The 150 year old Pajara is a typical example of "vernacular architecture" developed by local farmers of the Salento region. At a time when every meter of land mattered, families expanded their farms by pulling stones out of the rocky ground until they created viable soil. They found a use for those stones, in building Pajaras for the purpose of having a refuge from the summer heat. Form followed function, as the builders conceived of a barrel vaulted ceiling to help hot air escape through the top, making the inside naturally cool and fresh. In 2007 the house was renovated for modern comforts, while maintaining the original design and rich historic elements. The pajara has two rooms and a large (60 square meters) shaded patio overlooking the vegetable and fruit garden, the olive trees and the sea. The main room has a double bed and a bathroom with a shower. The second room next to it has a fully equipped kitchen. The patio has a large wooden table with chairs, a cooking area with a stone sink and a fire place with barbecue, and two hammocks to enjoy and watch the stars at night.

Location description from owner

The Puglia region

Puglia has everything to offer in a sunny region with warm people, amazing landscapes and great food. The summer weather is always beautiful, warm and breezy.

The Salento region has Lecce as its artistic capital with its unique Baroque architecture. Around Lecce there are many cute, little towns surrounded by the rolling hills of the countryside with olive trees, stone walls and vineyards.

There is over 150km of coastline of long beautiful beaches and high cliffs dotted with sea caves.

Castro Marina

Marittima di Diso and Castro Marina are the towns closest to the property. Marittima is a lovely village of 3,000 people, 1 KM inland, immersed in nature. Castro Marina is a medeival village on the sea. It has a touristic harbour where you can rent a boat and go to see the worldwide famous Grotta Zinzulusa.

There are two beautiful squares on the sea with bars, restaurants, artisanal craft shops, and other amenities. Both towns have sport facilities. The sea is easily accessible and most of the people go to the beautiful Insenatura Acquaviva, one of the many local coves of the area.

“Still 'The Perfect Paradise'”

Reviewed 29 Aug 2016

This is our Fifth year staying in this delightful Pajara.....and we wouldn't think of going anywhere else! The accommodation is charming and comfortable, with many rustic features.....like the outdoor 'tree shower', the wood oven and the outdoor 'Butler' sink. The joy of the pajara is that it encourages outdoor living, whilst also benefitting from all necessary conveniences if preferred. The patio area is the 'piece de resistance' with its large refectory table, loungers and hammock which make for long, lingering lunches and sleepy afternoons. The Arseni Family could not have been more hospitable .....allowing us to enjoy the fruit and vegetables from their estate, and sharing lots of insights/information about the local area. Nothing is too much trouble and they respond immediately to any minor 'concerns' The Pajara is perfectly located to explore the wonders of Salento....the nearest beach Aquaviva is beautiful, but there are also many other lovely beaches nearby. The city of Lecce is not to be missed but there are so many other places of interest in the area that you don't need to travel very far to enjoy the unique charm of local Salento culture and people.

“A fantastic experience in a wonderful setting!”

From the exceptional communication prior to the holiday; to the wonderfully warm welcome in beautiful Puglia, the Arseni family could not have done more for us. The property was truly amazing; the buildings themselves and the bountiful vegetable and fruit garden which we really made great use of! The olive wood BBQ on the patio made great fun of cooking the local freshly caught seafood and meat from the local butchers. The local beach Aquaviva was stunning and a refreshing place to swim in the gorgeous Adriatic Sea. We had a fabulous holiday and fell in love with Puglia!
