The Coast Province region

Malindi town has been a tourist destination for 4 centuries and has an incredibly interesting history. A fairly untidy, chaotic place but real Africa mixed with Arab Swahili influences however very vibrant and full of colour, particularly the markets.

There are numerous things to do in and around Malindi and lots of sites on the internet about Malindi, Watamu, Gedi and Kipepeo, Kilifi, Lamu, Mombasa and the Tsavo National Park.

Casuarina

Diving and snorkelling the Malindi and Watamu Marine National Parks is highly recommended. The coral gardens are spectacular and there is always a chance of spotting turtles, dolphins, giant groupers or the harmless Whale Shark who are regularly sighted in the area.

Malindi is famous for big game fishing safaris (tag and release). Sailfish, marlin and swordfish are all plentiful.

Safaris into the East Tsavo National Park, 100kms to the west of Malindi can be arranged. The classic tented safari camps are situated along the Galana river.

The Gedi ruins, remnants of a 13th to 17th century Swahili town abandoned 3 centuries ago, is also well worth a visit.

The numerous restaurants in Malindi are excellent thanks to the resident Italian and German influences.
Local African style places are also very good. Nyama Choma (BBQ meat) and Swahili seafood curries in particular.

Shopping is excellent and very good value. Beautiful silver jewellery, fabrics, throws, kangas and Kikoi's, beaded leather sandals, bags and belts, soapstone carvings, locally made brass and glass light fittings. Classic Tinga Tinga artworks - stylised modern paintings in enamel, famous Makonde wood carvings, Arab and Swahili antiques.

“The most incredible stay on the coast..”

Reviewed 6 Jan 2016

We rented Neem House out over Xmas and NY with our family visiting from Malawi, England, Botswana, South Africa and Dubai (10 of us in total) The house is magnificent,; endless chill spots, a beautiful pool and a cool breeze from the ocean. All of the rooms are exquisite, especially the master bedroom, and the open roof top room with a view of the ocean just 300m away. The staff were absolutely fantastic, always cheerful and helpful sourcing us fresh seafood every day and cooking the most delicious dishes. Esther is a trained reflexologist/ massage therapist and her prices were very reasonable. The ten days went far too quickly - we had such an incredible time. Thank you Karin and fam for letting us stay in your incredible coastal home - we will be back! x

We stayed at Neem House for 10 days over Christmas and New Year 2015 and what a piece of paradise it was.The house itself has all the attributes required for a very comfortable stay with no hassels at all - right down to the bulk water tank cw high pressure pump whick clicks in when the Malindi Council water is not forthcoming. The Staff were excellent and all meals superbly sourced and prepared .

“INCREDIBLE Holiday Home”

Reviewed 4 Jan 2016

My family and I spent this past Christmas at Neem House - and had a completely incredible ten days! The house itself is exquisite - big beautiful rooms, lovely reading nooks and decor and an amazing plunge pool! The staff could not have been friendlier or kinder - they looked after us so well and treated us like Gold. Charo is a miracle worker in the kitchen and we all left a few kilo's heavier! Sammi is just the best, he was our go-to for everything during the holiday and we wouldn't have found our way around without him! Esther is the most magical masseus and we all had a number of relaxing massages and Purity was excellent too! We all came out from all over the world to spend christmas together and had the most magical time, so thank you to Karen as well! We will definitely be back soon! Your house is spectacular and comes HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!
