The Provence region

The Vaucluse is home to ancient stone settlements and picturesque villages perched on high rocks such as Gordes and Roussillon, providing many day trips and afternoons out and about. A major Roman road runs along the north side of the Massif, that led from Italy to Spain passing through the Roman town of Apt. Ancient ruins and forts barely surviving the Wars of Religion tell astounding stories to visitors of this area rich in history.

The Luberon is mainly dry and arid, made up of limestone cliffs, rocky plains and pine forests. Lavender, thyme and rosemary grow naturally and provide a sweet scented air on hot days. Canals, rivers and lakes lace the region, the cool water and green banks providing a cool haven for wildlife and bathers alike!

The climate is fairly hot and dry from may through to the end of September, with temperatures averaging already around 25 degrees in June.

Caumont sur Durance

Caumont sur Durance is situated 15 km from Avignon and 10 km from Isle sur la Sorgue. The ancient village is backed by a large hill overlooking the Durance which borders its territory to the south. The discovery of the remains of a Gallo-Roman villa is a testimony to its rich past. The village has retained its old charms and has some remarkable monuments.

Avignon. 15 km. City of history and city of theatre, the fortified city of Avignon marked by papal history will charm you with its ancient streets, spectacular monuments and museums and impressive number of cafes and restaurants. Its famous bridge still stands over the Rhone river.

L’Isle sur la Sorgue. 15 km. Attractive market town with picturesque waterways and renowned for its antique markets. Not to be missed!

Pernes-les-Fontaines. 20 km. Lovely medieval town boasting no less than 40 ancient fountains!

St Rémy de Provence. 25 km. As picturesque and Provencal as can be, with narrow winding streets, shady squares, fantastically old fountains, elegant shops, art galleries and plenty of bars and restaurants. The village and surrounding countryside has inspired many artists including Van Gogh who produced more than 150 paintings of the area. Also birthplace of Nostradamus.

FURTHER AFIELD:

Carpentras. 25 km. A real treat to all lovers of history and architecture thanks to its wealth of history and also famous for its Friday morning colourful market which attracts people from all over the region.

Ménerbes. 25 km. Superb little village with well preserved heritage, built on a hill, and surrounded by magnificent countryside.

Chateauneuf du Pape. 30 km. Medieval village built on the side of a hill, overlooked by the ruins of its ancient chateau and surrounded by its world famous vineyards.

Les Baux de Provence. 35 km. Most beautiful Provencal hill top and fortified village, in the heart of the Alpilles with brilliant view of Arles, the Camargue and the Alpilles. Officially classified and labelled as "one of the most beautiful villages in France", it is one of the “must sees” in Provence.

“Wonderful home from home”

I would highly recommend a stay in this villa. There is so much space, in and out, for an extended family. The outside living area is exceptional & the welcome and caretaking side is irreproachable. A beautiful house in a area full of things to visit.
