The Puglia region

The Salento, a true wonder of the Italian peninsula, narrow and long reclining between the Adriatic Sea and the Ionian Sea, is characterized by coast that are highly suggestive and charming, which feature a variety of situations so different as to constitute a constant surprise.

The sea is a spell of intense light with its thousand shades from cobalt blue to turquoise crystal clear waters of a unique transparency.

You can change route every day (a good road network allows you to make long distance in a short time choosing routes and detours that lead into the sea and vice versa or village from the Ionian Sea to the Adriatic) as there are numerous and extensive beaches with white sand ideal for families with children (Torre dell'Orso in Otranto, Porto Cesareo, Gallipoli, Ugento etc..) and many other places with spectacular cliffs overlooking the sea full of fish, for the more experienced swimmers and divers fans interrupted by coves accessible only by sea, bays, tunnels, and caves (Castro, Santa Cesarea, Miggiano Porto, Porto Badisco, Porto Selvaggio, St. Catherine, Torre San Giovanni, Santa Maria di Leuca, etc..).

On the coast, you can meet old watchtowers to defend the Turks and inlets refuge of the fishing boats.

The fish is freshly caught, something suggestive: the mullet of Porto Cesareo, lobsters of Leuca, squid, mullet, bream, octopus and the fish market in Gallipoli with its "auctions" scenarios choreographic intent to untangle fishing nets after a night at sea.

The taste and the smell of freshly caught sea urchins or custom tasted with lemon and eaten with bread typical, it is definitely a must see for tourists to Castro, Porto Badisco and other seaside resorts.

Castro is a town of 2,487 inhabitants in the province of Lecce.

Located along the east coast of the Salento peninsula, the town is the main format from the town of medieval origin, situated on a promontory at 98 m above sea level, and the lower part of Castro Marina, built around the harbor. A fishing village and seaside resort, has ancient origins as the heir of the Roman Castrum Minervae. It was one of the first cities in the Salento to be elevated to the rank of county and was also a bishopric until 1818.

The name comes from the greek ??????? (fortified, fortress). During the Roman age it was latinized in Castrum and in the settlement took the name of Castrum Minervae for the presence of a temple dedicated to Minerva.

The poet Virgil, Aeneid, placed the first landing of Aeneas in Italy Minervae Castrum (opposite Butroto, Epirus), its port was dominated by a high promontory at the top of which stood the majestic temple dedicated to Minerva. The excavations of 2007, which affected the Acropolis of Castro, have revealed traces of a sanctuary probably dedicated to Minerva, Athena of the Greeks. This finding confirms the center of Salento like the mythical Castrum Minervae, landing of Aeneas.
