“Secluded House with Gorgeous Views”

Reviewed 17 May 2018

THE HOUSE: The house is in a very private area and the grounds are all for you. There's a lot of outside space which includes a private (unheated) pool, outdoor seating/dining area, sun loungers and a coal BBQ. The garden is beautifully decorated with trees and flowers, Salvatore (the host) has done a great job with the landscaping. The views are spectacular and it's a real shame the pictures here don't really capture that. On a clear day, there's a small view behind the pool where you can see Mount Etna. Inside the house, it is traditionally Italian. The kitchen is well equipped but does not have a working oven. There is another appliance which is like a grill/oven, but we managed to cook without it. It comes with a gas hob, a toaster and an espresso maker (of course!) There isn't a lot of preparation space but there is a large dining table you can use for that if necessary. The inside of the house can be rather cool, especially at night, so we were thankful to have an electric fireplace in the living room which heated the place up spectacularly (my partner even wants one!) The living room is a cute little area which has a large window behind the sofa which looks out onto the view (and also has a sliding door with a mesh screen for the hotter months). The bathroom is a good size, always had hot water and also has a hairdryer in the cabinet next to the shower, so you don't need to bring one with you! There are two good size bedrooms (double beds in both) and also a storage room. Overall the house is well maintained and it was clean. There is also a plug-in wifi and comes with gnat/mosquito repellent, and there's often basic necessities such as washing up liquid, shampoo/conditioner, body wash and suncream. GETTING THERE FROM CATANIA AIRPORT: Salvatore met us at the airport and he was very warm and friendly. He helped my partner with renting a car out (which is rather expensive by the way, but necessary to get to the house) and we followed Salvatore there. My partner is a confident driver but the markings on the road aren't very clear (and they don't always exist!), and we followed Salvatore through a town called Belpasso where the roads are narrow, the buildings are very closed-in and people park wherever they want/can. For my partner he found the drive to the house a bit stressful, but again, to get to the house, being able to drive is essential. To get back to the airport we ended up going a different route but this was just our personal preference. The road leading up to the house is essentially a path which is right by a sharp corner, but there is a mirror so you can see any oncoming traffic although the roads are not busy at all. The house is gated but it's a very tight squeeze to get in, although the house's driveway is generous in length and size. LOCATION: There are a few neighbouring houses but you are not overlooked. There are a couple of restaurants close by and also a supermarket called ARD Discount where you can get your essentials and neccessities. One thing that surprised us both about the area was the amount of stray dogs. My partner and I love animals and so the dogs did not bother us, but there are plenty around and they can often be heard barking. For me this is not an issue but my partner wished he had brought ear-plugs when it came to bedtime. There is also a farm nearby so you can hear the odd goat, cockrels and typical farm noises on occasion. There were some bangs which we heard too, we weren't sure if these were guns from the farm or fireworks. The point is, it is mostly very quiet and peaceful but not 100% all the time. There is also a stray grey cat which sometimes comes into the garden. She isn't a cat you can get near to and she does hiss if you approach her, but she got used to our company quite quickly and was happy to sit with us and was no bother at all. There are also a lot of small lizards (ghekkos) and my partner did also see a black snake which are native to Sicily. We drove to Taormina from the house, which took around an hour. Driving through towns is something my partner found a bit stressful but the motorway wasn't so bad. There are two tolls; one where you collect a ticket and the second one is where you pay (1 euro 70). Taormina is beautiful and I recommend the visit, especially the amphitheatre (Heidi Klum was doing a photoshoot the day we went!) THE HOST: Salvatore is lovely and always had a smile on his face. He does speak some English but has google translate handy for any difficult words or sentences! My Italian vocabulary is embarrassingly small, but he explained the ins and outs of the house to me in Italian which I managed to understand, although I'm sure he is able to explain everything in English too if you do not speak any Italian. He comes to clean the pool and water the garden every Thursday, and made sure to text me about his arrival hours in advance before coming over, so we knew when to expect him. He won't invade your privacy! Thank you for being a wonderful host :) Salvatore also has a dog (German Shepherd/Alsation) who lives outside in her own court yard. Please note though that she will not enter the property and she is mostly quiet. AREAS FOR IMPROVEMENT: 1. The beds are rather firm. And I mean firm, there is literally no bounce to them! My partner and I laid down an extra quilt on top of the mattress for some added comfort/softness. This might be okay for some people but for us we prefer something a bit softer! 2. The showerhead seems a little old and the water doesn't always come out in one direction - but this is a very minor issue! 3. The gate to the house could be made a bit bigger to make it easier for cars to manouvere into. 4. As all pools do, they can attract flies/bugs and leaves will fall into them. There is a net to get these out, but I wonder if maybe getting a pool cover when it's not being used could be useful, such as at night-time. All in all, my partner and I had a wonderful stay at Piccolo Paradiso and we are sure that all future holiday makers will enjoy their time there :)

