oyster farms where you can buy a dozen to take home for tea without noticing much of a dent in your euros; and the delights of the elegant city of Vannes.

Caurel

There are lots of weekly markets in the area, and outdoor flea markets to tempt your euros. The Friday evening market at Mur de Bretagne has a changing programme of free live entertainment in the square. Go back to Caurel for the Friday night special of moule frite or fish and chips in the Relais du Lac, or be spoiled with tastes at the Auberge de Guerledan just across the road. You had better book! The Sunday market at Bon Repos, against a back drop of ancient Cistercian abbey and sparkling water is a must. The son et lumiere which takes place there during August gives a dramatic and engrossing account of Brittany's history. The Forge des Salle, an 18th century iron producing village in the forest of Quenecan is not far away and well worth a visit. There is a chateau to explore at Pontivy, and some Napoleonic history to absorb there too. The Nantes-Brest canal offers green wooded peace to walkers, cyclists and kayakers alike; or you can take the lakeside path around the Lac de Guerledan, follow it through the woods and up to spectacular viewpoints; explore the gentle gradients of the old railway track that crosses the road at Caurel and is now a walking and cycling route; or follow the local maps to find the ancient burial chambers on the hillside. There is plenty to see and to do for all ages: swimming and watersports at the lake, horse riding and quad biking close by, a nine hole golf course a short drive away at Carhaix-Plouguer (45km),fishing in the lake or canal ( license from Mur de Bretagne first!), mountain biking tracks, rock climbing, and plenty of opportunities to join the Celtic dancing.
