The Dordogne region

The Dordogne is one of the most beautiful regions of France with its mix of pretty riverside villages, wooded valleys and castles dating back to medieval times. There are also many caves some with prehistoric paintings.

The Perigord Noir, as it is called in France, is easily accessible from the UK by either air or car. It is famous for its cuisine with local specilaities including duck, walnuts and truffles and no meal is complete without some of the excellent local wine.

The weather is warmer than the UK. Spring starts early with lots of blue sunny skies in the summer and the autumn stretches well into October.

Castelnaud is in an area of exceptional beauty with pretty medieval villages and castles to explore and was on the front line during the 100 years war between the English and the French. Nearby Sarlat,La Roque Gageac, Beynac and Domme are outstanding examples of villages with beautiful medieval architecture and all within just a few kms. Other attractions include the colourful markets selling local produce, formal gardens and the many prehistoric sites including the famous Lascaux caves with their wall paintings.

Our favourites are:-

-the garden at Marqueyssac with its unique style of topiary and marvellous views over the Dordogne valley and across to Castelnaud - we like to walk there from Le Rouquet to give the car a rest;

-the walled village of Domme with its fortified gateways into the town and the views over the river and the countryside below;

-the Saturday market at Sarlat with its hustle and bustle and local gourmet specialities (the architecture of the old town is exceptional with many alleyways and cafes in secluded spots);

-the bastide towns, including Monpazier (great market) and Villereal (there is an interesting self guided tour of the historic village);

-to stroll along the waterfront of La Roque Gageac and go to the troglodytic caves followed by a lazy meal looking over at the river; and finally

-no visit is complete without a canoe trip down the river which can be arranged from Castelnaud (you can choose how far you want to be taken upriver and then it is an easy paddle with the river doing most of the work and the chance to take a break at one of the riverside rest stops for refreshment and a swim).

There are also many well marked walks through the wooded countryside around Castelnaud for the more energetic (maps are provided in the apartment). On a hot day why not walk down to the river and enjoy a picnic on the grassy bank in the shade of the trees and cool off with a swim.

"A truly magical experience - perfect for us all"

We had an absolutely fantastic week....we enjoyed everything about it, pate, wine, cafes, bread, canoeing, walking, swimming in the was fabulous. The area and surroundings is breath taking. I did wonder how our 10 year old would cope without the normal swimming pool, holiday complex set up but she didn't miss it at all. We all got so much from the holiday, the mix of art, culture, history and activity was perfect...I was very sad to leave and I am sure we will want to go again at some point. The apartment was perfect, really comfortable and very well equipped, the views lovely. As we are so lucky to live in a particularly picturesque part of the UK surrounded by surf and moors and rivers, we sometimes don't really match what we have at home when we go away but this gave us something different, exceeded all expectations and many memories that we will all cherish.

""Fantastic garden apartment in medieval Dordogne village""

We spent two weeks in this beautiful garden apartment in the village of Castelnaud-la-Chapelle in Dordogne. It was the holiday of a lifetime, living among ancient cottages built into the hillside below a 13th century castle and above the magnificent Dordogne River. The apartment was exactly as it appeared in photos on the website, if not better. It was well equipped, and with family photos, local photography and artwork it felt "homey" and well cared for. We were given good instructions to find our way there and plenty of local information about things to do in the area, including maps for lots of walks through the countryside. We enjoyed lying on the sun beds in the warm evenings while hot air balloons floated overhead. We didn't miss TV and made use of the small library of books on the apartment. There was free wifi at the cafe-bar down by the river. Access to the castle or to the river was up or down steep, sometimes cobbled paths, good for us to keep fit after our daily visit to the boulangerie! If we didn't live on Australia we would be returning regularly as it was such a great experience.

"Lovely apartment set in a stunning location"

We stayed in this lovely apartment for a week and had a wonderful time. The apartment is by far the best equipped that we have ever stayed in and was spotlessly clean on arrival. It is ideally situated for visiting many of the attractions in the Dordogne or, should you prefer, just relaxing on the terrace and soaking up the sun, watching the swallows performing, and the occasional hot air balloon drifting past. I would thoroughly recommend this property to anyone with full mobility - the climb from the church to the apartment could prove too much for some.

"Stunning views. Lovely cottage. Highly recommended."

My wife and I stayed in Le rouquet for a week at the end of October. I simply cannot say enough good things about our stay. A beautiful cottage carefully renovated in an idyllic location in the shadows of a chateau. What more could you wish for. Plenty to see and do in the area both for adults and children. Some places were closed as it was the end of the season but still more than enough to fill every day. Paul and Judy were very friendly and provided us with a comprehensive visitors pack to help us find the property and local amenities. Would I recommend to my friends? Definitely, in fact since I've been back I have talked about nothing else.

So pleased that you enjoyed your stay at Le Rouquet and all that the area has to offer. Hopefully you will be able to visit us again in the future.

"Beautiful situation, excellent gite"

The gite was tastefully furnished and well maintained. The situation in the medieval village was beautiful with many interesting places to visit in the surrounding countryside within a short drive.

We are so glad that you were pleased with the accomodation and found so much to do in this most scenic part of the Dordogne. Thank you for staying.
