The Abruzzo region

The region of Abruzzo above all offers diversity –you will find nature, mountains, beach, gastronomy, art, architecture, local crafts, museums, folklore, sport –something for everyone in fact. The Gran Sasso National Park is less than an hours drive away passing through the beautiful town of Farindola well known for Pecorino cheese production.Truffles, maccheroni alla chitarra and the local wine Montepulciano D'Abruzzo are also well worth sampling.

The climate tends to favour mild springs and autumns with hot summers. Winters can be cold and sometimes snowy particularly inland but equally it can be mild with chilly nights.

The area of Abruzzo has a wealth of monuments and archeological points of interest. The region was inhabited by the Vestini.

The house is well situated to access the local national parks and nature reserves as well as the breath taking natural features such as the valley of the hundred waterfalls(Valle delle Centro Cascate, termal springs at Caramanico Terme and Campo Imperatore which is described as the Tibet of Italy. Why not try the local favourite of Arrosticini-skewered lamb kebabs cooked on coals outside the butchers shop high on the mountain plain.

Abruzzo holds some of Italy's best-preserved Medieval and Renaissance hill towns-locally you will find the towns of Penne,Castiglione and Montefino as well as the town of Loreto Aprutino.Further afield are the beautifully preserved villages of Castel del Monte (AQ) and Santo Stefano di Sessanio, which lie in the Gran Sasso National Park on the edge of the high plain of Campo Imperatore and nestled beneath the Apennines' highest peaks; both hill towns, which were ruled by the Medicis for over a century-and-a-half.

Campo Imperatore is home to one of Italy's oldest ski resorts, which began commercial operation in the 1920s and continues to thrive as a ski resort to this day due to its proximity to Rome (132 km or an hour-and-a-half by car). The resort became dictator Benito Mussolini's prison in August 1943 with his fall from power until he was freed by German commandos in September 1943.

There is also Rocca di Calascio, the ruin of an ancient fortress popular with film makers. Within the Gran Sasso National Park is Castelli, an ancient pottery centre whose artisans produced ceramics for most of the royal houses of Europe. Although still home to many artisans, Castelli now promotes itself through the tourist trade.

Abruzzo is also good for mountain biking and we can recommend an English speaking guide that will hire bikes if required and also act as a guide.

Castiglione Messer Raimondo

Within the locality you will find it easy to fill your days visiting the local towns, villages and markets stopping off for coffee in the many cafes and bars that are so much part of life in Italy. There are many hilltop towns and villages in the local area Castiglione Messer Raimondo, Penne, Montefino Bisenti-the list is endless.

Throughout the summer months there are festivals and Sagra in all the small towns and villages locally. Penne which is a 15 minute drive away has non stop evening attractions throughout August including a Medieval Sagra, "White Night ",an all night festival and "Sheep Night ", a food festival -these are well worth a visit to get a flavour of the real Abruzzi lifestyle. There are numerous museums and archeological sites too.In Penne guided walking tours of the town and natural beauty spots can be organised and booked, visiting places in the mountans and hills in Abruzzo.

If its the beach you like then again a 30-40 km drive will get you to Pineto, Montesilvano, and Silvi beaches. Further down the coast beyond Ortona are the Trabocchi -amazing fishing platforms contructed from wood washed up by the tide.

You can reach the Gran Sasso & Maiella National Parks in just 40 minutes. The National Parks cover one-third of the territory of Abruzzo, so there is an abundance of walks and trails of various lengths and levels of difficulty.

Walks include:

1. Castelli and its surroundings - pottery and high mountains.

2. Calderone glacier (the southernmost glacier in Europe).

3. Along the sheep-track from S.Demetrio ne'Vestini to Peltuinum and Bominaco.

4. Monastries of S. Bartolomeo and S. Spirito

5. From Fara S. Martino to the Vallone di S. Spirito, visiting the most spectacular gorge in the Maiella mountains.

6. The Rosello fir-wood.

7. The rocky coast of Punta d'Erce.

8. On the banks of lake Campotosta.

9. Cesacastina to the Hundred Waterfalls.

or you can just enjoy walking along the by-roads and tracks around Villa Collecimino itself.

Skiing/mountain sports:

Winter sports available between November and April. Campo Imperatore in the Gran Sasso mountains has 4 ski lifts and 8 ski runs.

Also close by is the Monte Cristo facility with 4 ski lifts and 10 ski runs. Other winter sports such as bobsleigh, sledging, cross-country skiing, or mountain climbing are also available.