Owner's reply: Thanks to Caroline for the nice review. The part of the passage between the houses of Belpasso made me laugh. It's really true, people leave the car parked in the street in a rather untidy way. Belpasso is the closest town to little paradise. It is a famous city because the first section is formed like a chessboard, the streets intersect every 50 meters: this is why it is called "the Etna checkerboard." Belpasso is also famous because it is the city of the 100 lava stone sculptures of the Etna, and also for its oil, pastry, ice-cream parlor etc. When I accompanied Caroline and James to my little paradise home, we crossed the city center to show where I live. Caroline and James are two wonderful guys and I'm sorry I did not know them better. Thanks again and I hope to see you again

“Great views, great location.”

Without repeating everything that has already been said, the Piccolo Paradiso is just as described. Wonderful location, great facilities and owned by the friendliest Sicilian I have ever met. As with the other reviewers, Salvatore met us at the airport, directed us to the villa (essential as there is a disagreement between the SatNav and reality), pointed out a (fantastic) place to eat as well as a local supermarket (just 3 minutes drive away). In addition, he provided great support throughout the stay. Always extremely respectful of privacy, he texts his plans to visit and than shouts on approach. One thing I didn't pick up from the previous reviews was the quality of the view from the property. You can literally see for miles and miles. Fantastic. Facilities are of a good standard with all the basics. No microwave but a very good hob and counter top oven (built in oven doesn't work). For balance to this review, I must mention the one thing that I saw as a controllable negative. The quality of the Wifi is not good. Most of the 10 days we stayed we had no connection at all. Any plans to run a media player or video device can be forgotten. There are plants of local areas that offer free Wifi (including the recommended restaurant) so keeping up to date with the latest cat pictures and friends emoji filled messages is still ok. Overall this is a fantastic property to stay in if you want a great location, great facilities, great views, a great host and a great vacation.

“Awesome romantic getaway for couples”

Reviewed 17 Oct 2014

We enjoyed our 2 week trip to this house a lot and absolutely recommend it to anyone who searches for the perfect relaxation spot while enjoying the life of sicily. The house is located 10 min drive north of Belpasso. Belpasso itself is a nice small town with lots of restaurants and most importantly with very few tourists. So you can really enjoy the authentic Sicily lifestyle. Close to the house is a supermarket and a few hundred metres up the road is a very good restaurant. You can hardly hear the road and the only thing you may hear at night are some dogs. So it is a really quiet location. Almost everything has been said about the house itself here. It is in a very good and perfectly clean condition. Inside and outside has been taken care of perfectly - including the pool and the garden. We used the kitchen quite a lot to cook. All the basics for good cooking are here. You may want to bring your favorite knifes from home if you are an ambitious cook. One of the best features of the house is its owner: Salvatore. He is the best host you can imagine. He took us from Belpasso to the house, where he already filled up the fridge because we arrived on a sunday. When our car got stuck on one of the roads in the middle of the night, he was there to help us and called his friends. Plus he is a really nice person who will make you feel comfortable right away. Bottom line: perfect getaway for any couple who wants to experience the real Sicily while enjoying the silence and romance of a house on the mount Etna.

“Magical paradise”

Reviewed 1 Sep 2014

Piccolo Paradiso is the perfect name for this magical house in the country. The house is owned by Salvatore who is a lovely, helpful man. He met us at the airport and showed us direct to his house where he had bought essential shopping to welcome us, which anywhere else you would have to pay extra for. The house is equipped with everything you will need for your holiday. It is located on the foothills of Mount Etna and offers superb views, both day and night and from the pool you can see Etna! The house is very comfortable, it has a kitchen, dining room and lounge with digital TV and satellite, 2 bedrooms with double beds, a spare room with wardrobes and a bathroom with shower and washing machine. The house has a lovely covered patio area with a table and chairs and also relaxing garden furniture. The pool is perfect with sun loungers and an out door shower, which is useful. One of its strongest points must be the privacy of this house and the peacefulness! The use of a car is essential as it is in the countryside and quite secluded. We had a lovely and very restful holiday there and would love to go again in the future. Grazie Salvatore

Lovely comfortable villa with good pool and lovely gardens,on the slopes of Mt Etna, Great views down to the sea. We were met by Salvatore the owner who was very friendly and helpful and went out of his way to assist us. Plenty of places to visit . Close to Belpasso town with shops and cafes and a car is necessary to go about to Catania and the beaches. Taomina and Syracuse are just over an hours drive away. Had a lovely and very restful holiday there and hope to go again in the future.
