Very Good

“Absolutely charming!”

Reviewed 31 Dec 2012

A cottage right out of the movie The Holiday, staying here made my first trip to Ireland just right. Nicely appointed, stunning ocean view from the private garden, and smartly decorated for Christmas (I stayed here the week beforehand), it was quaint and homey with still all the necessary amenities. The landlords are very kind and helpful and are very friendly, always up for sharing some coffee, but will leave you in peace if you so choose. It is in a good location, a few minutes from the adorable seaside town of Castletownbere, and not too long of a drive from the Ring of Kerry, Killarney or Dingle. About 4 1/2 hours straight from Dublin, or 6, if you take the scenic route, it is good to plan a day to get there if flying into the city. Other sites like the Cliffs of Moher, might be out of range for a day trip if you are an unexperienced driver in Ireland (unprecedented narrow and blotchy strips of pavement they call roads with speed limits of up to 100 km/hr while driving on the left side). Getting there is a bit tricky with directions mainly out of pictures and in the dark it is easy to miss (as is anything in the small towns on the peninsula) But, you can call for help getting there and they are very willing to give directions over the phone for the last little bit. Overall, if you are looking for the true concept of a holiday - a peaceful getaway in a storybook style cottage nestled in the green hills of the Kerry/Cork region, this is a perfect choice. And you won't find a better or even a comparable cottage for the same price here - I was given a great rate that as a student with a part-time job could easily pay. Plus, the landlords throw in homemade bread (to die for), marmelade, the typical (and best) Irish butter, and milk. For one of my dinners, I paired this with some local cheese bought from a farm on Healy Pass on the way to Kenmare. The whole thing cost me 2 euro and was delicious! This was my first time traveling alone and my first time to Ireland and my holiday here was just lovely. Definitely would recommend this!!!
