Location description from owner

The Tuscany region

The Tuscan Region of Italy is well known for its warm balmy summers, beautiful countryside, rolling hills, mouth - watering food, and of course its towns and villages, rich with medieval architecture…The Garfagnana region of Tuscany, often known as its ‘Green Lung’ is situated away from the milling crowds that can often be found at the most famous Tuscan locations and is totally unspoilt, remaining untouched by tourism. The scenery is spectacular, green and mountainous with views of both the Apuane and Appenine mountains at every turn…And, due to the altitude whilst the weather can be very hot, it is always pleasantly cool for sleeping…The food is usually home made, using home grown produce, and is typically simple and extremely tasty. Prices here remain very reasonable due to the fact that food is prepared with the locals, and not tourists in mind…The local wine is cheap and surprisingly drinkable! The pace of life is slow and peaceful – spend your days enjoying secluded picnics, swimming in rivers, or watching locals play bocce or ‘cheese throwing’. Visit hundreds of ancient hill top villages, or relax at home basking in stunning scenery. For ‘townie’ days, visit the mediaeval towns of Barga, Lucca, Castelnuovo, with Pisa and Florence within easy reach too…This is Olde Worlde Italy.

Castelnuovo di Garfagnana

The farmhouse is situated in the heart of the Garfagnana, with stunning 360 views of the Appenines, Apuane Alps and the famous 'Uomo Morto'. Whilst ideal for a peaceful, rural away from it all holiday, this property offers the convenience of town too, with the famous market town of Castelnuovo less than a 5 minute drive away. Indeed the beautiful fortress, with commanding views over the valley and the mountains beyond, and noted for its classical music events, is 10 minutes on foot & here one will find a good quality restaurant serving excellent local food.. The town itself has a famous weekly market, bars, restaurants, shops, and train station for easy exploring. Drive times are: Castelnuovo 3 mins or so Mediaeval town of Barga - 15 minutes Lucca - 45 minutes Pisa - 1 hour 15 minutes Florence - 90 minutes National Park of Orrechiella - 30 mins Walking, horseriding, and picnic opportunities straight from the door!

“A wonderful week in a rural idyll”

Reviewed 13 Sep 2015

We just wanted to write to say just how much we enjoyed our week at Orbaci and how much we enjoyed exploring the beautiful Garfagnana region . It is a lovely relaxing property set in an idyllic location with stunning scenery right on the doorstep. For our money the Garfagnana has just as much to offer as the rest of Tuscany but with the huge added advantage of being free of most of the tourist hordes. The day we went to Lucca was the only time we really felt we had strayed back into the main flow of summer tourists Mel and Alan made us very welcome and were very helpful . The highpoint for us was the absolutely wonderful meal Mel cooked for us to celebrate our daughter’s twenty-first birthday whilst we were staying at Orbaci . The food was really delicious and Alan made an excellent head waiter! It made Sophie’s birthday into a very special memory . The arrangements with the wheel chair worked really well and meant the Carolyn’s mother had the best holiday she has had for years as we were able to get her out and about a lot more. The heat was amazing and meant that swimming in the pool was a great relief . It also means that we will have to come back at another time of year when it is cool enough to go walking . In particular , we had an excellent late afternoon wander at San Pellegrino but we only managed to scratch the surface so we are going to have to come back when we will be free to wander to our hearts content.

Thank you for your detailed review and we are really glad you had such a good time both at the villa for your celebrations and locally in this stunning area. Alan and Mel would love to welcome you back!

“Fantastic place, lovely owners”

Reviewed 12 Aug 2012

We stayed three weeks at Orbaci together with friends and family and had a wonderful time! The place is clean and very well kept. The estate feels spacious and is lovely situated in the Tuscan hillside, very private. The owners are very kind and helpful, and not at all intruding. Nearest village (5 min by car, 10 min walk on a small path) is the charming Castelnuovo di Garfagnana. We had all we needed – and then some. We will look back on this holiday with warmth and thankfulness – and hope to come back one day! We will recommend this place to anyone who is looking for a calm holiday with good food (nice outdoor eating area), swimming in the pool, hikes in the mountains a short drive away, visits to the local market or visits to Tuscan villages and cities.

“A Family Celebration at Orbaci”

Reviewed 20 Sep 2011

Orbaci was the perfect villa for a relaxing celebration for our large family. The villa itself is fitted out to a very high standard and very well equiped. It's situation is beautiful, with stunning views over to the distant mountain range. The swimming pool is idyllic. Alan and Mel, the owners who don't live on site, are very nice. Never obtrusive, but willing to help if required. Mel made a meal (at a reasonable extra cost) for our arrival, which was extremely tasty. All in all, the holiday was worth every penny.

“Fantastic villa in beautiful position”

Reviewed 16 Aug 2011

We had a party of 9 staying 2 weeks in this wonderfully converted and updated villa. It was spacious and very comfortable. Everything you would have wanted was available in the villa. The surroundings are simply stunning. Forested mountain sides, quietness it was a joy getting up every morning. It is locatecd only 5 mins drive from the area's main town so convenient for provisions etc. it is also accessible to the coast (1hr), Lucca (1hr), Pisa (1.5 hrs) and Florence (2hrs) so good days out are also practical as well. The owners Mel and Alan and very knowledgeable and given provided presents of home grown vegetables and honey! Thoroughly enjoyable stay.
