Description

It is a clean, bright, friendly house, with some interesting features, and a lot of style. And, as of 2014, Wi-Fi broadband internet, for those who need to keep in touch while getting away from it all. Enjoy the clear light and breath the clean air of this unspoilt corner of France, while being a short drive away from Perpignan, one its most colourful and fashionable cities. Le Juchoir's open plan living area, including kitchen and terrace, is upstairs, and the bedroom and bathroom are on the ground floor. The house is quite small, but clever design ensures that it feels light, spacious and airy. We've provided lots of storage space for everything you might bring with you, including your clothes.

The solid oak front door opens onto a hall with an open spiral staircase up to the living room.

Off the hall:

The good size bedroom has a brand new Japanese-style king-size (160 x 200 cm) bed. We wanted to be sure you slept well on holiday, so the bed has a top

We wanted to be sure you slept well on holiday, so the bed has a top quality medium firm latex mattress; four pillows of two different thicknesses, so you can pick and choose what suits you; a medium weight duvet, and a pure cotton candlewick bedspread. There's plenty of hanging space (and plenty of hangers!), and drawer space for clothes. A full-size automatic washing machine is concealed in a cupboard, with an iron and ironing board.

The bathroom has the usual wc and basin, a decent size tiled shower area, and a nice big heated towel rail.

The staircase takes you up to:

A lovely bright living room. At the front are beautiful wall-to-wall, floor-to-ceiling, oak framed windows, that open onto a terrace, from where you have a view of the hills over the rooftops of the village. Light floods through these south-east facing windows, making the living area bright and sunny, even in winter. At the far end is:

A well-equipped kitchen area, with electric cooker, microwave, fridge with freezer compartment, and a full complement of pots, pans, and cooking equipment.

Between the kitchen and the terrace is a dining area, with a table and four chairs, and a lounge area, with a sofa bed, armchair, television and dvd player. There's always a selection of dvds, books, and games in the house, and a radio / cd player with an input socket to connect an MP3 player.

The sofa bed converts to a double bed (140 x 190 cm – this is the 'spare bed' shown in the facilities summary below), that would comfortably sleep two children, and we have provided the same pillows and duvet for the sofa bed as for the main bed. We feel it would however be stretching the capacity of the accommodation to say it would sleep four adults, which is why we show the property as sleeping three.

One side wall and the rear wall of the living area have been left unplastered, to show off the beautiful original honey-coloured sandstone. The floors throughout, including the terrace, are cream-coloured ceramic tiles. There are electric radiators in the bedroom, living area (x2), and hall. They are more than capable of maintaining a comfortable temperature, even with the 30 cm of snow we had at the beginning of March!

The terrace is the perfect place to enjoy an evening aperitif, or a barbecue, using the simple charcoal grill supplied.

Further details

The difference between our low and high season prices may seem small compared to some other properties. This is simply because our prices include water and electricity consumption, regardless of season, while many properties charge extra for electricity for winter rentals. We think this makes things more complicated for you, and gives a misleading impression of the rental cost during colder months. Our prices also include bed linen, towels, and cleaning after you leave.

The changeover day is flexible, to allow guests not tied to weekend-to-weekend holidays the option of mid-week travel. If your planned dates leave a gap of a few days after the end of a previous booking or before the start of the next one, we may offer a special rate for you to extend your visit to fill the gap.

The standard rental period is from 1700 (5 pm) on the arrival date, to 1000 (10 am) on the departure date. If you would like to arrive or leave before or after these times, please ask: it may be possible if there are not back-to-back bookings.

Further details outdoors

Le Juchoir is in a very quiet street on the edge of the hill village of Cassagnes. You can drive right up to the front door to unload, and there is virtually no passing traffic. There is a small parking place just 30 metres away.

The Occitanie region

The area offers excellent walking and bird watching right on the doorstep. And the Agly is a favourite destination for rafting and canyoning. Cassagnes is just a half-hour drive from Queribus, the last Cathar stronghold, and one of the most atmospheric. Closer still are the pretty fortified villages of Latour-de-France and Bélesta, previously frontier towns between France and Spain.

To the east, Cassagnes is just 45 km from miles and miles of sandy Mediterranean beaches, and even closer to one of France's prettiest and liveliest cities, Perpignan. During the summer months Perpignan hosts all sorts of attractions, from jazz and music festivals to street fairs and art exhibitions. With its strong Spanish and North African influences, it offers many restaurants, cafes, and bars, as well as some of the most interesting shops you're likely to find anywhere.

Cassagnes

The village has a perfect little shop where you can buy all the essentials – milk, fruit, vegetables, cheese, salami, etc – and fresh hand-baked bread and croissants from the bakery next door. (The baker is the shopkeeper's husband.) There's also a really sweet little restaurant, Auberge des Capitelles, a bar, and a post office. All these are within two minutes walk of the house. A butcher's van, and a clothes stall, also visit once a week.

Perpignan airport is very close: just 30 km. Close enough to take a taxi if you don't want to hire a car.
From the airport you take the D117 towards Axat. At Estagel turn off for Latour-de-France, then follow the signs for Cassagnes.

Cassagnes, on a hill overlooking the Agly River, is surrounded by stunning and dramatic scenery, close to the area known as the Fenouillèdes. Set between the Pyrenees and the Mediterranean, the rocky landscape is covered with a mat of low lying shrubs – 'garrigue'. Aromatic shrubs such as lavender, rosemary and wild thyme flourish along with juniper and holm oaks, interspersed with Côtes du Roussillon vineyards clinging to the rocky slopes.

The next section is Guest Reviews. Please note that we have several reviews, all of them glowing, registered on another website. We are not prepared to ask our guests to write a review on two or more different sites – this strikes us as too much of an imposition. If you would like to read these reviews, do please get in touch via the "Contact the owner" section, and we'd be happy to include them in our reply.
